"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

The Republican National Committee (RNC) used a call center based in the Philippines to hold a media conference attacking President Obama's economic record, the Chicago Sun-Times reported today. The RNC didn't help its image by pointing out that the call was run by Verizon.

Companies like Verizon that have shipped call center operations overseas have contributed to the devastation of the U.S. based call center industry. While the industry still comprises approximately 3 percent of the overall U.S. workforce, the industry lost more than 500,000 jobs between 2006 and 2010, largely because of the off-shoring trend. This continued trend depresses our economic recovery.

Noting that working families today are protesting Verizon's greed at its shareholders' meeting in Alabama, CWA Chief of Staff Ron Collins, who began his career in a Maryland-based Verizon call center, summed up RNC's move this way:

"It’s hard to imagine anything more hypocritical than the RNC making calls about U.S. unemployment from a Verizon foreign call center."

Hat tip to the Communications Workers of America (CWA) for spotting this.

Or Republicans talking about protecting democracy by disenfranchising as many voters as possible...

Not sure about that. Per data in Niki's thread "Democrats have a registration problem", the Republicans are potentially losing more registered voters than the Democrats. For some reason, Niki and the author of the article she cited seem to think that this is a bad thing.

And for some reason, you seem to think it's a good thing to disenfranchise people.

Nothing hypocritical about this, imo. I believe in tight gun control in a society. But if I moved to live in the US, and a very rough neighbourhood, I wouldn't refuse to countenance getting a weapon to protect myself. One can play by the rules, while at the same time wishing that the rules were different.

It's not personal. It's just war.

You're absolutely right of course - but the GOP have become such evil shitheads lately, that they have to grasp at anything.

So was the car Romney's tooling around in in his commercials. And his wife's "couple of Cadillacs", most likely. And I'd wager Romney's buses are all foreign-made as well.

When have I said that?

I do think the voter ID laws themselves will have little effect on election turnout, and will likely be more useful to both parties as fodder for political ads and blogs than for the number of voters added or subtracted.

You can tell the Democrats are gonna be on this by stuff like the article Niki cited, where they complain about a reduction in registered Hispanic and Black voters, and hope no one notices the greater reduction in White registrations, which is more likely to hurt the Republicans.
