A gunman who opened fire on his co-workers at a Walmart in Reno, Nevada, was arrested without incident Friday after a six-hour standoff with authorities, Reno police said.

Three employees were injured and two remained hospitalized Friday night in serious to stable condition, Lt. Mohammad Rafaqat told CNN.

John Gillane, 46, will be charged with three counts of attempted murder in the shootings, Rafaqat said.

Had an interesting discussion sort of related to this topic today.

Remember, I wear a class-II armored vest under my jacket, and my newest Mk65 field jacket (gave the old one to my niece) is lined with a layer of ballistic cloth in between the inner and outer layers, ok ?

So I was asked if I had to choose between my pistol, and my armor, which one I would leave behind.

Answer: The Pistol.

I'm not the crack shot I once was anymore, AND there's very few problems shootin someone or something is going to solve that running away wouldn't - but light armor, while it's still not going to protect you against some nutter with an Ak or such, does substantially boost your survival chances, and it's rather effective insulation against many of lifes other indignities as well.

Just an idle thought on the matter, since a a decent pistol and a decent vest cost about the same, and most people can't shoot worth a damn even if I did trust their judgement, you know ?

DREAMTROVE

Every day, twelve times more people will be killed by clerical error in a hospital than by violence in the streets. Twenty times more people will die of prescription drug overdose than will die of anything related to illicit drugs. Just putting a little perspective. According to international watchdogs, Medical malpractice is now the number one cause of death in america, followed by cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Depending on your statitstics source, heart disease may come in first.

Most traumatic deaths will be by botched surgery, followed by motor vehicles, followed by guns. If you're killed by a gun, the person most likely to be holding the trigger is you*

* Statistics omit war and more notably people killed by police. I hope Frem can fill in some data on this, I've done some research on this in the past and know enough to know that it's a pretty large statistical factor, but not how large. It may be larger than crime.

Relatively, the chances of being killed by terrorism are less than drowning in your bathtub, cracking your head on your living room floor or eating at a fast food restaurant.

Thank you for pointing this out.

Sometimes, I wonder if people actually think about this. We are giving up SO MUCH to fight terrorists. Even if the threat is as real and prominent as they say (which I doubt), we would only be addressing a tiny fraction of our total risk. Losing so much to gain so little, even if all those security measures were effective.

The following ratios were compiled using data from 2004 National Safety Council Estimates, a report based on data from The National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, 2003 mortality data from the Center for Disease Control was used.

-- You are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack

-- You are 12,571 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack

-- You are 11,000 times more likely to die in an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane

-- You are 1048 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack

--You are 404 times more likely to die in a fall than from a terrorist attack

-- You are 87 times more likely to drown than die in a terrorist attack

-- You are 13 times more likely to die in a railway accident than from a terrorist attack

--You are 12 times more likely to die from accidental suffocation in bed than from a terrorist attack

--You are 9 times more likely to choke to death on your own vomit than die in a terrorist attack

--You are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist

--You are 8 times more likely to die from accidental electrocution than from a terrorist attack

-- You are 6 times more likely to die from hot weather than from a terrorist attack

This of course presumes you see any difference between a terrorist which has a badge and official sanction, and any other kind.

Oh, and you owe me a cookie.

Thanx, guys; that's the point I'm trying to make. The obsession here with terrorism, MUSLIM terrorism, and "proving" that Islam is a violent religion, is essentially a "strawman" argument (as I see it used here), in that it completely igores the REAL dangers we face.

And I like the comparison of "how much for how little", as THAT impacts our daily lives far more than any threat of terrorism to us individually. Governments always prefer to have the populace united against any common enemy than focused on their own shortcomings, and I guess it pisses me off to a degree that it's worked on so many, especially those here who are, in my opinion, VERY obsessed with one "enemy".

Personally, I think there are two aspects of the obsession, one being that, admit it, terrorism is "exciting" in its way, it reflects the black-and-white, easy-to-hate violence we see on TV and movies. Second, I think it's a way of avoiding looking at the real, serious problems one faces, as well as making a convenient "enemy" of those trying to bring perspective to the discussion.
