Or at least some of them aren't:

Christine O'Donnell Calls Extending Unemployment Benefits a "Tragedy"

In remarks during a Virginia Tea Party appearance on Tuesday, former Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell called the recent extension of unemployment benefits a "tragedy," which she likened to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the death of Elizabeth Edwards.

"Today marks a lot of tragedy," O'Donnell said. "Tragedy comes in threes. Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth Edwards's passing and Barack Obama's announcement of extending the tax cuts, which is good, but also extending the unemployment benefits."

When questioned by reporters about her use of the word "tragedy," O'Donnell backtracked, saying the "tragedy" to which she had meant to refer was a flaw in Mr. Obama's logic.

"If we're going to extend the jobless benefits we have got to cut spending programs, and that's the flaw in his announcement," she said, according to the Hill. "That's the tragedy."

And you wonder that I mock them, JS? Here we have another fruitcake with no actual legislative experience spouting as an "authority figure" just like Palin. And she'll continue getting attention; half-term governor, failed candidate; if they sing to the base and keep themselves out there, they'll keep getting attention, deserved or not.

The tax-cut "compromise" isn't done yet. Who wants to bet the Republicans, having gotten away with so much for virtually nothing, won't push for MORE now?

Of course they are going to push for more. That's their job.

The Democrats' job is to push for what they want.

I know you guys always jump on DT for being anti-liberal when he says this, but I think he has a point. The weakness of the left is that they are a bit of a weak-spined pushover.

In a way, it is a strength, a reflection of their empathy and whatnot. But in politics, it translates into a lot of compromises that don't benefit their ideologies.

To be fair, Stalin and Mao weren't pushovers, but we don't want to go there either.

Listen, the Republicans won't be happy until all the rich people get to keep all their money, all the wars and war toys we ever want get to be used, the Christian right morality is enforced on the entire country, and all public assistance and welfare is gone.

I hope to God they always stay unhappy.

Uh, Blue, didn't O'Donnell get government benefits of one sort or another for the years she was running as a perpetual candidate?

And yes, CTTS, I agree with you, and Maddow said the same thing back last year. That it's their job, and it's the Dem's job to fight back for what THEY believe in. Perfectly accurate.

I just hope they stay unhappy, VERY unhappy, for a long time to come, because I see a lot of what they want as both damaging to Americans and America, and just plain wrong.

I don't think either side wants to be happy. If everything goes the way you wanted it then everything that happens as a result is your fault.

Keep the Shiny side up

According to what I heard on NPR this afternoon, Barbara Hill (the outgoing chairperson of the Congressional Black Caucus) and her caucus weren't too happy with the legislation either, since - even though it continued unemployment benefits for 13 months - it'd continue the Bush tax cuts.

That's politics.

Your idea of more and more on government reliance is what's damaging to Americans and America.

I don't believe in "more and more on government reliance"--I know that's what you assume, obviously, and what no doubt others have extrapolated, but it's wrong. I believe in "more effective" government, and in many ways reliance on government is bad; I just don't believe it's right to pay these guys huge salaries to stop everything in its tracks. Government desperately needs reform, but yes, I do believe in SOME safety nets...others are absurd and wrong. Almost all are ineffective and need restructuring or removal the way they are now.

I know it's easy and convenient to claim I'm one of those who wants us all to "suck the government's tit", but it's a simplification and wrong.
