Ok, if they wanna do it, if they're willing to pay for it, then really I wouldn't stop em, but seriously....

RoboCop statue reaches funding goal

Leaving aside that Robocop is kind of a monument to corporate exploitation, and this is a backhanded snark at Detroits ever growing crime problem (most of which seems, if you ask me, to be concentrated in it's GOVERNMENT..) I think it's kind of ridiculous.

But it's still kinda cool, in a weird sort of way.
I woulda rather had ED-209 myself.

There really is a kind of dark, bitter irony in that ACTUAL Detroit police suffer from the same malfunctions ED-209 does...

Never occurred to me that Ed 209 was a commentary on the police mentality, but of course it is. I just thought it was a comment on technology, all of the mistakes we were about to make like predator drones, etc.

Surely the crime rate must fall as they run out of people ;)

DT, the crime rate will fall when they start running out of police! :)

Wouldn't it be better to build statutes to all the cars formerly made in Detroit?

Oh, of course, how silly of me. And they cant run out of police, because when they do, they hire the remaining criminals. I suppose the real apocalyptic endgame of an american city is when there's no one left but the police. Then I imagine the city cops and county sheriff go to war with each other, the state police and the national guard.

The police have an amazing win-win racket. Every year the police chief goes to the city council asking for more money. He has two ploys he can use:

1) "Crime is down. We need more money so we can keep it that way."

2) "Crime is up. We need more money so we can get it down."

I can't recall a single time, ever, where the police have said "We need less money and fewer officers."

Our school district just recommended firing over a thousand teachers. Last week our police chief insisted he needs two MORE helicopters. A month ago the city cancelled its StarFlight medical helicopter program.

If it's a war, the police are winning, and the citizens are fucked.

I think you're very close, but slight modification:
Crime is up, we need more cops on the street
Crime is down, aren't we doing a great job?

Of course, what is crime? There's one sure way to make the crime rate go up: make more laws. Once you have laws, you need more cops. More laws, more crime, more cops.

I think like most of the system, the only way to solve it is to start over. This society has reached a point where it serves no purpose: our technology has been completely outsourced, we produce nothing, and internally, all of our systems are failing: kids learn more per hour at home than at school, the hospitals kill more people than they save, our military starts more wars than it stops, our housing programs raise the price of housing, not lower it, making more people homeless, our economy rewards theft, not innovation or industry, the govt. Sacrifices the environment rather than saving it, and restricts freedoms rather than protect them.

I see no reason for the society to exist. I think the only reason it subsists is because we let it.

HARDWARE

Exactly which city isn't full of weirdos? Look around any city and you can see these pointless expenditures of public money.

This is especially funny in that the Detroit of Robocop is a failed city about to be re-developed by a corporation. Life imitates art.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

Not public dosh, Hardware - although there's a rather extended cussing fit going on in Ann Arbor about that stupid fountain, for just that reason...

The Robocop statue will be entirely private/donation funded, so despite the weird/ridiculous concept of the notion, if folks wanna do it, more power to em, yanno ?

I still think ED-209 is more representative of the actual DPD however, up to and including the inability to get down a flight of stairs, given the combination of donuts and steroids bulking them up to the point where they can barely get in and out of the freakin squad cars...
