"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I'm in the market for an e-reader, and feedback would be appreciated. I have some eye issues that are lingering effects of a chronic iritis that plagued me for several years, so reading paperbacks is physically challenging for me - it results in migraines and blurred vision.

I've been playing around with the Kindle app on my MacBook and on my wife's iPad, and I like the functionality of it. I can buy another iPad, but I'm looking quite seriously at the Kindle Fire. Anyone here have experience with it?

What's drawing me to the Fire is the Kindle Users Lending Library, which allows you free access to up to a book a month, free - and they've got a pretty wide selection, including quite a few books I actually want to read. You have to have the Amazon Prime membership to get the free books, but I've already got that; I tend to use it for the free shipping and streaming video services, but the free books are just one more thing to like about it.

I like that there's no commitment with the Kindle - if I cancel Prime, then I still have access to books; I just have to pay for them. I'm leery of the Barnes & Noble Nook, because I don't have any confidence that B&N will be around in another two years or less; I'm fairly sure Amazon will be with us for a while.

I like the iPad and the way it ties in with my other Apple devices, but the Kindle books are ONLY free for Kindle devices; they will not work with the Kindle app for iPad, Mac, or iPhone.

But after playing around with them a bit and buying a couple books, I'm convinced that I *can* enjoy reading for fun again - it's just going to be from a screen, with adjustable brightness and adjustable font sizes! At the moment, I'm reading "The Hunger Games" and re-reading Bram Stoker's "Dracula". I've got a rather extensive Wish List set aside on Amazon of other books that are in my queue, including the Ender's Game series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and some others. And it will be nice to have all my magazine subscriptions in a digital format as well.

So what are your e-reader experiences? What do you love and hate about such devices?

It's been a bit of a challenge, getting used to reading books from a tablet, but it's much easier than trying to read in bed from a laptop!
