Quote:The Anoka-Hennepin School District pledged Monday to improve the treatment of gay and lesbian students as part of a settlement that closes a long legal chapter in its struggles over bullying and sexual orientation. The 5-1 school board vote, which resolves both a federal civil rights investigation and a lawsuit filed last summer by six former and current students, was received with cheers and hugs among plaintiffs and their supporters. The suit had said the district did not adequately respond to persistent physical and verbal harassment based on real or perceived sexual orientation. The settlement creates a five-year partnership between the school district and the federal departments of Justice and Education to help create programs and procedures to improve the school climate for all students.

This WH is fully on board w/ that program, with videos being submitted by Obama, Biden, H.Clinton, and a long list of those in the admin. Striving to stop bullying is a noble thing. However, not just gays are bullied. But from how this administration pushes that agenda, as it seems that's what they're speaking out against the most, it's as if bullied gay and lesbian kids come first, others ...well, they'll get back to you later. Which is all well and good, but for Savage to launch into this hissy fit over Christians, and then calling them 'pansies', for not putting up w/ his b.s., is the height of hypocrisy, and completely counter to his alleged 'anti-bullying' program. Even as an atheist, this clip makes clear that Savage is more interested in mocking and ridiculing anyone who believes the bible, on any level. Beyond disgraceful.

Well for one thing, I'm not entirely sure of the makeup of the audience, and the fact that it sounded like a good portion of the audience was pretty much in agreement... What I take issue with more than anything was his confrontational attitude in front of a mixed audience, he let anger cloud what could have been a rational discussion... Also cussing like that in front of the kids- NOT COOL!

Quote:Originally posted by HKCavalier: Hey all, Well shoot, I guess I gotta come on out and say it: I’m perfectly fine with what Dan Savage said to these high schoolers, including using the phrase "bullshit in the Bible" several times. What high schoolers need from adults is emotional honesty and rational discourse, and Dan Savage modeled both in his presentation. It is not irrational simply to call out the Bible on its various insanities or to express anger at the way the Good Book has been used to justify violence and oppression. There is bullshit in the Bible. Everyone knows it and everyone ignores their own version of it. It’s a hallowed American tradition going back at least to Thomas Jefferson who took all of what he considered the Bible’s bullshit out and printed it as “The Jefferson Bible.” The Bible did get slavery wrong (as did much of the human race for millennia) and it did get human sexuality wrong (ditto). The truth hurts, but it’s not bullying. I gotta say I'm kinda shocked at how prissy some folk here are about "how to talk to teenagers." Really, "bullshit" is off the table for teenagers? Anger is off the table? Most of the teenagers I know are pretty angry people and use any word they feel like. Are y’all familiar with Dan Savage? He is invited to speak to teenagers and college students on a regular basis and he always talks like this. As Stephen Colbert would say: the market has spoken! And since we’re here, I didn’t think he was trying to be remotely sincere with that apology. He was being HIGHLY ironic, considering the actual beatings and murders that are the subject of his talk. His “beating up the Bible” was merely rhetoric. Does anyone here really think he was saying what he did about slavery and anti-gay bullying to intimidate the good Christians in the audience? Because that would be the only justification you could have for saying he was “bullying” anyone. The irony I see is that it’s Muslims who are notorious for acting like criticism of their holy book is an act of violence against their person. Now, AURaptor is supporting such posturing when it’s in reference to the Christian Bible. Irony. And finally, when you look at these kids as they walk past the camera and presumably out of the auditorium in high dudgeon, only a few seem to feel obliged to show outrage. The rest are just walking and talking with their friends like it’s a fire drill. I strongly suspect that the boys and girls who walked out on a Dan Savage speech had planned to do so because they knew damn well what to expect. Ah, politics! Anyway. Carry on. HKCavalier

Quote: On HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher July 15, 2011, during a panel discussion of the debt limit increase negotiations between the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama, Savage said in a stand-alone remark, "I wish the Republicans were all fucking dead. "

Gay people in this country are still second class citizens in many contexts, particularly in terms of being bullied and beaten to death on the strength of their sexual identities alone. So, the main purpose of Dan Savage getting up in front of any group to discuss gay bashing is for him to be a gay man speaking openly about gay bashing. Because that’s his right and in America we recognize people’s rights. We are at a point in our history that exposure is most important. So, these kids were exposed to Dan Savage's ideas. Unedited, and undiluted. And now, thanks to youtube, the whole world has heard him. And placing the responsibility on Savage to in effect "win these kids over" politicizes his speech in a way that constrains him from expressing ideas too "harshly" or too "emphatically" because such is likely to "upset" these innocent, bigoted children. Mustn't trouble the children with the ugly truth about being gay in this country and the CENTRAL role the Bible has played in the oppression of gays in this country. So, to say that Dan Savage has failed as a speaker because people walked out on him is to pretend that bigotry had nothing to do with it. It is to say all these kids walked out solely because he was saying “mean things” about their holy book and no child should be subjected to such rudeness, no matter what the reason. It says that because Dan used a naughty word, these kids have no responsibility as citizens in good conscience to hear the gay man out. Fuck him if he can’t play nice. And, indeed, that’s what our nation has done to gay people time and again. Step out of line and we will step on you. He broke the rules in a game that was slanted against him from the get go.
