Police use iPhone app that can identify a suspect by taking a photo of their face

Police in the US are using an iPhone app to take photos of suspects and instantly compares them with a criminal database.

The app employs biometric information such as facial recognition software to help police identify suspects within seconds.

Known as MORIS (Mobile Offender Recognition and Identification System), the system lets police officers take a photo of a suspect, upload it into a secure network where it is then analysed.

The system itself has been around for a number of years but this is the first time the iPhone’s unique combination of easy interface and high-end capability have been used by the police in this way.

If a biometric match is made, the identity, photo and background information about the suspect is transmitted back to the police officer's iPhone and displayed.

The app will be used by the gang unit at Brockton police in Massachusetts at first although if it is a success it will be taken on by other parts of the force.

It will eventually be used by 28 police departments and 14 sheriff departments in the state.

‘This is something the officers can access when they are out on the road,’ Police Chief William Conlon said.
Brockton is the first police force in the US to use the device – other departments are expected to receive them shortly.

The iPhone being used in Brockton equipped with the facial recognition application but iris and fingerprint identification applications are expected to be added in time.

One more reason I don't spend $500/year on my own slavery.

Well, that and the fact that you don't make $500/year.

DREAMTROVE

The cop is using the cops iPhone, not the suspects. Sure. While that is theoretically possible, it's unnecessary. You can take pictures of humans with any one of the billion camera planted around the planet. It's unlikely that a camera on a suspects phone will be in position to take a picture of his face at any given time, in fact it's very likely that you will get the inside of his pocket. Sure, any GPS will tell you where a suspect is, or at least his phone, I suspect this system will be more useful to us than it will to them, because they have no idea who the suspect is.

Think about it. We know exactly who they are, and they have no died who we are. There are probably around 5000 or so folks running what we call TPTB, and we can identify a fair number of them, they have seven billion of us to deal with, probably 500 million or so who know what they are up to. Of course, much more than knowing where they are, we will know where we are, and you ought to be able to see the strategic value of that.

DT: Not to side with PN or anything, but the new iPhone 4 has a camera that faces you when you hold the phone in front of your face to read the menu. It's got two cameras, so you can video-chat with someone.

And with the accelerometers that know the camera's position and attitude, it wouldn't be inconceivable that it could be used to take pictures of you remotely. Your phone might be watching you watching it. :)

That really doesn't bother me overly much, though. I figure anyone hacking into someone's iPhone camera is likely to be treated to some unwelcome "chat roulette" footage more often than they'd like! ;)
