Excellently spoken. Unfortunately, THEY didn't warp our identity, but "we're" doing a pretty good job of it on our own, with our pettiness and hatred, and our politicians are doing an excellent job of taking advantage of it.

Once again: Obama spoke about the right of freedom of religion. He never addressed his own opinion on the COMMUNITY CENTER with a prayer room. He has yet to speak to his own feelings on the matter, and I hope never will. It is his job, as President, to remind the country of the principles upon which it is built, nothing more

Yes, he was foolish to not make the caveat at the same time that he was not expressing support of the COMMUNITY CENTER, that was a faux pas. But once it was being utilized by the right so effectively, I don't see he had any choice but to clarify or let the misrepresentation stand.

He never expressed support for the COMMUNITY CENTER, he reminded us that our country believes in freedom of religion. He did not backtrack, he clarified that he HADN'T expressed support for the COMMUNITY CENTER.

The Republicans are doing an excellent job, with the help of the MSM, of portraying it otherwise, and the American people are swallowing it whole cloth. Those are the facts.

As to Bush, that's a laugh. Of COURSE he was for freedom of religion, CHRISTIAN religious zealots helped put him in office. He didn't give them what they wanted, buthe constantly spoke about religion and helped them gain power in the government. But I'm not sure anyone asked him about freedom of OTHER religions, and he was never called upon to act on that issue, that I'm aware of.

His bias toward governmental involvement with religion was so well known it was a joke. Jokes happen because there is a grain of truth in them:

Nonetheless, the fact that Bush would be assumed to agree with Obama on the issue of freedom of religion somehow makes us miss Bush? We can't know how he really believes on this issue unless he speaks out, which he chooses not to do. I wonder why?

Assuming that the mosque is an issue, it is not a first amendment issue. No one is arguing that muslims ought not be allowed to practice their brutal bronze age superstitions; the government has taken to steps to abridge their religious freedoms. This is really a matter of taste; many folks find the location distasteful, the symbolism obvious. That people react does not demonstrate deviation from hollowed principles.

I hope they build the damned thing; itd give conservatives something to cry about, and tears taste good.
