Quote:Also Milimetric scanners are not 'draconian', 'draconian' would be shooting everyone of middle eastern origin and/or muslim persuasion before they could get on a plane.
Quote:I would also note that it's impossible to prevent suicide bombings by intelligence alone because you get a massive amount of data from SIGINT alone and you have to determine what is valuable and what is noise, guess wrong and you're in deep trouble.
Quote:Also last time I checked, CIA and MI5/6 do want to prevent terrorism and the MI5 or MI6 are certainly competent, I cannot speak for the CIA

Just TRAIN the drivers adequately, and TEST them correctly!!!! I don't give a fuck if someone's talking on their cellphone or eating a McDonald's breakfast while driving as long as they can DRIVE WELL!!!! The had-it-with-stupidity Chrisisall

I have tremendous respect for commercial airline pilots, especially since aviation safety is one of my hobby studies, and having heard many a CVR tape, these guys are natural heroes who even when obviously doomed, never ever quit trying to save the plane and passengers, right up to the very end... If we can't trust them, there ain't no point to having planes in the first damned place. We need to back this guy all the way, or have no one to blame but ourselves.

Don't know where your boss flies out of, but I've contributed two or three small (1.5" blade) pocket knives with plastic handles to TSA because I forgot they were in my briefcase. They haven't missed one yet. Maybe your local airports aren't as on the ball as National or Dulles. "Keep the Shiny side up"

Quote:Originally posted by HKCavalier: I find it very interesting that the folk who're saying "no big deal" have nothing to say about the specific issue: a pilot in good standing is refused entry to his place of work because he won't submit to this invasive nonsense. Y'know, you get a job at Walmart, you got to expect to be drug tested and treated like garbage, but this pilot was under the false impression that he was a trusted employee. I also find it very interesting that the folks saying "go ahead and strip search me"--correct me if I'm wrong here--are all men. Certain men on the internet and elsewhere continually respond to women's (and other men's) complaints of being objectified or sexualized or otherwise demeaned in their bodies with the man crowing "I wounldn't mind a little objectification/sexualization/humiliation, etc. heh heh heh," as if the complaints (and by extension, the people making them) are just too pathetic to be taken seriously. I'm reminded of Freud's old argument that a patient has to pay for therapy in order to value the process. Some folk around here seem to feel that security doesn't really count UNLESS it involves an abridgement of rights; and the more one's rights are abridged the better the security has got to be! The government is selling this "security" and these invasions are "what the market will bear." If this is truly the consensus among "most Americans" then our nation is well and truly fucked. HKCavalier Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.
