from a right wing, Republican type guy: " How could they have chosen Romney?"

Not sure who his " they" was, but it sounded like " the Party bosses", which ignores the basic fact that Romney pushed his way thru to the top thru a LOT of primary states and primary voters. He won the nomination, fair and square. He wanted the job, whether he was a good idea or bad. The party didn't CHOOSE him, he took the nomination away from Bachman, Santorum, Perry, Palin, Herm Caine, etc. That's how it works, under rules settled by the Republican party itself.

If somebody conned the voters into voting for him, blame them, and then don't ever listen to them again. But his own ambition, existing power and money moved him to the top of the heap, all under the rules. YA don't like it, join some other party, start a new one, or do the work and change the existing Republican establishment.

But get a dose of reality first, instead of listening to the propaganda, and looking at the world thru rose colored glasses.

America loves a winner!

" They ", the powers that be, who ever... each party has their 'insiders'. That's not really a secret.

But Romney, he was better suited for the '08 election, despite the 'historic' charge by Obama.

By '12, a huge issue for the GOP, defeating O-Care, was all but neutered. And even if Romney TRIED to run from his past, and claim HIS was plan was greatly different, he didn't. He (quietly ) boasted about his plan in Mass. Hell, he might have crowed more about HIS HC plan than Obama did for his own!

Yes, the voters elect their candidate. But I have to wonder, when things started looking good for Romney in W.VA, what would have happened if Huckabee didn't interfere as he did. Basically, Huckabee chose to stick it to Romney, and divide his delegates up to best pull the rug out from under Mitt. There seems to have been a bit of quid pro quo between the Huckster and McCain, during the campaign, with Mitt eventually ending up on the outside.

Bottom line...the field of candidates for Republicans was hopelessly weak and pathetic from the onset. Ordinary Congressmen and non-politicians shouldn't even be allowed on the debate stage. They have never, and will never be elected President. They just waste time and money. The only one of the field who I ever thought had a chance to defeat Obama would have been ex-Speaker Gingrich. But for some reason that intelligent and experienced man who pontificates punditry better than anyone else could not make the transition back to being a viable candidate. There was an initial ray of light for him, but then the door shut tight because he just didn't have the right stuff for public consumption any more. Perry self-destructed when voters saw him crumble on stage, and that left Santorum. Romney had to spend a lot of money to defeat the stubborn Santorum in the delegate count, and while that bloody battle was being waged Obama ran un-challenged attack ads against Romney in all the swing states. Obama had people on the ground planning targeted voters long before Romney even won the nomination. The nomination process needs to be changed to something much more expeditious, especially when a challenger is going to take on an incumbent.

I find this shocking, given the talk in 2008. My feeling back then(as was discussed on this site and many others) was that I did want to be in O's shoes. He was stepping up when the country was in such a horrible free fall that he was doomed as far as a second term. I was certain, back then, that he wouldn't make it through 2012.

Events since then changed my mind, most obviously the complete and utter ridiculousness of the Republican field. All the Repubs had to do was lighten up on the crazy TeaBagginess and find someone even half decent as a candidate.

Fail.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

So pretty much the entire right-wing establishment has been selling the idea that Obama is the worst president in U.S. history, and that Mitt Romney was the best candidate they could find to take him out this year, which should have been easy pickings, according to apparently every right-wing pundit on the planet.

So they trot out their best bet, and he doesn't just lose - he gets his ass handed to him in an electoral landslide (that's right-wing pundit Dick Morris's word for it, by the way).

So after being so wrong for so long, how's that math taste?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

The thing I kept hearing for a while was how this shows we should do away with the Electoral College (which I agree with) because Obama lost the popular vote.

Presumably, if he had won the popular vote, only then would he deserve his victory, and it would say something negative about the GOP's positions. Fortunately, that didn't happen.

Wait a minute...

DID the numbers change? Last I heard Obama won the popular by almost 2 million votes. Which would suggest that the folks you heard from were talking out of another orifice than their mouths.

E-T-A: Just looked it up on CNN. Obama 61 million, Romney 58.

Perhaps. But the pin heads running his campaign in '12 were many of the same pin heads running McCain's abysmal campaign in '08.

McCain = Bob Dole. Old white Senator, injured while serving his country, whose 'time' had finally come up, after serving the party for so long, to ascend to the seat of the Presidency. utter disaster.

So, Romney wins the '08 party nomination, loses to Obama. We don't know if he decides to run again. Maybe he does, maybe not. McCain sure as hell never does. Palin, never gets picked as his running mate, as Romney likely goes a different direction. Regardless, the landscape in '12 would likely be different had Romney, not McCain, won the GOP race, back in '08.

Either party CAN change the rules as they wish-- ( Or should be able to. These are party matters, not matters for the state legislatures to make LAW. {And hey, there's a great subject for discussion and another thread}). Maybe the " voters should choose the candidates" logic of the primary election system is a bad idea. Maybe we should go back to the old " smoke filled back rooms" of party bosses. Maybe undemocratic ( small d) deals among power brokers produced better candidates, among winners at least, 50 % still lost.

Or maybe we should elect delegates to the conventions, and then give them free will, let them make a deal and get the best results they can.

Or maybe something like regional primaries, like Super Tuesday was meant to be: fewer single primaries, closer together, grouped among states with similar interests

Or maybe the Democratic party system, committed delegates and Super-delegates who are Party leaders and current office holders, who get super-votes, is a proper compromise.

But too many states, like New Hampshire and Ohio, crave the power and attention that being early-on brings, along with the advertising MONEY. Remember the rush, last year, to go even earlier?

No snark intended. This is a subject that could use serious discussion by the party organizers, and some change.
