It's almost as tho' they're like the Damns, snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory, as it were. They seemed to be on the cusp of gaining so many seats, yet some of the people they're putting up just make one laugh.

Take Pamela Gorman from Arizona. I won’t put up the only video I can find of her ad, because it’s Keith Olbermann (it’s been removed from YouTube and linked to a site my Norton says is dangerous), but it’s pretty amazing. It shows nothing of her but her shooting guns...four different ones, including a semi-automatic, and the voiceover talks about how she’s voted “100% by the NRA”, “a Conservative Christian who’s a pretty fair shot”, “she’s right on target”, “she can take care of herself”, “the caliber of our candidates”. It’s funny as hell, but what does any of that have to do with her qualifications for office? Or is it just that being good with a gun is enough for Arizonans these days to put you in Congress???

We all remember The Chicken Lady out here in Nevada, who’s comments sunk her campaign and let Sharon Angle win the primary. They were absolutely DROOLING to take down Harry Reid; now Reid is drooling about Angle and the GOP is distancing themselves.

Angle turns out to be even MORE the gift that gives on giving than Lowden. We already know her stances on a few things (like doing away with the EPA and Dept. of Education; the massage program for prisoners she backed from Scientology). But it gets even better. She doesn’t believe there are ever ANY circumstances where abortion should be allowed, not rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. Her reasoning? “Got has a plan”. So it’s God’s plan if you get raped, and God’s plan if mother and daughter both die, when one could be saved.

She is also in favor of that recent killing of the extension of unemployment benefits, saying we’ve got so many entitlements that we’ve “spoiled our citizenry” so much that they say they “don’t want the jobs that are out there”. ...lazy slobs should go out there and get one of those jobs that isn’t there these days, yes sirree!

Since her first interview and stuff came out about her, she’s been hiding from ANY interviews other than by conservative shows. I guess she “got it”, just as Rand Paul did—remember HIM and how he ran for cover after reporters challenged him? It began with an interview with the editorial board of the Louisville Courier Journal, and ended with his dodging questions on the Rachel Maddow show (the very show where he announced his candidacy):

A pundit in the Countdown clip says he thinks these candidates have been talking for so long with their Tea Party groups that it’s made them feel safe because they haven’t had to talk to the country at large or answer hard questions. I think he’s right. What comes of novices trying to enter the difficult political arena, maybe?

Just truly astonishing! Whether red or blue, I want THINKING, intelligent people in the Congress, not nutwings who want to put on shows rather than give any reasons they would be good legislators.

Like I say, with candidates like these, it seems like the Repubs are setting themselves UP for snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory! I almost feel sorry for the GOP. Almost.

You know what I love? John McCain’s MOTHER about Limbaugh! She’s fantastic, and sounds much more reasonable than any of those Tea Party candidates who keep talking insanity and tripping over their own words. Hell, why not just go back to blaming Clinton and Carter for everything like you always do? You never did explain how Chris Dodd and Barney Frank managed to write and pass the laws while the Republicans were in the majority, held both houses of Congress AND the White House, and held all the chairmanship positions in every committee in Congress.

Bush's tax cuts for the ultra-rich cost the country over a trillion dollars, every penny of which went straight onto the national debt; the Medicare Part D debacle of his added another several trillion to the debt as well.

By your own words, Obama and the Dems are now REALLY saving the country!

As for the blame game, it's wrong for everyone. You know my limit, is as it has been, eighteen months. After twelve, everyone has to take ownership of their own problems. Real peace candidates can end the wars they inherit in a lot less than a year. In eighteen months you can even turn a bad economy around.


Anyway, I see nothing wrong with this picture, other than that our entire system of govt has fallen apart. Sometimes I think Jan brewer has the right idea. I disagree with the issue, but throwing grenades into the system and split off your own private fiefdom might be the best way to go now.

DT: Yes. Obama's had enough time now that if he WANTED out of Iraq and AfPakistanistan, we'd be at the very least on our WAY out of those hellholes. He doesn't; we aren't. In fact, according to the NYT, we're actually paying the people we're fighting, apparently so we can continue fighting them, forever. Yes, that pretty much nails it.though I might say that were paying people who ARE fighting us, not paying them TO fight us. The latter while possible, isn't necessary. It may be just a case of us not being able to tell who is on our side, and the people we hired yesterday changing their mind about being on our side. In such a situation we could stop arming people, but if we do that, then they can't fight for our cause and we'd much rather have afghans dying for our cause than Americans, cause Americans dying is not popular.

It would seem that the global nwo is he'll bent on defeating Islam because it doesn't own it, the Israelis don't like it and so all the moneyed elite and religious nut jobs can whine, and that given that, their task is infinite, and given an infinite task, there would be no need to intentionally prolong the war in pen part of the muslim world just to make war, since there are a billion Muslims out there.

Another possibility is thAt the power that be are not so powerful after all, and their ability to conquer and capture land is pretty limited. Right now the plan seems to be to take the next year to conquer Kandahar, and I have just this sneaking suspicion that were going to lose anyway. Thatbeing the case, we might as well skip the battle for Kandahar, come home, and devote some of those resources here, to our many growing problems.



To the original thread topic, I actually like the new brand of tea party republican better than the outgoing neocon elite. They're like a corrupt version of libertarian, and if it weren't corrupt, it would never get elected, so I can accept some corruption. The thing I don't want to see is more support for environment destruction.

I think these people are figuring out who their target audience is, and it's not you. If they can motivate a small core of active voters, they have a chance to win. They can discount the Democratic vote right out of the starting gate, and the moderates often don't get excited enough to vote for non-presidential elections.

And so that leaves them to stir up thin slices of the American pie for maximum interest and impact. Simple messages, too. "I will protect your gun rights" or "I will lower taxes."

I do wish I owned a Thompson like the one pictured in the Gorman ad, though. Bloody expensive, especially the full-auto versions. About $175 when they first came out, now priced at $2,000. That's inflation, I guess.

Bush's tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy reduced Federal revenues (please don't make me post the table of Federal revenues from 1950 to 2008 again) at exactly the same time he increased spending (can you say Iraq War and Medicare Part D? SURE YA CAN!)

And the resulting huge inequity in wealth set the stage for irresponsible lending/ borrowing, and the Big Crash... as it has done since the 1700's. So the house of cards started toppling in August, under BUSH'S watch and because of BUSH'S policies. Yep, it took four years of careful and persistent work, but "trickle down" finally took full effect.

One day soon, rappy, i hope you will see that most of that you believe was mistaken. Sincere, and heartfelt, but still a big, terrible mistake.

"Properly aimed" bullets STARTED World War I. And "properly aimed" bombs by the Japanese started our full-scale entry into WWII. They didn't "determine the course of the war", though. Generally speaking, those "properly aimed" projectiles seem to have had a devastating effect on the LOSING side of the war.

Based on the current approval rating of the prez and congress, I think predictions aren't wrong there's going to be a swingback that Republicans will get back in office. Two party system and all.

I have no problem with crazy, but these guys aren't actually crazy. They're fed a party line and told to toe it, but my impression is they don't actually understand their own platforms or the platforms of their party.

So they're trying to make stuff up they think fits the agenda, but it comes out mostly nonsense. It could be that they're not being as carefully managed as they have in the past, which COULD be a good thing, but I don't want to stake an election of the future or the country on hope without evidence. If any of it's an act, and they're really neo-cons in disguise, we've screwed ourselves again.

I'd like to end the parties, I think that's our best chance right now, because I doubt we'll be able to fix anything with either of these two in office. Vote Independent! Let's be browncoats. :)

Mal, with enough money, someone COULD. Question is, for Fox, what constitutes "enough"? And how much control would they relinquish? Say I offered them $50 million for the rights to relight the Firefly - they say, "Sure, but we hold onto the syndication rights!" Damn, that sucks. Syndication is where the real money is, if a show can make it that long to get into syndication. But I'm desperate, so I agree. "Okay, you've got it," says FoxExec #1, "Oh... and we're going to be holding onto the licensing and product rights, too." Fuck. There go the Firefly toys and action figures, the Firefly sheets and Xmas ornaments, etc. "Well," says I, "if you must. I just want the show back on the air." That's why we're keeping the digital rights - DVD, Blu-Ray, iTunes, any kind of digital copies of the show that can be sold, we own all those." Seriously, at some level, corporate execs have to have the ability to look as SOME money in one hand, versus NO money in the other hand, and gladly pick the hand with NO money in it. They'd rather have nothing than have you pay them less than they want. And they'd rather destroy a property outright than risk someone ELSE making a nickel off it.
