Quote: Obama bows to Boehner; jobs speech will be Sept. 8 Published: August 31, 2011 Updated: August 31, 2011 - 11:10 PM WASHINGTON - In a retreat after an hours-long test of wills Wednesday, President Barack Obama agreed to deliver an address on jobs and the economy to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 8, yielding to House Speaker John Boehner, who had balked at Obama's request for a Sept. 7 speech. Obama's address still gives him a grand stage to unveil his economic agenda, but it falls on the same evening as the opening game of the National Football League season. White House officials were working on the precise timing of the speech. The change now will allow a planned Sept. 7 Republican presidential debate in Simi Valley, Calif., to proceed without Obama upstaging it. http://www2.tbo.com/news/breaking-news/2011/aug/31/4/obama-boehner-spar-on-timing-of-big-jobs-speech-ar-254419/?referer=None&shorturl=http://tbo.ly/qSf0bY

You seem to like using that word even more than the President does. I'm not really so sure it's something to be proud of, though; after all, what you're admitting to is that no white President was ever turned down in such a fashion, and you seem very proud of that fact. Quote:Boehner, in a letter to Obama, said the 8 p.m. speech would come less than two hours after the House is scheduled to complete legislative business, and the speaker recommended moving it back a day. Boehner's letter noted that security sweeps of the chamber usually take more than three hours. "There are considerations about the congressional calendar that must be made prior to scheduling such an extraordinary event," Boehner wrote. "With the significant amount of time -- typically more than three hours -- that is required to allow for a security sweep of the House chamber before receiving a president, it is my recommendation that your address be held on the following evening, when we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks." One senior GOP aide told CNN that "arranging a joint session of Congress isn't as simple as snapping our fingers."

Wow. Talk about a blatantly racist comment. No one brought the color of the President's skin into the discussion until you did, just right here. It's clear you view Obama as ONLY a 'black ' President, first and foremost, and the specifics of his policies as secondary.

Quote:Originally posted by AnthonyT: Hello, I disagree with your assessment, Raptor. I think the American people would like to hear him speak about his plan as soon as possible, and I think partisan politics unnecessarily delayed a very important policy communication. I am upset with Congress, because this very issue should be at the top of their agenda, but they seemed to feel comfy with pushing it back. I reiterate that I wish the President would simply communicate his policy position to the American people directly, and let Congress TIVO the thing to watch when they get home from their session. Maybe Congress isn't anxious to hear him speak about his plan, but I am. --Anthony _______________________________________________ “If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all” Jacob Hornberger “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err. Quote: Quote: The Speaker of the House controls Congress, as it is a separate branch of govt , and does not cater to the whim of who ever is in the White House. Not sure where you get the idea that the Speaker "controls Congress"; I'll bet that will come as quite a shock to the Senate. ;) Traditionally, when the President asks to speak to Congress, they comply and acquiesce, because between both houses of Congress and the President, he's the only one who was elected by the entire country, whereas they each represent, at best, half a state. In fact, it's such a tradition that in the history of the country, no President has ever been turned down. I think the word you used was "historic", as in, "John Boehner is being a dickhead of historic proportions."

You and you along brought up the issue of race w/ regards to the President. Own the racist remark. The flash mobs ? A completely different issue. Not even worth mentioning beyond that.

Obama tried to snooker the GOP by having his address the same night as the GOP debate, covered by MSNBC/ CNBC.
Quote: It was a petty, amateurish ploy on Obama's part, and it backfired, completely. He's still getting his audience, still talking to both houses of congress, so he's not being turned down in the least.

Quote: James Carville: White House ‘Out of Bounds’ Over Speech Flap By George Stephanopoulos Democratic strategist James Carville told me that the White House was in the wrong when it requested that the President address Congress on the same night and time as a Republican presidential debate. “I do think this is a really big debate and I think the White House was out of bounds…in trying to schedule a speech during a debate,” Carville said on “GMA.” This will be Gov. Rick Perry’s first debate, and as Carville said this morning the stakes are high. “Given a choice between watching a debate and the speech I would have watched the debate and I’m not even a Republican or even close to being a Republican,” he said, adding it will be a “barn burner.” The administration agreed to move the speech to Thursday- possibly competing with the kick off of the NFL season instead. The White House has been touting this jobs plan telling ABC News that he will propose tax relief, infrastructure investment and assistance for the long term unemployed. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/09/james-carville-white-house-out-of-bounds-over-speech-flap/
