Yeah, I heard about this one, and heard arguments on both sides. I don't know enough about it yet to have an opinion, I need to look into the facts and wording and such. But I have an inherent suspicion of it, for several reasons. Maybe we can get a discussion going to see what each of us thinks about it.

And, as usual, I have to point out that it neither "eliminates" Congress, nor gives the power of the purse entirely to Obama, who isn't a dictator. Just for clarity's sake. Will be interested to see what others have to say.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

GOP doesn't want to be faced with the tough decisions, so they abdicate responsibility altogether (as they did with the Iraq War), and then they'll campaign and run against the President raising the debt ceiling over their objections...

But they want the power to "disapprove", from what I heard. What are they going to do, sit in the corner shaking their heads in disappointment?

Make them take responsibility for it. If they're going to raise the debt ceiling, then raise it. If they're not, then let the economy collapse. But don't be shy about it and try to pass it on to someone else just to save your party the embarrassment of taking action.

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Heard McConnell somewhere yesterday. He said, Congress must act, that's their job, but if nothing happens, it'll be Obama's fault.

Say what? That's when I stopped listening.

Meanwhile, Obama hit 'em with the Big Gun: "If something doesn't pass, I'm not sure I can issue Social Security checks after Aug 1."

The most intelligent analysis I've seen is that all 3 sides have painted themselves into separate corners: the GOP can't back down on raising taxes; the Dems won't accept all cuts, especially to social programs; and Obama won't settle for a short term fix. If everybody is really locked in, there's nowhere to go, and no way to get there.

It feels like all three groups are bluffing on a busted flush, and raising the stakes to see who'll blink first and fold.

That's exactly what they're doin, NOBC.

But Obama undercut them severely, since a hefty chunk of the GOP base is older folk who damn well oughta know better, but still live in a pipe dream of their glory days...
A pipe dream which gets a little hard to believe in when the social security check doesn't come and the creditors get all pissy about it, don't you know.

They'll fold, you watch.

DREAMTROVE

Does anyome really think these guys are in competition with one another? What, did you guys miss the Bush years? It's a donkey and elephant show.

The bill does effectively turn the US into a dictatorship, not in a single-step, but incrementally. If the president can borrow money through executive authority it's logical to assume he could apply it to, say, an executive order he has made. If this bill doesn't accomplish that last middle step about spending decisions, some later bill, or executive order, will do so.

I assume this is a briar patch situation and that the GOP will claim this is a blame game, but really there never were two sides to this battle, it's one party and has been since the beginning, and Obama will pretend to not like the bill, which will pass, and then he will sign it aftera bogus "compromise."

Don't really think these guys care about who gets blamed for something nearly as much as they care about 14 trillion dollars, and if they wanted that 14 trillion gone, they wouldn't be in congress. Everyone is grabbing for a share.

Nah, that's been divvied up already, what they're REALLY fighting over is who has to soak up the public ire for it - and Obama wins that handily, cause despite all the whining and whinging about "entitlements", many of the hardball conservatives are either getting social security or other largess from the state, hypocrisy being their stock in trade, don't you know...

So by threatening to hold back the dosh, he not only puts all the onus on the GOP, he also manages to play on the moral cowardice of their kool-aid drinkers by making it look like HE holds the power, you see ?

Barry isn't devious enough to have come up with that, that ones all Biden, whos right good at this kinda thing, AND smart enough to keep a really low profile, unlike that fuckwit Cheney.

And me, I'm willing to play along, cause anything that further encourages a reign-of-terror Pogrom against the GOP is something I'll support - cause instead of playing ping-pong, we need to *destroy* one of these phonyass "sides", and then use the resultant power imbalance to tip the other off the cliff and end em both.

PS. Choice of the word Pogrom is entirely deliberate, cause that's *exactly* what I want to happen to them, and their supporters.

Isn't that along the same lines as the bit where if they voted on a bill and Congress didn't pass it, it would become law? Y'think they might be letting the mid-terms kind of get to 'em, like make 'em think they can get away with anything? They've certainly accepted that it means they can SAY anything, no matter how much of a lie or how disgusting and reprehensible about the Prez. This is the logical next step. "The people gave us the power; watch us use it!"

I tend to agree, NewOld:

I sure HOPE that's the case and that it's not President Compromise who blinks; he's compromising us right into the ground as it is!

In a nutshell.

I hear McConnel is taking a lot of flack from many in his party. Differing reasons I'm sure, but I can see how some would be scared because this IS a slippery slope, 'incrimentally' as DT said.
