Were I Obama I'd be pretty pleased, as the guy's a pathetic douche with no charisma and the most transparently awful budget plans I've ever seen, I'd never tire of shooting that little fishy in that barrel. And my friend Joe would DEMOLISH his ass in debate. So, in the words of my favorite ex-President, "Bring it on!" :)

Too bad there isn't a VP pick that will make Romney not-a-mormon.

There, that works better!

I'd not be opposed to a Mormon president, I mean the Oath of Office binds them to Constitutional Compliance (for what that's worth in practice, usually jack shit), but I take umbrage at the notion of Romney actually being, yanno, a Mormon.
He can *SAY* so, he can pretend it - but outside of the whole creepy marriage thing Mormons as a whole are more inclined to respect the rights and personhood of youth, and value them as people, human beings.

NO Mormon worth the name would have EVER been involved in the abuse of youth for profit, and he's in that up to the neck, it'd be like an alcoholic Muslim or a Buddist practicing human sacrifice, so contradictory its very existence would boggle the mind - and much as I have my own issues with the Mormons and some of their conduct, I think it undeserved and inappropriate to tar them with the slimy brush of Romneys involvement with WWASPS/CEDU/AES, etc etc.

One *might* have noticed, had they been paying attention, that outside of the folks who think they might profit somehow from it, Romney don't have a lotta support from rank and file Mormons, especially given that they feel the backlash for his monstrous acts will spill over on them, and they have a point to fear that result.

I would no more call Romney a Mormon than I consider Fred Phelps a Christian, neh ?

Now MORON, that fits, oh boy does it EVER.

Playing the devils advocate here.... When you strip away all the bullshit, isn't the massive overspending of the government what got us into this mess in the first place?

It seems as if there is no good time to slash government spending. When times are good, nobody wants government spending to go down because it would effect their 401k. When times are bad and the 401k, housing market, employment rate and everything else is bad, nobody wants government spending to go down because who knows how much worse things will get.

Whatever arguments there are on either side, the cold hard truth is that our Government has been spending more than they take in every single year since before many of us here were even born. With how bad things are today, I don't see how this overspending has benefited any of us at all.

Isn't it kind of scary that we can actually visualize a day in the future where even if we were taxed 100% on our income, it would not even be able to pay the interest we owe as a nation?

Sure, that day is far off, but only a fool would believe that it will never happen and that government overspending can continue on its increasing pace forever.

As to Romney's choice of running mate, and why Ryan would be bad for him:
Quote:

First Paul Ryan, now Chris Christie. Conservative thought leaders are turning up the heat on Mitt Romney to go bold in his choice of running mate – and away from the “safe” choices of Rob Portman and Tim Pawlenty.

The call for Congressman Ryan of Wisconsin – the young Budget Committee chairman dubbed the intellectual leader of the GOP – has more backers, including The Wall Street Journal editorial page and top editors at The Weekly Standard. The chattering classes treat Governor Christie of New Jersey, floated for vice president by Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson, as a less serious possibility, given his blunt style, big persona, and short time in office.

But the larger point is this: The conventional wisdom that Mr. Romney will play it safe, and choose between Senator Portman of Ohio and former Governor Pawlenty, has sparked worry among some leading Republicans

Why? Just look at the polls. Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is clearly trailing President Obama, and conservatives are worried that loyal but bland understudies won’t help give Romney’s candidacy the juice it apparently needs. The most recent polls, CNN/Opinion Research and Fox News, have Obama up by seven and nine percentage points, respectively.

In their Weekly Standard piece, Stephen Hayes and William Kristol tackle the argument that “the Ryan budget” – a bold, controversial blueprint for spending cuts and entitlement reforms – makes the congressman a risky choice. Romney embraced the Ryan plan during the primaries, and will continue to campaign on it, they say, so why not have its author out there making the case himself?

“Having Paul Ryan on the ticket may well make it easier to defend the plan convincingly,” Messrs. Hayes and Kristol write. “Ryan's pretty good at that.”

The Wall Street Journal editorial argues that Americans are hungry for a leader willing to take on tough issues – and that the choice of Ryan would reinforce that message

The case for Christie may be a tougher sell for some conservatives. While Ryan has been in Congress since 1999, despite his tender age (early 40s), Christie has been governor for just 2-1/2 years and has no Washington experience to flesh out Romney’s own lack of Washington service. More potentially problematic is Christie’s penchant for dressing down voters in public. The clashes make for entertaining YouTube videos, and he is reasonably popular in his Democratic home state, but his Jersey style may not wear well day in and day out on the stump.

Mr. Gerson says that Christie’s combativeness, in fact, is exactly what Romney needs, in a campaign that has become a “vicious, negative slugfest.”

“Romney needs more than an appealing spokesman,” Gerson writes. “He needs someone to engage aggressively on his behalf in the daily D-Day this campaign has become. All four leading vice presidential prospects might play this role. Christie would clearly play it best.”

Christie is also rumored to be the likely convention keynote speaker, which would take him out of the running for veep.

In an interview with NBC on Thursday, Romney said he wants a running mate with “a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country.”

That, NBC’s Chuck Todd says, could point to Ryan.

Democrats, meanwhile, are salivating over Ryan as the veep choice. His plan to turn Medicare into a voucher-like system led to a memorable ad showing a Ryan look-alike pushing Grandma in her wheelchair off a cliff. That ad, and many more like it, would surely come back.

In addition, putting Ryan on the ticket would center the focus of the Romney campaign on the nation’s unsustainable fiscal path – to be sure, a concern of voters – and away from job creation and the economy, the No. 1 issue. Ryan’s youth could also give voters pause.

In the end, only one thing is certain: We’ll get the answer soon. The Republican convention starts in 17 days.In the end, only one thing is certain: We’ll get the answer soon. The Republican convention starts in 17 days.

Go for it, Mitt; take Ryan, and we'll have SUCH fun!

JONGSSTRAW

After Romney's spokesperson stuck her foot in her butt this week, his campaign is teetering on life support. Picking Ryan would be the final nail in Romney's election coffin. Republicans can't generate one scintilla of excitement for Romney, and Romney can't win the media war against Obama's surrogates. Although the Convention will surely be a hoot and a half, the campaign is living up to its' own self-destructive pre-destination.

Portman probably locks up Ohio for Romney; Ryan or Pawlenty don't even lock up their home states for him.

Rubio would be a great help in Florida AND with wooing Hispanic and Latino voters, but he brings a huge amount of financial baggage of his own, which is something Romney definitely does not need more focus on!

Nicki Haley might help with women, but probably not, especially after referring to rape and domestic abuse as "a distraction" after proposing funding cuts for those programs.

Romney's got to find someone who (a) helps him win one or more key swing states, or (b) helps him strip votes from some key demographics (women, Latino/Hispanic voters, elderly, Jewish voters, etc.), AND who doesn't outshine him; he needs someone who makes Romney look like the exciting one in the race.

At the same time, he needs a "bulldog" for the campaign, someone who can go out and say what the candidate himself cannot. Chris Christie would help in that regard, IF he's not too big a turn-off for Southerners.

Portman seems to fit most of the criteria.

Looks like Romney is going with Ryan after all. So in an effort to reach out to the middle class, Romney has decided that in addition to raising their taxes, he should also be known as the guy who agrees with killing Medicare and throwing the elderly under the bus so he can pay less in taxes. He just reached out to the middle class, but then he slapped them in the face and flipped them the bird with his VP choice.

How could that possibly go wrong?

MAL4PREZ

The decision's out in just over an hour. I'm guessing Portman, though kinda hoping for another Palin-like surprise to provide fodder for SNL, the Daily Show, and Colbert. Ryan would do. Not such a surprise as Palin was and less high up on the whacked-out meter, (few can equal Palin as far as nuttiness) but he's certainly fodder-like.

For those up early on a Saturday, there's a good discussion of Ryan on today's electoral-vote.com:

Quote:

News from the Votemaster
Romney To Announce Running Mate Today at 8:45 A.M.

Mitt Romney will announce his choice for Veep this morning at 8:45 A.M. at the USS Wisconsin in Virginia. Some soothsayers have taken the venue to mean that the choice will be Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). but none of them really know.

Red State, a tea party oriented Website that bitterly opposed Romney during the primaries has one of the best pieces around about the factors Romney should consider. These are as follows:

Identity politics: a woman would appeal to female voters, who form a majority
Race/ethnicity: a Latino would play well in Nevada, New Mexico, Florida, and Virginia
Religion: A Protestant would play well with the base whereas a Mormon/Catholic ticket might not
Class: Romney was born rich and became richer so someone born poor or middle class would help
Geography: A candidate from a swing state or region might be of some value
Age: Romney is an old guy. Someone much younger would make the ticket look less outdated
Ideology: Romney can't seem to shake the moderate label, so how about a fire-breathing conservative?
Experience: Romney knows nothing about foreign policy so having someone on board who does would help
Personality: Face it, Romney is boring. Someone exciting would be nice

The bottom line for the author is that Paul Ryan (42) meets more criteria than anyone else. The Wall Street Journal, Weekly Standard, and other staunch conservative publications and punditss are also strongly pro-Ryan.

Romney is under a lot of pressure from the right to pick Ryan. If he gives in, the pressure for more concessions will only increase. Ryan is not a safe choice. He is as much of a gamble as Sarah Palin was, but for different reasons. Like Palin, he is a young fresh face who would add a lot of buzz to the ticket, but unlike Palin, he is better vetted and is not likely to become fodder for late-night comedians. He is also a serious ideas person and has laid out a detailed plan to greatly reduce government, spending, and taxes, something Romney has not done. A Ryan pick would plant Romney solidly in the conservative camp and win back all the conservatives who don't trust him. He is also from the Midwest, and might even put Wisconsin in play, although that is far from certain.

On the other hand, as Chris Cillizza has pointed out, Ryan is making the Democrats salivate at the prospect of running against him. He is a hard-right candidate who wrote the Republicans' budget plan, which would immediately become the Democrats' exhibit A as to why the Republicans are unfit for public office. The heart of the Ryan budget is a plan to abolish Medicare as we now know it and instead give each senior a voucher that he or she could spend to buy insurance. However, if Obamacare is repealed, which the Republicans want to do, no insurance company would be interested in insuring people who are old and sick although they might offer junk insurance (with high deductibles and co-payments and low annual limits) just to collect the vouchers. No one knows how much the vouchers would be worth, but since the goal is to save the government money, probably they wouldn't be worth all that much. The Democrats would go wild scaring seniors afraid of not being able to get any kind of decent coverage, especially in Florida.

Additionally, Democrats would put the Ryan budget under a microscope and no doubt find many other unpopular items in it that Romney would be forced to defend. In effect a Ryan pick would make it impossible to put any distance between himself and anything in it. The Democrats would say: "If you don't like X, why did you pick the guy who proposed X?"

Ryan has other liabilities as well. He is a leader of a Congress that people universally hate. He also never worked in the private sector; he has been in politics his whole life. Given how much Romney has praised the private sector and attacked people with no private-sector experience, he is going to have some explaining to do. In addition, Ryan is a policy wonk and his political instincts have never been tested. He is surely going to have to give interviews and may have a tendency to speak the truth--even when that is bad politics. For example, if asked what is going to happen to people who are too sick to buy an insurance policy under Ryancare, he might just say something like "That's their problem, not the government's." While absolutely true, some of those people might not like the answer. Last, Ryan is a Roman Catholic. A Mormon/Catholic ticket would be the first time ever that a major party ticket had no Protestant on it. For those evangelical Protestants who are wary of Romney to start with, this might be enough to make some of them stay home on election day.

A Ryan pick has to be seen as a Hail Mary--something the ever-cautious Romney would only do if he felt he was behind and had to go for broke. Unless you are an early bird living on the East Coast, by the time you read this the choice will be known. And all the buzz might just be a distraction before boring Rob Portman or equally boring Tim Pawlenty is announced.

Under Wisconsin law, Ryan can run for Vice President and the House at the same time, so accepting the offer has no downside and even if he loses, would make him a serious player--maybe th favorite--in 2016

A broken clock is right twice a day. You've got some catching up to do to match wits with that broken clock. Until then hold off on your declaration of superior smartness.

Noam Chomsky on the Paul Ryan budget plan...

The trouble with the budget devised by Paul Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, isn’t just its almost inconceivably cruel priorities, the way it slashes taxes for corporations and the rich while drastically cutting food and medical aid to the needy. Even aside from all that, the Ryan budget purports to reduce the deficit — but the alleged deficit reduction depends on the completely unsupported assertion that trillions of dollars in revenue can be found by closing tax loopholes.

And we’re talking about a lot of loophole-closing. As Howard Gleckman of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center points out, to make his numbers work Mr. Ryan would, by 2022, have to close enough loopholes to yield an extra $700 billion in revenue every year. That’s a lot of money, even in an economy as big as ours. So which specific loopholes has Mr. Ryan, who issued a 98-page manifesto on behalf of his budget, said he would close?

None. Not one. He has, however, categorically ruled out any move to close the major loophole that benefits the rich, namely the ultra-low tax rates on income from capital.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yup, heard it late last night while the rest of you were asleep, and had a great laugh. What FUN! Tho' the debate might not be as good as I'd hoped; apparently Ryan is a pretty good debater, and will certainly look better than Biden on stage. But that's okay, the Romney/Obama debate will more than make up for it. Think they'll dare HAVE one? Or more than one?
'
All the fuss and furor is probably still going on...I haven't tuned in yet this morning. It was sure going fast and furious last night! Romney may have already lost some of his older supporters, what with the Medicare thing. Will be interesting watching it play out.

He got his hand forced again, it seems. He's had a terrible Summer, "nobody's questioning Obama's numbers are up", so he had to pull something out of his hat. So Ryan it is; that'll give him a bump and creds with the hard-core conservatives and Tea Partiers...how long will it last, I wonder?

Did Romney ACTUALLY say that, Mike? I can't believe it...the poor man can't open his MOUTH without sticking his foot in it. Did he really??

He really said it, Niki.

Then, after Ryan joined him onstage, he tried to correct himself, saying "Sometimes I make mistakes" - while putting his arm around Ryan!

They're fucking doomed, at this point it's all over but the whinging.
NO amount of vote suppression is gonna counter the abject stupidity of pandering to one of the tiniest minorities around, no matter how loud their temper tantrums get, no matter how extreme their sock puppetry and astroturfing, in truth the batshit-crazy rightwingnuts are but a teensy smidgeon of the populace...
And the REST of that populace despises them with a burning, bitter passion.
I could not have ASKED for a better incentive to drive them to the polls, not to vote *FOR* Obama, as he's been a total fucking disappointment from day one, but *AGAINST* larry and curley here, cause neither of em's smart enough to be moe.

Mehehehe, this just kinda makes my day.

Where did you "hear" that clip for your own self?

Romney's exact words: "Join me in welcoming the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan!"

I was watching it live on CBS. I thought I must have misheard, so rewound it, then rewound it again and got my wife so she could see and hear it as well. We had a good laugh over that one.

Rappy, you either need to get your hearing checked, or you need to check your sources, because what you "heard" for your own self is not what was said. Note Romney correcting himself. Now why would he do that?

Your disconnect from reality is now utterly complete, child.
