Everyone knows Mavericks is dangerous; usually only the pros surf there. Apparently this guy had only surfed Mavericks once before. Basically: Ouch!

A surfer remained hospitalized Sunday after he almost drowned at Mavericks surfing area near Half Moon Bay on Saturday, according to news reports and interviews with authorities.

GrindTV, a surfing website, identified the surfer as Jacob Trette.

Paramedics called to the scene about 10 a.m. Saturday found a 30-year-old surfer who had been rescued and revived by surfers and an emergency medical technician, with the help of bystanders who were at the surf spot, said David Cosgrave, a battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The surfer was flown out to Stanford University Medical Center. A spokesman at the hospital said he could not comment on the condition of the patient.

[Updated, 5:15 p.m.: A hospital spokesman said the surfer is in critical condition.]

Officials did not name the man Sunday. An Internet post from Frank Quirarte, a photographer who witnesses the incident, said the surfer had suffered a brain injury but was moving his arms and legs.

"They're lowering his body temp so he doesn't use as much oxygen and keeping him heavily sedated,” the post read. Too early to tell how much damage has been done if any.

A 25-foot wave took the pack of surfers by surprise. Video footage shows surfers trying to paddle over the wave, but several surfers were sucked in by the wave when it crashed down. The footage shows another monstrous wave striking a surfer identified as Trette.
Once the waves had cleared, Russell Ord, a photographer who was on a personal water craft, moved in to pull one surfer out of the water. As he was bringing the surfer toward shore, he came along Trette’s body floating face-up in the whitewater, according to GrindTV.
Ord jumped in and pulled Trette’s body onto the rescue sled attached to his vessel and brought him to shore.

Like I said: Ouch!

Half Moon Bay, by the way, is lovely...we used to go tide pooling out there at low tide.

It's the same place the crowd watching last year's event got swamped, by the way; they've now roped it off so spectators can't get down on the beach to watch.

Yeah, we can't hold a candle to Hawaii, but it can still be dangerous!

Heck, the fact that he only got *injured* means that he's LUCKY. That surf has killed pro surfers. Lovely, daunting, ugly, nasty, awesome place, Mavericks. It makes me *wish* I were a surfer. A really, really GOOD surfer.

America loves a winner!

Caught the interview w/ the guy who rescued the surfer. He was an Auzzie, and he used a wave runner to get out there. Seems wave runners aren't allowed in that area, so he may get ticketed, for saving this guy's life.

JONGSSTRAW

Surfing legend Mark Foo was killed there in 1994. Wonder if these young surfers remember that shocker.

Yeah, the ban on wave runners is just recent; good thing that Aussie firefighter was around. I don't know if Ord had the "official okey dokey" or not, but in addition to taking pictures at the time, he was serving as a rescuer who would swoop in and grab surfers who wiped out or lost their boards.

Mavericks is something few surfers mess with, around here at least. No doubt those from Hawaii would consider it meek compared to what they deal with, but for California surfers, it's quite dangerous. And yes, it is where a number of surfers have died, including Foo. Think that's far enough back this batch of youngsters wouldn't remember...that's 16 years ago, I don't think a lot of surfers are old enough. Dunno if that's growing up makes one less stupid or more scared!

Betcha those five wipe-outs won't soon forget it, much less Trette, who's supposed to be recovering and expected to recover fully, thank goodness. Mavericks has had a reputation for ages; there are tons of other places to surf along the Coast, especially Santa Cruz, which "regular" surfers frequent.

Like I said, it's also the place the crowd was swamped last year and people were injured. Personally, while I understand the concept of conquering something, I think surfing is fun enough in just normal waves; risking one's life to do it seems stupid. Just my opinion, in my old age.

From all accounts I've ever heard, Mavericks is universally respected and feared. The best surfers in the world aren't cocky enough to talk about "conquering" Mavericks. They meekly admit that they're happy if they SURVIVE it. It's a bit like Everest, or the Eiger. If you're into the sport, you feel like you kind of have to try it, but it's more out of respect and fear than for pure fun.

It's known the world over as one of the most dangerous of places. It's not just the wave size - it's the rocks, the brutality of it, the cold, the remoteness - it's one of those rare places where, when things go wrong, they go horribly wrong in a hurry, and you're completely on your own to deal with it.

I've little doubt that banning Waverunners was aimed at trying to keep people out of some of the biggest waves, since tow-in surfing is one of the only ways to get into some of them. Good thing this rescuer was where he wasn't supposed to be!

Wow, I never knew that. In comparison to the wave sizes in Hawaii, I always thought Mavericks was just "legendary" for America. But yes, our side of the Ocean is FRIGID, and if there are rocks, that would make it really dangerous.

That's interesting, tho', I always thought we were puny in every respect to the surfing in Hawaii and other places.

People around here surf Mavericks, but only the most competent surfers even try. It's why they have the competition; because it's the hairiest surf we have on the West Coast.

I'm so used to surfers NEVER going out except in wetsuits, I tend to forget we're so cold...out here it's just a given, and I was initially surprised to find out water in the Gulf is warmer, tho' I knew about the Islands. Here, nobody ever, EVER goes out without a wetsuit--they wouldn't last long enough to catch the first wave!

Thanx for the info; I have to revise my thinking when it comes to Mavericks, I guess!

It's funny, because I *still* remember how freaking cold that water is, and it's been decades since I lived in Cali! I was in and around Monterey, and no matter how warm the weather was, the water was frigid. I was in L.A. a few years back, and had to at least get in the Pacific while I was there. I managed to wade in up to my waist, but I was sure I was turning blue, so got out. And that was Los Angeles, in July. Still freaking frigid.

FREMDFIRMA

My buddy Tei woulda topped that if the National Guard hadn't hauled him and his board off the beach when Isabel was pounding the crap outta Corpus Christi - whether he *survived* or not might be a question, but he has a tremendous knack for surviving his own unbelievable boneheadedness, how else does one explain him walking away with naught more than bumps and bruises after augering in a naval aircraft while stone blind drunk ?

People are crazy, that they are.
