I believe roman coins are not uncommon(check Ebay),so they probably aren't worth much to archaeologists. Knowing the location they were found, now that's the treasure.

What is it you are going on whinging about ?

The dude was a treasure hunter , get it ? He was carrying a metal detector , right ?

I'm guessing he wasn't out looking for a Muslim with a bomb in his underpants , but rather , some TREASURE , permaybehaps ?

According to your estimation , he did the 'right thing' , so what's your beef ?

If not for this treasure hunter , those coin would still be moldering into dust for probably centuries more , so why begrudge him a few quid for his effort ?

'...A coroner is set to declare the find a treasure trove at an inquest on 22 July, paving the way for Somerset County Council to buy it from Mr Crisp and the landowner. Each is entitled to a 50 per cent share of its value under the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Its worth is not yet known.

Mr Crisp's discovery is only slightly smaller than the largest ever British Roman coin hoard, of 54,912 pieces, found in two pots near Marlborough, in 1978. A selection of the Frome coins, found in April, is to go on display at the British Museum from 22 July.

The largest ever hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold was found last year in Staffordshire in a farm field by Terry Herbert, an amateur metal detector who lived alone on disability benefit. It was valued at £3.3m, containing more than 5kg (11lb) of gold and 1.3kg (2.9lb) of silver.'

My beef is with the people who criticize him for doing the right thing, who encourage the destruction of archeological artefacts and their circumstances for the sake of greed.

I have absolutely no idea what motivated you to bring terrorists into this.

Think about it: Whatever you find, they will take, if they know you have it.

I have no idea why they are custodians of history. Anyone can do the historical research, and museums have far more stock than they can ever put out. The limitation is not the historical artifacts, it's crowd management. So yes, sure, in theory it should be there for more people to enjoy. Realistically, it will have more people enjoying it in your home. As for the information, you can blog about it later. Just don't sit their off the coast of Great Britain and say "Hey, I found a billion bucks in silver, can I keep it?"

Except it begins with digging up, documenting and cataloguing, responsibly and scientifically. It continues with sharing that information widely and in a high academic standard, not on some blog with no peer review. Research is what it all revolves around, and preservation. Not just showing it around some people visiting.

Idiot treasure hunters nearly destroyed the Nebra skydisk in 1999 and they certainly disturbed the place where it was originally buried, making it rather difficult to properly draw conclusions. This was a significant find and it was through luck that they managed to catch them trying to sell it, bigger luck that the collection of artefacts was not sold off separately.

Artefacts in a museum or state-owned institution are available for study to pretty much anyone qualified. Privately owned and kept, access and information is much more limited. Research and potential insight are hampered quite a bit.

The very smallest minority of treasure hunters would be able to treat an important find with the required know-how and resources, or even judge what kind of find might be significant and what not. So I'm quite fine with requiring by law that every find is protected through ownership of the state and guaranteed to receive proper care - with the in-built monetary recompense for the finder, even if it's "only" a part of the estimated value.
