"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Mittens kind of lost his mind (again) in Israel, coming out in praise of their universal healthcare system, which is paid for with - GASP! - a progressive tax system!

http://freakoutnation.com/2012/07/30/romney-praises-israels-universal-
health-care-system-funded-by-a-progressive-health-tax
/

“Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the G.D.P. in Israel? Eight percent,” he said. “You spend eight percent of G.D.P. on health care. You’re a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18 percent of our G.D.P. on health care, 10 percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military — our military which is 4 percent, 4 percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of G.D.P. We have to find ways — not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to fund and manage our health care costs.”

Only one problem with that:

Quote:

In 1995 the National Health Insurance Law came into effect, which made membership in one of the four existing Health Maintenance Organizations compulsory for all Israeli citizens. The law determined a uniform benefits package (?? ??????) for all citizens – a list of medical services and treatments which each of the Health Maintenance Organizations is required to fund for its members. Additionally, certain services were brought under the direct administration of the State, usually by means of the Health Ministry. In addition, the law set out a system of public funding for health care services by means of a progressive health tax, administered by Bituah Leumi, Israel’s social security organization, which transfers funding to the Health Maintenance Organizations according to a certain formula based on the number of members in each fund, the age distribution of members, and a number of other indices. The Health Maintenance Organizations also receive direct financing from the state's money.

I know; isn't it hysterical? Not just the gaffes on Romney's part, but how everyone is TAKING them! The media is eating it up, heads of state are snarling and being offended--omygawd, WAIT! I get it! It's a vast liberal conspiracy, they're putting words in his mouth and they've colluded with world governments to make him look just as undiplomatic and stupid as they all can! NOW I get it!

Uh, you missed the most recent one:
Quote:

At a breakfast fund-raising event in Jerusalem Monday, Romney said he couldn’t help but notice the “dramatically stark difference in economic vitality” between Israel and “the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority,” and he concluded, “Culture makes all the difference.”

No mention from the would-be US president of the trade and mobility restrictions that Israel maintains over the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza – restrictions that both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have said for years are key factors in hampering Palestinian economic growth.

Palestinian leaders quickly blasted Romney’s “culture” comment as “racist” and added that he failed to take into account the impact of Israel’s tight grip on the Palestinian economy.

Yet while Romney did not seem interested in answering Palestinian critics, he did seem focused on reaching not just US Jewish voters but also Christian conservatives whose support for the Mormon former Massachusetts governor has been lukewarm.

In his speech, Romney sounded almost Biblical when he said that he recognized the “power” of “a few other things” besides just culture in Israel’s accomplishments, adding that he also saw the “hand of providence in selecting this place.

He said, by the way, that Israel's economy was three times that of Palestine's...it's not, it's TEN times.
Quote:

A prominent Palestinian leader called out one of Romney's statements in Jerusalem "racist."

Palestinian negotiator Sa'eb Erekat said Romney's "racist statements about the Israeli culture being superior to the Palestinian culture reflect someone who needs to be educated, who needs knowledge."

I heard a pundit an hour or so ago who said it should be called his "Moonwalking tour" 'cuz he's going backwards faster than he's going forward. I actually feel sorry for him. Seriously...it's not his fault he's completely isolated from the world of those not ultra-rich, and his team is failing him badly.

Okay, so I can find it hysterical and feel sorry for him at the same time; sue me.

Yup; his team's not doing him any favors either:
Quote:

The traveling press secretary for Mitt Romney lost his cool and cursed at reporters who attempted to ask questions of the Republican presidential candidate in a public plaza near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw Tuesday.

After Romney paid his respects to Poland's war dead and shook hands with a small gathering of the nation's military veterans, the GOP contender walked approximately 100 yards away from the memorial as he chatted with Warsaw's mayor.

As Romney made his way to his vehicle, reporters attempted to shout questions to the candidate. The former Massachusetts governor, who has answered only three questions from his traveling press corps during a week-long overseas trip, ignored the queries. Romney did sit down for multiple interviews during his foreign swing, including with CNN's Piers Morgan and Wolf Blitzer. Romney also spoke with NBC News, CBS News, ABC News and Fox News during his trip.

When members of the press tried to ask Romney about some of the mishaps on his trip, his traveling press secretary Rick Gorka verbally dressed down reporters.

Here's a transcript of the questions and Gorka's response:

CNN: "Governor Romney are you concerned about some of the mishaps of your trip?

NYT: "Governor Romney do you have a statement for the Palestinians?

Washington Post: "What about your gaffes?

NYT: "Governor Romney do you feel that your gaffes have overshadowed your foreign trip?"

CNN: "Governor Romney just a few questions sir, you haven't taken but three questions on this trip from the press!

Gorka: "Show some respect"

NYT: "We haven't had another chance to ask a question..."

Gorka: "Kiss my ass. This is a Holy site for the Polish people. Show some respect."

Moments later, Gorka told Jonathan Martin, a reporter for Politico, to "shove it." About a half-hour later, the aide called reporters to apologize.

Gorka's comments to the media came just hours before Romney's foreign policy speech in Warsaw.

Aides to the GOP candidate say Romney visited Poland to highlight the nation's growing economy and honor its contributions to the war in Afghanistan. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/31/romney-aide-loses-cool

Why can't they answer a simple question?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Some of these errors are so profound and so easy to avoid (a High-Schooler with a laptop might help. Before praising a health care system, let's look it up!) that it's hard to believe that he and his campaign could possibly be so staggeringly incompetent. I hope that if he wins the presidency, he acquires a more capable support staff.

There is nothing he can do to shake off the support of his party, but he may be sacrificing independent voters with these missteps.

Paul Krugman's take on Romney's praise of Israel's health service:

Quote:

"Romney’s remarks here fit the classic Kinsley definition of a gaffe: it’s when a politician accidentally tells the truth. The truth in this case is that America’s uniquely privatized system is also uniquely expensive and inefficient; health care is one area in which the public sector does it better than the private sector, and in which free-market doctrine is just a dangerous fantasy."

Ron Paul supporters in Poland? There's a really bad Polish joke in here some where.

Q; How many Polish Ron Paul supporters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A; Who the fuck is Ron Paul?

She's the gift that keeps on giving, isn't she?

Maybe Romney will pick her as his running mate. It's about the only way he'll look like the smart one on the ticket!

I know, right?

I wonder if they were serving ham at that dinner...

Meanwhile, Romney's spokesman is yelling "Shove it!" and "Kiss my ass!" in the same conversation where he tells others to "show some respect." Awesomeness. "Irony" and "Romney" share an awful lot of common letters!

It's pretty funny, alright...every one of the only three places he chose to visit (done specifically to avoid any place which might have any chance of being controversial in any way), there's a screw up. I hadn't heard about the dinner yet; I find that particularly amusing. He managed to do SOMETHING at every stop to make himself look arrogant and/or ignorant.

The part I DON'T like about it, however, is that the media is so focused on these, we've heard little or nothing about the speeches he gave (except the gaffe parts). I don't find that fair or reasonable reporting and I decry it. It's bad journalism.

I DO find that him only answering THREE of the reporters' questions during the entire trip reprehensible and admittedly it would make them focus on gaffes rather than speeches, in retaliation. He hauled the media on the trip with him (the cost of which had to be paid by their newspapers, etc.) then left them virtually nothing to do but cover photo ops and report on his expected "triumphs". It's all of a piece with his refusal to respond to questions here at home, and reprehensible in a political candidate, in my opinion. It's no wonder they shouted questions at him; what were their options?

The dinner thing IS hilarious, admittedly, and the health care thing yet another one of his ignorant gaffes.

It is absolutely astonishing that this man is considered a viable candidate to run a whole country!

As to Palin, ach, she'd old news as far as I'm concerned, and I just lump her in the same category as Bachmann and Limbaugh. A show pony who makes outrageous statements the fringes adore, nothing more. She's not even worth paying attention to any more, and her need to stay in the spotlight is lamentable (and applies to the other two as well).

See, the politicians decided that "access" was their trump card - play nice, or we don't invite you to the big show. Reporters play along, usually, so long as in return for their reporting they actually get some ACCESS.

So when #RomneyShambles drags them all over the globe on his avoiding-my-wife's-dancing-horse expedition, and then DOESN'T make himself available to the press, or answer questions...

... then yeah, they're going to report on the stuff they DO have about him.

Want them to give an honest report? Give them honest access.

Valid point. Humans react out of frustration, and I'm sure there was a LOT of frustration among the reporters. Three questions??? That's unheard of. They were sent there by their papers, etc., to report on what Romney said and did, AND ask questions of him--the job of journalists. If denied the ability to do all of that, I guess I'm not surprised they reported on the gaffes, and I shouldn't blame them.
