America loves a winner!

The military is controlled by civilians to protect the interest of this country.

Hitler had a mother and a father.

Stalin had a wives and children...

This guy's attempt to marginalize evil in the world, and claim that there was no bad intent in Central America, or the Mid East, directed towards the United States, you're flat out naive.

I applaud the message given, that we should not blindly go into battle or join the military under false impressions or ideas , and to understand that the primary function of the military is to protect this country. And that it achieves these goals by breaking things, and if needed, killing people.

Civilians who are politicians, with political agendas. That was his point, that the military is not protecting people. It is a pawn of the government, which is in turn, a pawn of whoever owns the govt. And it's not "we the people."

Indeed they did. And we should never forget that. We do what we must do to the "enemy," but we should do it with sorrow and regret and grief, that the "enemy" is human and one of us. Dehumanization and killing with glee and triumph is evil and wrong.

There is no intent sufficiently bad or powerful that merits military intervention, that merits our going in and uh...collaterally-damaging them all.

His point is nothing the military has done in the last 50 years or so was about protecting this country. So yes, that is the primary function of the military, but the military has not been doing its primary function for half a century at least. The military has been doing only secondary and tertiary duties for a while now.

It's like saying the primary function of teachers is to teach, but the system is such that teachers have not been teaching for a long time. Instead, they get relegated to secondary duties like babysitting, prison guarding, and training kids to take arbitrary tests.

Or doctors are supposed to be healing. But instead, they are filling out paperwork and pushing pills.

A lot of jobs are not what they are supposed to be. This guy is just giving potential recruits a heads up.

The alternative to having civilians ( politicians ) control the military is to have the military control itself... and thereby pretty much control everything else. The Founders saw how that would be a pretty bad idea.

Don't you think we should also feel anger, at those 'humans' who forced us to use the military in the first place ?

I'll give you that military action isn't always the best solution. It should be the last solution, but as we've seen, even Nobel Peace prize winners concede that force sometimes needs to be used.

The best line this guy gave was to remind potential recruits that while the military CAN provide for education and a great career, it's not the FUNCTION of it to do so. Those things are secondary.

The URL worked. Odd, I can't see the embedded video in Google Chrome.

Can't say what he said substantially wrong. If the politicians giving the military it's orders were ethical there would not be contradictions or conflict in the use of military force. Of course, once military force has been decided the politicians should stay the hell out of the way and let the military do it's job. Give them an objective and let the people who have studied military science decide how to best achieve those goals.

I laugh when I hear about military units being assigned to police a foreign city. Military units are not policemen. Not even MP units are good at policing civilians. It is like trying to herd sheep with a sledgehammer.

No dispute there. I'm sure this guy, having joined the military himself, would agree.

Keyword: Sometimes.

His point is that none of the times WE have used force qualifies as the "sometimes" that force is truly necessary to protect our country.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Indeed Hardware, and as a rule, even less effective.

Of course, if one needs more convincing, there's always Smedley Butler.

War Is A Racket
A speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4377.htm

What I did to the last moron considering military service was show him the first part of Full Metal Jacket and pointed out that in every training company, *someone* gets singled out as an "example" and destroyed pyschologically or physically just to show they can DO it, often more than one...
What if THAT, is you ?

While showing them some of the gory details of folks like Warren and Melton, killed by intent or accident during training and then listed as AWOL in order to prevent questions of why it happened.
What if THAT, is you ?

And then drove them around the block where the crippled, homeless, PTSD and alcohol/drug addicted vets hang out to panhandle after the army has destroyed their souls, their lives, families...
What if THAT, is you ?

Not to mention that signing up to become one of tyrannys triggermen puts them in opposition to everything they've ever believed in, how you gonna handle THAT, sonny-boy, cause "Just Following Orders" don't cut NO ice with me, just the opposite in fact.

The US Army has never, EVER, kept any of it's promises to the troops they use up and discard with all the regard of a used kleenex, and this has been true since Hamilton convinced George Washington to rip off and renege on paying most of the officers of the revolution, which damn near caused a coup at the time.

Believe me, I can most certainly show someone the ugly side of military service.

This is especially ironic in that I joined initially as a nuke-worshipping nihilist who wanted to kill EVERYBODY and was severely pissed that the job wound up to involve painting, mopping, mowing, and all manner of domestic bullshit I coulda done for Days Inn at a much better rate of pay - which is how the boys across the street got their hooks into me in the first damn place... although technically I qualify as a Conscientious Objector, NOT because I have any aversion to killing folk, but because I have an aversion to doing so for free, or at an hourly rate...

Anyhow, military service isn't what it's advertised as, that's for damn sure.
