U.S. sending tanks to Afghanistan for first time

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...
Quote: The United States is beefing up its firepower in Afghanistan by employing heavily armored tanks in Afghanistan for the first time in the nine-year war, a military spokesman said Friday. The U.S. Marine Corps plans to use a company of M1A1 Abrams tanks in restive Helmand province by early spring, said Marine Maj. Gabrielle Chapin. The M1A1 tank is the fastest and most deadly ground combat weapons system available. It will allow for more aggressive missions while mitigating risks to U.S. forces, the military said. U.S. forces used the tanks to battle insurgents successfully in Iraq's Anbar province, Chapin said. "They bring superior optics, maneuverability and precision firepower that will enable us to isolate insurgent forces from key population centers and provide the ability to project power into insurgent safe havens," he said. Other coalition forces, including those from Canada, already have used tanks in Afghanistan. The decision comes as Afghanistan tops the agenda at the NATO summit that starts Friday in Lisbon, Portugal, and amid a public dispute between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and NATO leaders over military strategy.

I think he has some good intentions (like shutting down Guantanamo), but the office of the Presidency simply isn't powerful enough to actually implement good intentions. All presidents are warmongers, in one way or another. Maybe it is to appease the public thirst for blood, I dunno. That is just a fact of life, unfortunately. Can't Take (my gorram) Sky

Fear that some republican might come to power and stop them from having the abortion that the elected official has no intention of stopping, no power to stop, and the voter has no intention of ever having. Maybe they think that the republican would cancel welfare, not realizing that GOP would never bite the hand that feeds it, welfare recipients make such good consumers. But, they're manipulated. That's why they just re-elected Bush. Only they called him Obama when they did it.

Quote: Okay, sure, republicans are largely the same way, but at the moment, I think the GOP resistance to the GOP is a lot stronger, and had been all through the Bush years, with about 1/3 of all republicans reviling the president.
Quote: You know who has to be really disgusted with today's democrats? Yesterday's democrats. Really. In the 1960s, liberals across america were ready to burn LBJ at the stake. In 1968 they were not ready to take "Any democrat." They demanded a better democrat. And yes, they got Nixon instead. But Nixon wasn't worse than Johnson. Even from a purely liberal point of view, hell, Nixon was probably more liberal than Johnson, and he did, eventually, get us out of the war.
