Hilary Rosen: No apology

By MAGGIE HABERMAN | 4/12/12 9:46 AM EDT
Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen just took to CNN again, this time to defend herself over her controversial comments about Ann Romney never working "a day in her life."

Rosen insisted she wasn't attacking the choices of stay-at-home moms, and suggested the Romney campaign was slamming her to take focus off the candidate's record - in an appearance in which she offered no apology, as President Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina had called for.

"This really isn't about stay at home moms versus working moms," she said. "It's about women in general. I love stay at home moms..."

She added, "I have kids. Being a mom is the hardest job in the world. I've said consistently...look Mitt Romney (has) bought his wife into this conversation. This is not about Ann Romney...this is about the waitress" elsewhere in America with two kids can afford to have care for her kids while she works.

"This isn't about whether Ann Romney, or I or other women of some means can afford to make a choice and stay home and raise kids," Rosen said. "Most women...don't have that choice. and that's the piece that I'm not hearing from the Romney campaign."

As for making Ann Romney a piece of the campaign, Rosen said, "He's the one who keeps doing this, not me."

Quote:

Less than 24 hours after Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen mocked Ann Romney for having "never worked a day in her life," Rosen apologized to Romney this afternoon for her "poorly chosen" words and aimed to "put the faux 'war against stay at home moms' to rest once and for all."

"I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended," Rosen said in a statement. "Let's declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance."

Former first lady Barbara Bush commended her apology, echoing Rosen's plea and saying people should "forget it."

"Life is good," Bush said on Fox News today. "Women who stay home are wonderful, women who go to work are wonderful. Whatever."

Bush, who worked at home raising seven children, one of whom would go on to become the 43rd president, said she was lucky to have had the luxury of staying home.

"I was lucky my husband worked very, very hard," Bush said. "I realize that was a luxury and Ann does, too. She's a very good friend of mine."

The former first lady added, "I'm not critical of Hilary but I'm just sorry she took a knock at those of us who chose and who were able -- and that's very important able -- to stay home."

As the general election revs into full force, women's issues and the "war on women" have taken center stage, with President Obama aiming to maintain his substantial lead among women voters and Mitt Romney striving to rekindle support with the all-important female voting bloc.

But Rosen's remarks Tuesday pushed policy prescriptions to the back seat as leaders of both parties focused squarely on her personal attack.

While Rosen sought to refocus the debate on whether Romney has "a vision for bringing women up economically," she did not back off her comments this morning.

"This is not about Ann Romney, this is about the waitress in a diner in some place in Nevada who has two kids whose day care funding is being cut off because of the Romney-Ryan budget and she doesn't know what to do," Rosen said on CNN. "This isn't about whether Ann Romney or I work, other women of some means can afford to make a choice to stay at home and raise kids. Most women in America, let's face it, don't have that choice."

Ann Romney hit back an hour later, telling Fox that her "career choice was to be a mother." She said that whether women chose to work or to stay home and raise children, "we have to respect women in all those choices."

"Mitt respects women that make those different choices," said Romney, who'll be 63 Monday.

About a quarter of U.S. women made the same choice as Ann Romney to make "mother" their job title in 2010. According to the most recent Census data, 23 percent of married women with children younger than 15 were stay-at-home moms.

HA! Yeah, a comment about a single woman is much worse that the many attacks the GOP has made against women, lately. This, from the guy who accuses others of distracting from "real" issues...

Oh, Rappy, you just can never stop with the funny.

Rosen wasn't talking about " a single woman " , moron. She was talking about ALL women who choose to live their life they way they want to.

There have been no attacks by the GOP on women.

None of that was brought up by the GOP. You're flat out lying, straight up. Of course, the LEFT phonied up a 'war on woman' campaign, because the economy is sucking and they needed a distraction. Which is funny as hell, because now, after the Hilary Rosen gaff, the Dems are saying " 'War on women ?'. We never said that... that was the GOP who started it! "

Democrats Now Say They Never Said ‘War Against Women’?

Quote:

If you went to bed oblivious of the news last night, there was a mini-bruhaha over a comment Hilary Rosen, the former head of the RIAA and a DNC Advisor, made to Anderson Cooper on AC360 last night. I was on AC360 with both Hilary and Paul Begala.

Hillary said that Ann Romney, a mother of five sons who has had breast cancer and MS, had “actually never worked a day in her life.” Ann Romney made her debut on twitter to take issue with the remark. The White House and Obama campaign were quick to distance themselves and say Hilary should offer an apology.

For what it’s worth, in context Hilary was talking about the workforce and recession and I don’t think she meant to insult stay at home moms or Mrs. Romney. On Twitter, Hilary explained she was taking issue with Mitt Romney using Ann Romney as his expert on women and Ann Romney did not work both a full time job and raise the five boys concurrently.

But more than that, I actually never even heard her make the remark originally because I was still dwelling on how Hilary had started her statement. Hilary said the Democrats had actually never used the phrase “War on Women,” and that it was a Republican invention. I turned on twitter and saw all the outrage and literally said out loud, “How’d I miss that?”

Saying the Democrats had never coined the “war on women” terminology threw me for a loop.

As the other statement about Mrs. Romney was being made, I was replaying in my mind where I’d heard the “war on women” rhetoric. Turns out the Democrats started it all the way back in February of 2011 and even Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Chair of the DNC and a congresswoman has gone all in with the rhetoric.

Hilary saying the Democrats hadn’t started it threw me for a loop because I’d played on my radio show DNC Chair and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Meet the Press from March 4, 2012. From the transcript:

MR. GREGORY: Nice to have you here in studio. So let me ask you about this issue of contraception and this fight over social issues. Just as I’ve asked your–the two other guests I’ve had this morning, can you appreciate where they’re coming from, which is–this is not a war on women, which they say is a vast overstatement, or about access to contraception, but this is about religious liberty that started with the president’s new regulation about faith institutions and access and who pays for contraception.

REP. SCHULTZ: Well, if it’s not a war on women, then let’s just look at what happened this week in contraception. First, you had the Blunt-Rubio bill that was on the floor in the United States Senate that wouldn’t just deal with making sure that women couldn’t have access to contraception, it would actually say that any boss could use their own moral conviction to decide what access to health care their employees could have, making sure that women would have to have their own access to health care, whether it’s to mammograms or contraception or to amniocenteses or any other type of health care access, decided by their boss. And that was defeated in the Senate. So the Republicans actually want to go much further than just saying women shouldn’t have access to, to contraception. They want to say that bosses should be able to decide what kind of access to health care women can have.

On Political Capital with Al Hunt on April 6, 2012, there was this exchange with the Democratic Congresswoman and DNC Chair:

HUNT: You have charged that the Republicans are waging a war on women. They say that is nonsense. The gender gap issue will disappear as we get closer, at least it will erode as we get closer to the election. And that the Democrats, in fact, have a Catholic problem.

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: Well, it is clear in this country that the jury of women across America have ruled, that the Republicans have been unbelievably extreme and out of touch and hyper-focused on cultural issues.

I mean while we are supposed to be focusing, and should be, as President Obama has been, focused on getting the economy turned around and continuing to move us forward and create jobs, their side is obsessed with cultural issues.

Note that she does not deny using the phrase.

Likewise, there was Debbie Wasserman Schultz on CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley just this past weekend pressed on whether or not there really was a “War on Women.”

“The focus of the Republican Party on turning back the clock for women really is something that’s unacceptable and shows how callous and insensitive they are towards women’s priorities,” she said. That’s not exactly a denial.

At the same time, liberal Talking Points Memo from just yesterday characterizes the “war on women” this way:

Mitt Romney has tried to turn Democrats’ claim of a “war on women” by the GOP against them this week, accusing President Obama of waging his own “war on women.” Slower job growth for female workers, Romney insists, is evidence of Obama’s war.

On just about every MSNBC show — official press organ of the Democratic Party — the hosts routinely use the phrase to characterize the GOP. For the past two weeks, it has been a consistent theme on the show. Given how MSNBC doesn’t actually read news, but DNC talking points, it’s a stretch to say the Democrats aren’t behind it.

MoveOn.org sent out a letter on February 19, 2011 (yes, that long ago) accusing the GOP of a “war on women” writing

Dear MoveOn member,

It might seem hyperbolic to say that Republicans have declared a war on women.

Sadly, it’s not.

On March 25, 2011, NARAL Pro-Choice America, EMILYs List, and MoveOn.org started a “Stop the War on Women” campaign.

The list goes on.

It is the Democratic National Committee Chairwoman, Democratic Party mouthpieces, and outside groups pushing the Democrats’ agenda that have all said the GOP is at war against women.

To now deny that the Democrats came up with the term and to say the GOP did it is not just unfair, it is factually wrong. But my guess is that this is an admission that the “war on women” approach isn’t working well for the Democrats.

In fact, we can verify that.

Just last week, Gallup released a new poll with this finding:

Eight in 10 independent women in the swing states said they were not familiar with Romney’s position on contraception, but those who were familiar disagreed with it by a 2-to-1 ratio. Independent women were more likely to have an opinion about Obama’s views on contraception (58% were unfamiliar), and were divided about evenly between saying they agree or disagree with them.

Two things stick out like a sore thumb to me on this. First, 80% of independent women in swing states have no idea what Romney’s position is on contraception despite all the Democrats’ rhetoric. Second, of those who know about Obama’s position, they are split roughly 50-50 on liking his position. That doesn’t seem like it’ll be a problem for Mitt Romney.

How about one with tangible evidence.

Lets start with specifics: In Obama's White House women make on average 18% less then men. Obama has barred women from his Golf outings.

How about a more general viewpoint: High unemployment means fewer women have jobs. High taxes mean working women pay more. Forced health care forces women to buy a govt health plan that they would not otherwise choose to buy. Housing and economic turmoil force women to remain in abusive relationships because they cannot afford to get divorced. High unemployment means more domestic violence. Women are forced to pay for govt programs that are contrary to their religeous beliefs. Women in unions are forced to make contributions that do not reflect their political beliefs. Women are forced to subsidize the development of green technology. Etc.

That being so "tangible", Im sure you can cite it, right? Im looking for Obama barring women from Golf, and all I come across is many articles about him insisting his club lift the ban on women.

The point about unemployemnmt is a hell of a reach, even for you. Like its being done deliberately to attack women. Not even you are that stupid.

But I do like how you avoid those actual attacks on women the GOP has made lately. You make it too easy to dismiss you.

Lets also look at the phrasing of the thread topic - an attack on "Real" women. So, in Rappyland, only stay-at-home Moms are "real" women. No, she did because she was sorry for the way her comments came out. You would get that if you were not inflicted with the stupid.

You would also get that I have addressed each of you claims while insulting you. Unlike you I can do two things at once.

None of that was brought up by the GOP. You're flat out lying, straight up.

Bullshit. Every single one of those measures that became law were introduced, authored, sponsored, and passed by GOP majorities. Vaginal probes that amount to state-sanctioned rape, doctors being legally allowed to lie to women in order to trick them out of having an abortion procedure, and the recent rollback of equal pay for women in the workplace in Wisconsin, all bought and paid for by the GOP.

And all this, after you've made such a big show of telling everyone else how they over-use the word "lying" - and then you claim that Story is "flat out lying, straight up", when of course it's you who's doing the lying about this.

Anyone remember Clayton Williams, who said of rape that "you might as well lie back and enjoy it"? Yeah, that guy was running for Texas Governor when he said that. And the GOP of course loved him for it.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Came here to close down my internet and go have dinner; saw this title and guffawed; not going to read anything because I know what it is.

BUT, this whole thing is such a piece of ridiculous political gamesmanship I can't BELIEVE it! Everyone with half a brain knows what Rosen said AND what she meant; that Romney's wife had never had to juggle a JOB and raising children! Of course raising children is a helluva lot of WORK, she never meant to say otherwise. But by gawd, the repubs jumped all over it, the dems threw her under the bus, and everyone involved knows what the facts actually are, but ooooo, nobody's gonna SAY IT!

On the other hand, Wisconsin just dumped the equal-pay law...that's something REAL in the war on women. But don't pay that any attention, it's obviously not important...

Sometimes politics is just too damned funny for words. Must not be much else going on today for them to make such a big deal out of this...but then both sides have become so absurd and ridiculous of late, I guess it should be expected. Nonetheless, it's asinine. Rosen was talking about the women who don't have the CHOICE to be stay-at-home moms, who have to juggle a full-time job as well as being a mom, and even THEN don't know if they'll make it from day to day. Romney's wife has absolutely NO idea what that's like, and that's the truth.

Aside from that, it's totally irrelevant, Rosen should have kept her mouth shut. The ONLY women Romney's wife will ever get to talk to are Republican women, and of course ALL Republicans insist there's no "war on women", so....
So snark away, smack each other on the head with irrelevancies, which I'm guessing you're already doing, but don't pretend to me that ANYONE doesn't understand what's going on completely.

Ridiculous.

Oh, by the way, North Korea's dreaded missle went fzzzzzz...

Being a 'stay at home' mum is something of a status symbol here now. It means, get this dearies, that your hubby can earn enough to keep you at home with the kiddies. It's seen as desirable amongst some circles, as being so allegedly beneficial for kids and probably it is better to not have both parents working full time when when they are little, but most people don't have choices in this area, they are trying to pay the bills.

There is always so much judgement on women. If you have kids and work, you are selfish and clearly an overly ambitious power bitch. If you have kids and don't work, you are a ambitionless door mat. If you don't have kids, you are barren and/or too selfish. You can't win.

There does seem to be a return to much more conservative values where 'stay at home' is considered desirable. I didn't do it, but I don't work full time and my hubby has had a lot of flexibity with his work, otherwise it would have been very difficult. I didn't want and don't want to be at home all the time. I like having a career, and it seems odd to me that so many educated women seem content to let their husbands have a career, but its their lives. Meh!

I guess the only way WHOZIT gets to see a woman enjoying sex would be on a porn site. That would apply to Rush as well, I certainly imagine.

The conservative Catholic League has now attacked Hilary Rosen and adoption. Here's what they tweeted about Rosen:

"Lesbian Dem Hilary Rosen tells Ann Romney she never worked a day in her life. Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own."

This is nasty rhetoric. All of it, frankly. It was clear Rosen was hitting at Romney's wife because Mitt said that she relayed 'economic concerns of women' to him. It is clear Rosen's comments were about Ann Romney not being on a par with Mrs Average, because she has had the luxury of being able to have the choice to stay at home. There is no doubt her words were ill chosen, but it is all a storm in a tea cup. Hardly extremist or hate filled or a war of any kind.

And as for REAL women. WTF?

Oh it's just another disgusting example of false equivalency from the boys who pretend to detest same. A flood of anti-woman legislation across this country, putting back women's rights decades, is all balanced by one legislator insulting a Presidential candidate's wife. Yeah, right.

Come to think of it, the way the right values human life, one Republican candidate's wife is prolly about equal to all the politically left women in the whole country. So it's not really false equivalency from their point of view at all.

It's pathetic and, sorry, this ain't 2004. It ain't gonna work.

I agree, the Democrats continue their war on mothers by fostering a poor economy that forces women (and some men) to work when they might otherwise choose to stay at home to raise their kids.

Just another example of Democrats taking away a woman's right to choose. Its one thing to choose career over family, its another to be forced to take a job or several jobs to make ends meet because President Obama is making things so much worse for everyone.

Not weighing in on who's to blame for the state of the economy, but that is a rather less targeted and intentional "effort" aimed specifically at women, isn't it? Everyone who depends on work to is worse off.

Denying women control over their own bodies and valuing the unborn life equally or more than the person it inhabits... that's specifically targeted at women only and highly intentional based on some of the legislation that has been passed.

I don't think that's a valid comparison, basically.

I'm only watching this from afar but it's scary. The very idea that doctor's get the legal right to lie to their patients... It's a nightmare scenario, yet a substantial number of people seem to consider this alright. It boggles the mind.
