Hello,

Does anyone have additional information about this incident? It appears that a crime was prosecuted in some kind of religious court instead of the criminal courts.

Since the abuse occurred in the 1970's, the statute of limitations for criminal - or even civil - action may have expired by the time charges were filed.

The Archdiocese booting the priest may be about the only action which can be taken. At least they're not just shuffling him off to another parish.

Quick - where's Sharron Angle and Newt Gingrich?

Oh. This ISN'T "Sharia law"? It's a "religious court" that ISN'T Muslim?

Never mind then. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Hello,

It's a terrible shame that the only action that could be taken in this case is firing the offender from his job after 30-40 years.

I can only hope that a more recent victim comes forward and brings criminal charges against this bastard.

Defrocked my ass, they shoulda charged him with heresy, excommunicated him, and handed him to the damn inquisition.

I mean, if it's good enough for the unbelievers, right... if anything they should be MORE fierce when it comes to treachery from one of thier own, but then, that religion is kinda based on it, from top to bottom anyway - what can one expect from a diety which happens to be a shameless liar even in the very first chapter of their own holy book ?

Ok, yes, this is obligatory snark, but still my point holds, just like I feel with police - once you've sworn oath to something, to serve a cause, when you VIOLATE that, you should be punished *more*, not less, severely than someone who never did, because it is a betrayal of trust.

Yer so funny, Frem. Remember of whom you speak...!

I don't think this has to do with a "trial" that isn't by our laws; if it's within the Church, the Church can hold a "trial" to kick him out. But I think he should have been brought up on charges in a LEGAL court and punished...not that any of them ever are, right? Hey, other religions are fair game, but a CHRISTIAN one? Hell, no; remmber, "this is a Christian nation" and "our country was founded on Christian principles". So that doesn't count.

I'm not sure, but has ANY priest ever been brought up on charges of molestation in a criminal court, much less found guilty and sentenced? I don't remember hearing of any. The Church takes care of its own.

Try googling 'priest convicted of molestation' and you'll find some.

There's this, for example:

Note that many of these abuses were reported after the statute of limitations for criminal or civil charges against an individual priest had expired, so civil suits against the diocese are often the only recourse.

Ahhh, statute of limitations. You're right about that. The Church protects its own until the statute runs out (which is frequently how long it takes for the victim to grow up and get the courage to step forward). Smooth move on their part. And don't tell me they didn't know what they were doing, given how many priests were quietly moved from diocese to diocese after the Church KNEW they'd been pedophiles yet covered it up!

Just curious, are saying you believe God wrote the Bible? Also, both versions of Genesis are included, and not hidden from us, so I wouldn't really call that lying. Sure, it could have been recorded in a manner a mite easier to make sense of, but then again, it has survived thousands of years, 5 cultures, and multiple translations. 'Could be making us think and investigate a little might have been the point of that and many other chapters.

I know you're just snarking, I'm just good naturedly snarking back (if I am understanding and using the term correctly). I could say a lot on this, but I think it might be smarter to leave it alone. 'Doesn't really contribute the Anthony's question and would 'jack' they thread, assuming I'm using that term correctly.

EDIT: In hindsight, none of what I said is entirely relevant, just a knee jerk defensive reflex, feel free to ignore.

I'll come down on the side that says there was no "god" involved in writing the bible. It's the words of man, and they're mumbled and jumbled in all the translations that followed.

No worries, I was just busting chops on the whole stupid "apple" thing, which I always felt ridiculous, but in the conventional telling - He *does* lie to them, yanno.

To keep this on topic though, I offer this tidbit of the Churchs knowing complicity, since they would stash known offenders here and then recycle them into other parishes without even warning them.

Ain't the crime, it's the cover-up.
