A 24-year-old man committed suicide live on the internet, Japanese police said Friday.

Some online chat forum users egged on the man after he posted that he was considering suicide, local media reported. Some chatters urged him not to, while others said he was lying, local media said.

The man started live-streaming his own hanging. Viewers called police.

The suicide was reported to police in the northern Japanese city of Sendai about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, said the vice chief of the Sendai North Police.

Officers found the man at his home, after he had hanged himself. They determined his address with help from internet chat sites.

Police released no further information, citing privacy protections in cases of suicide.

An image has been floating around cyberspace, showing a person hanging from what looks like a fabric belt, looped across a horizontal pole or rod.

The streaming service Ustream said the image was not doctored and that it shows the man who killed himself.

Ustream removed the image after users flagged it, said spokesman Fumihiro Ito.

The company planned to beef up monitoring of user content following the suicide, Ito said.

You knew this would happen eventually, if it hadn't already. My heart goes out to him, and my intense anger to those who "egged him on". Sick people exist everywhere.

Not new either.

Suicide is a strange state, and a part of it is revenge. Suicides want an audience. My parents went to a party at college given by a rich kid who said he was going to kill himself, and this was his last party. Then someone said, well, I thought you were going to kill yourself, but I see you're not, so we're going to head out, and so everyone left. At they walked down the front steps, the guy went into his room and blew his brains out.

He was one of the heirs of Heinz, he's now be related by marriage to Kerry, if he were still alive.

I'd met this woman shortly before her suicide. She was doing some stories on the college I was attending.

Thanx, Frem. Yer sweet.

DT, I agree about the attention thing. They say people who threaten or attempt are more likely to be successful eventually, and we'll never know if it's because they were hoping someone would find them or stop them. It's a terrible thing.

Jo threatened suicide a LOT, which is a typical symptom of borderline, and it was always for attention. It was pretty unpleasant, but we had to pay attention 'cuz we never know. One time, tho', she swiped Jim's rifle, told me later she intended to kill herself with it. Hard playing along to that one, as there was no way she could do so. Also the time I went down and found her walking across the floor wobbling; she said she'd tried to take enough pills to kill herself but fell asleep before she could finish. Right. She was one sad lady; sad enough to tell me she had leukemia before she came and actually fake an entire day over the phone pretending she'd just come home from chemo. Turned out she lied in the hopes I'd bring her to America; it worked.

But people who egg others on, that's reprehensible. Unconscionable. Stupid.
