BY RON PAUL | AUGUST 27, 2010

As one who is opposed to centralization, I am wary of attempts to turn a grassroots movement against big government like the Tea Party into an adjunct of the Republican Party. I find it even more worrisome when I see those who willingly participated in the most egregious excesses of the most recent Republican Congress push their way into leadership roles of this movement without batting an eye -- or changing their policies!

As many frustrated Americans who have joined the Tea Party realize, we cannot stand against big government at home while supporting it abroad. We cannot talk about fiscal responsibility while spending trillions on occupying and bullying the rest of the world. We cannot talk about the budget deficit and spiraling domestic spending without looking at the costs of maintaining an American empire of more than 700 military bases in more than 120 foreign countries. We cannot pat ourselves on the back for cutting a few thousand dollars from a nature preserve or an inner-city swimming pool at home while turning a blind eye to a Pentagon budget that nearly equals those of the rest of the world combined.

Our foreign policy is based on an illusion: that we are actually paying for it. What we are doing is borrowing and printing money to maintain our presence overseas. Americans are seeing the cost of this irresponsible approach as their own communities crumble and our economic decline continues.

I see tremendous opportunities for movements like the Tea Party to prosper by capitalizing on the Democrats' broken promises to overturn the George W. Bush administration's civil liberties abuses and end the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A return to the traditional U.S. foreign policy of active private engagement but government noninterventionism is the only alternative that can restore our moral and fiscal health. I am optimistic, and our numbers are increasing!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It looks like Ron Paul is as dismayed as I am by the Republican Party trying to buy out the Tea Partiers while abandoning some of the core principles of reducing military expenditure and intrusive overseas adventurism.

I hope he can help restore the Tea Party, but I fear he will be attacked.

Ha, as if they'd do it.

Therein lies a lot of the problem, the matter of the trust and goodwill they have squandered by pandering to the GOP, in much the same fashion the Libertarian party has, cause they are unwilling to potentially alienate current GOP support for future support from more liberal sources, that whole short-sighted bird in the hand thing, which is downright foolish because fiscal responsibility is supposed to be a conservative value.

That policy reminds me of the fall of a cycle shop far north of here, which I'll not name.

They refused to offend some of their core customers by removing certain racist/sexist/otherwise offensive material from their inventory, which is of course entirely their right to do...

But eventually that core clientel and their attitude, began to have a negative impact on their business, driving off all the other customers to where the owners of the business were forced to actively pander to some seriously unsavory people in order to remain financially afloat, and the owners did *not* have those same values, but were caught in a trap of their own making.

And then it came to cases when that core clientel demanded a racist and illegal store policy be implimented, and the owners refused, resulting in them being boycotted and blacklisted by the only people still willing to shop there.

Now the place is an empty shell.

Every time I think of the Libertarians, and the Tea Party, I think of that empty shell, and how it got that way, and I see the same mistake, repeated over, and over, and over...

Till they learn from it, I'll have nothin to do with em.

Paradox of politics:

You can't survive long without selling yourself.

You can't survive (as anything more than an empty shell of a prostitute) if you do.

I guess that is why very few principled persons go into politics.

Ron Paul is a fucking miracle.

Actually, Ron Paul set the example for the mistakes Tea Party is making. I mean, obviously I admire his integrity, but I've always had my doubts about his decision to work withing the two-party system. It's a tough call, and he probably has had more of in impact by playing ball (at least superficially) with a major party. But that decision leads right into the risky sorts of compromise we're seeing with the Tea Party. That's probably why he feels obligated to at least try to steer them away from it.

The Tea Party was born out of necessity due to the corrupted reality of Republicans abandoning Conservative principles during the last decade. There is no future for the Republican Party without the Tea Party.

Very true, Sarge - it's also why I don't play ball with moderates of religious factions either, they come in, get the territory, and then the damn fanatics crowd in, set up shop, and send em out for more - they wind up a front man for an oppressive scheme where that is their intention or not.

I really wish to hell the man woulda founded his own party while the iron was hot, but that ship has done sailed and sank, I'm afraid.

Grayson has potential though, that's a rising star which could carry Paul as a veep, carry em both right to the top, cause it's not like anyone ELSE has any cards to play but blamin each other and calling the other side worse.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Thank you Sarge; yes, I did find it cogent and right on point. It's lovely to read sensible, cognizant oratory from someone on the right, especially one who sees the pitfalls of the recent Republican Party's so badly screwing up their tenants, and their misguided support of the military complex. That the Tea Party is pulling the Republican Party SO far to the right is disconcerting, but I definitely agree that the GOP's attempt to co-opt them, while representing a dichotomy which is against their very tenants, is reprehensible.

In a perfect world, it would be nice to see the GOP recognize the comeuppance the Tea Party represents for the right and incorporate those aspects of it which point out the cynicism of how they've behaved, while rejecting the more extreme aspects of the Tea Party candidates.

In a perfect world, that is...

As it is, I can't help but feel a tiny bit euphoric about the concept of a Paul/Grayson ticket...hey, I'm allowed to fantasize! Grayson's flamboyance and (I believe) sincerity combined with Paul's moderation of his more extreme positions, along with some of Paul's good ideas and his integrity, would be FUN to watch!

Okay, fantasy finished.

I don't see the Tea Party as compromising on ANYTHING, personally. I see that as part of their problem. Extremism is always dangerous, and in an atmosphere such as today's, I think doubly dangerous in that those who vote for them might be dismayed at what they actually get.

I don't think Paul compromising with either party would have helped him; in that I agree with Sig's (rather intense) points, that both parties are corrupt and I think would reject Paul BECAUSE of the very integrity he represents.

Again: we need at least a viable third party, if not more. Alternatively, or perhaps in addition, campaign reform would go a long ways. Maybe the British system makes for confusion and difficulty in being workable, but it also makes for COMPROMISE, which is the only way I believe real progress is made.
