Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...
Quote:Firefighters continued to work with hot spots Thursday night inside the Westfield Galleria, but the main questions now are when the mall will reopen and what kind of economic hit the region will take. Officials still do not know the full extent of the damage at the 1.3 million-square-foot mall, which police say was set ablaze by a 23-year-old disturbed man who had barricaded himself inside a store there Thursday morning. The suspect, Alexander Corney Piggee, a Sacramento man who was recently fired from a fast food job, was booked into the Placer County Jail on aggravated arson and making criminal threats charges, but was taken to an area hospital earlier Thursday night for treatment of an unspecified ailment. Friends say Piggee was a quiet and friendly man whose alleged actions were completely out of character. But some said he had been acting erratically recently and authorities say he is a suspect in two other arsons Wednesday — one at an Antelope area Walmart, the other at an Antelope-area home. Some of the damage to the Roseville mall stemmed from the fact that firefighters were delayed in going inside the structure because authorities were concerned that a backpack Piggee left behind may have contained explosives. "It has affected our ability to get inside as quickly as we wanted to," said Roseville fire spokesman Dennis Mathisen. Firefighting units from around the region fought all day to save the region's largest mall, which just two years ago underwent a $240 million expansion.
