It would mean giving up the hostage (he's right about that) and not look good if they were to be the proponents of keeping the tax cut for the rich. Appearance is all! Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Elections have consequences. So lets compare. The President won by about 3%. Republicans retained a large majority in the House and most won their elections by MORE then 3%. The President ran a broad based campaign of many issues while local Republicans campaigned mostly on the issue of Obamacare, the budget, and opposition to tax increases. In fact that 3% margin of the President represents the racist vote (those who would not vote for the white man) and not a particular stance on any issue. Therefore the mandate for House Republicans is to oppose tax increases for the wealthy. The President is just going to have to come to terms with the fact that Democrats lost hundreds of elections last Tuesday at the State and local level. H Hero...must be right on all of this. ALL of the rest of us are wrong. Chrisisall, 2012

If we continue to view this as a hostage negotiation, the negotiator would have a duty to release as many hostages as possible. On the issue of middle class taxes, this is not a situation where it's a good idea to 'hang together.'
