"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Aides say he's expected to drop out tomorrow.

"Cain had not seen his wife since Ginger White, 46, came forward and said she had a sexual affair with Cain that lasted more than a decade. He has said they were only friends but acknowledged that he helped pay her monthly bills and expenses. His wife, Cain said, did not know of the friendship with White."

So, he admits he's known this woman for well over a decade, has "helped her out financially", and his wife didn't know anything about any of it... but there's nothing inappropriate going on, because as he says, he's never done anything inappropriate ever in his life with anyone.

Sounds more than a little fishy.

Chris Wallace thinks he'll stay in.

If he does, then he'd better put this bimbo eruption front and centre in his cross hairs, and declare an all out assault. Odd that he'd still be campaigning, if he were gonna call it quits.

If he does fold his tent, then he'd best come clean and fully explain this latest relationship. Meekly bowing out, while still maintaining his innocence... would be the lamest exit possible.

That, or else he'll hang in there until January to get the "matching funds", THEN bow out.

If you believe his candidacy is serious, you'd expect him to bow out. But he'll never "come clean", that's not like him. People generally stay true to type.

If you believe his candidacy has been a fraud from day one, expect him to stay in. Name recognition improves speaking fees, book sales, etc., and he may well be the kind of person who likes the limelght and people treating him as if he had two brain cells to rub together (which, in my opinion, is questionable). Hell, even Palin still gets SOME press, albeit not much since she dropped out.

When you think about his campaign, the idea that it wasn't serious from the start begins to add up. There's the Pokémon thing (ending the debate with a quote which is actually the lyrics from the Pokémon movie), the 9-9-9 thing (which is in Sim City), his "brother from another mother" (which is a line from Rush Hour, tho' that could be a cute colloquialism he used because people were familiar with it), and the "we need a leader, not a reader" from the Simpsons. (And yes, I know who first noticed all this, but I don't see Cain as smart enough to create an "art project"). Either he's too dumb to think up his own material (and, given he has virtually no staff or "machine", I assume he hasn't got any speech writers, or at least any GOOD ones), or he just pulled up a lot of references because he's mentally lazy--or hasn't got may thoughts of his own, I dunno.

But while I grant HE may think it's a serious candidacy. I don't think it ever was one. His cheerful ignorance of SO many things makes him a joke whether he realizes it or not. Several pundits have mentioned that they don't think it has been a serious candidacy from the start, for various reasons, and the more he talks, the more I don't think so either. Especially with the example of Palin out there for anyone to see as an opportunity to up their speaking fees, etc., by getting in the limelight for a while. It wouldn't be the first time...

Any real candidate with a lick of sense WOULD bow out by now. So either he's in it for some other reason, or he has no sense at all...either of which is certainly possible, given the way he's behaved.

Niki - it was a simple question, and yet you felt compelled to write a column to express your opinion on the matter.

I know you think the ideals for which Cain is promoting, smaller govt / more fiscal responsibility. are the stuff of fantasy, but you thinking that doesn't in the least mean that his candidacy isn't " legit ".

Cain lost his bid for US Senate to former GA congressman Johnny Isakson , back in 2004, coming in 2nd in the GOP primaries.

In Feb of 2006, he was told he had stage 4 colon cancer. The odds of survival are pretty slim, and yet Cain's still here, cancer free. I'd have to think, upon beating cancer, he figured he had a 2nd shot at life, and used that perspective to make the most of what he was given.

The heartless cynicism and triviality at which you dismiss this man's life and his politics, is nothing short of pathetic.

Sigh...okay, I'll bite this once. I never said a word about his stance of smaller government/fiscal responsibility--which by the way is the stance of every other candidate running. Nor did I say a thing about his life, merely that I think his candidacy was never serious. And yes, I do think his bid for the Presidency is trivial. At least, tho' I dislike her immensely, I believe Bachmann has been serious from the get-go, and the same for all the others. But Palin and Cain? I don't believe theirs were ever serious bids for the Presidency. My opinion, and I'm free to voice it.

Cain's candidacy isn't " trivial". He was at the top in some polls, and climbing in all others, before this well timed barrage of accusations hit.

Ron Paul, who may see double digits in his polling #'s on a great day, that's a " trivial" campaign.

He's out, so his campaign was trivial in the end.

What the hell does 'suspended' even mean?

The word is Q-U-I-T. Just say it, you'll be the a better man for it, in the long run.
