Junior Seau autopsy finds no illicit drugs, no brain damage

4:29 p.m. EST, August 21, 2012

Junior Seauhad no alcohol or illicit drugs in his system when he committed suicide, and an initial examination of his brain showed no apparent damage from his years of football, according to the autopsy and toxicology reports released Monday by the San Diego County medical examiner.

Also, his girlfriend, Megan P. Noderer, told police the 43-year-old Seau had given no indication he planned to kill himself, according to the "investigative narrative" attached to the autopsy report...

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Seau, a star at Oceanside High, USC and then the NFL, was taking prescription medicine for orthopedic problems but only drank "socially (and) did not smoke, and there was no history of illicit drug use," according to the report.

At the request of the Seau family, brain tissue was sent to the National Institutes of Health for more complete testing. Brain damage among football players has become a controversial issue in the National Football League, where Seau was a star for the San Diego Chargers and other teams.

The autopsy and toxicology results were released after San Diego news agencies requested them as public documents. But officials at the county medical examiner's office, out of respect for the Seau family, declined to discuss the reports.

Despite what everyone said, Junior had no signs of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) No evidence of brain damage on his autopsy.

( unless you want to buy into the conspiracy theory, and say the NFL paid off the ME, to avoid paying out billions of dollars to former, current and future players... )

From your article, it doesn't seem "everyone" was "wrong", rather that brain tissue was sent to NIH for "more complete testing".

Might be a bit early to be jumping on the everyone-was-wrong bandwagon.

No, not really. You see, the 'everyone' I speak of doesn't refer specifically to the article. It refers to the general consensus across the sports media, sports talk radio, sports writers, and ESPN types who ALL were using Junior's death as a means to go after the NFL, and blaming the sport of football for causing the brain condition which lead to his taking his own life, he was in so much agony.

It was the media who jumped on the CTE story, as a means of sensationalizing it, before the facts were in.

Well, they're in, and it wasn't what they said.

But according to the article you cited, the facts AREN'T all in. Not if they've sent brain tissue for further testing.

The M.E. says HE didn't see any signs of CTE, not that there conclusively WEREN'T any signs of it. I haven't seen any sign that Mitt Romney paid any taxes, either; does that mean the facts are in and he didn't pay taxes?

Maybe Junior was depressed, maybe he suffered mental illness, maybe he suffered something else. Maybe he even suffered CTE. Absence of proof is not proof of absence, is it? If you don't see something, is it still possible for it to exist without you seeing it?

Romney's ( nor Pelosi's, or Reid's) tax returns have nothing to do w/ this thread, so I don't know why you felt the need to bring up such a non sequitur.

I doubt very much that most here even follow the NFL, but for those who did, and know the story, I found it somewhat interesting.

Even if you don't.

DALEK!

Would you to fuck aready and get it out of your systems!

Yes, it looks very much right now that a massive amount of people were wrong about this. It is also true that further study of the brain tissue might reveal something, but that sounds doubtful.

Rappy...good post.

Thanks, and I tend towards women folk, exclusively.

Why Junior offed himself may be discovered with more study. It is a mystery.

JONGSSTRAW

When Junior went to play for the Dolphins they put on a big tv and radio ad blitz campaign touting how the "new" Dolphins had arrived and how this was gonna be our year. I became a season ticket holder and by availability I got two seats half way up the top deck on about the 5 yard line. Not the best seats, and kind of hard to follow the whole game unless the ball was near that goal line, I soldiered on none-the-less through searing heat, withering humidity, pounding rain, and being surrounded by low-life drunks everywhere screaming profanities right in front of children. I went to two pre-season games and two regular season games. Each time the traffic getting in and out of the parking lots was a complete nightmare. I ended up selling my tickets early in the season.

Years later I ran into Junior Seau at The Ale House on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale after work one day. He came in with a friend and he sat down right next to me at the bar. He ordered a glass of beer from the tap. Of course I recognized him right away even in his tropical civies, and then a kind of panic set in. I didn't know what to do. The man was massive, not gym workout massive, but genetic mutation massive. His arms were like tree trunks, and his hands were The Hulk's hands. Finally after a couple of minutes I said hello and told him I was a big fan. I bought him his next beer, and he was friendly and cordial to me and others there for the twenty minutes he stayed in the place. It was a great experience.
