Hello,

It is shameful to see the way these immigrants- humans striving for a better life- are treated when they make the difficult trek across the border. I wish there could be more compassion for those struggling to make it in life. I really do not see immigration as a serious problem, particularly if the immigrants are allowed to integrate into the economy. We could learn a lot from the despair of these immigrants and make ourselves a beacon of hope again to the world's huddled masses, striving to be free. We could be the shining example of a better way.

Well said, Anthony. As an immigrant myself, it saddens me to no end.

In good times, xenophobia is always in the backdrop. In hard times, like now, xenophobia absolutely thrives.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

First of all, the USA should have stopped a century ago propping up the "banana republics", latifundia, and military dictatorships which provided such a fertile ground for so many of our corporations. We should kill NAFTA (and CAFTA) which has done more to impoverish indigenous farmers than any number of military governments ever did.

Once we stop effing meddling in other peoples' nations, then we can stop being so "kind-hearted" about taking in the poor that we ourselves created. We (the USA) cannot solve our own internal problems if we are busy incorporating any number of people who don't share the same language, culture. education, and expectations. Even in the most kind-hearted and efficient of systems (which we don't have) we would have a huge difficulty bringing a large group of people up to speed. As it is, we don't even WANT to manage that with our own underclass ("poor white trash" who are only one generation from the manual manufacturing jobs that no longer exist, and blacks who are underemployed in ALL economic situations).

The only purpose of tolerating and encouraging an underclass is for corporate profits. People are not pigeons that we can toss a few breadcrumbs towards and feel better about ourselves for our "charity".

I do not agree that immigrants are an underclass. Many immigrants are highly motivated, industrious workers as well as highly educated and skilled. They are an asset to American society, not a class of people to be tolerated out of charity.

I share a noninterventionist view of foreign lands, such that I decry interference in them. I do not think the AFTAs have added to the prosperity of the American people. I do not know what it has done for foreign people.

The US is no doubt responsible for some of the problems in the world. I do not know that we are responsible for all the poverty and inequity of the world, nor that people would stop desiring to come here once we implement a noninterventionist policy.

I think we can. Immigrants are not the huge depressing force on our nation that they've been made out to be.

I do not believe our failure in these quarters is immigrant related, nor that we are being held back by an immigrant problem.

I'm not sure what you're going for with the breadcrumb thing. It is by making immigration so difficult, hence encouraging an illegal and exploitable undocumented worker class, that we are creating problems for people who come here with hope in their hearts.
