Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This saga has been ongoing for some time. This is merely an update.

The evidence grows that Mississippi wishes to effectively ban abortion in their state. They are accomplishing this by creating a set of criteria for the operation of an abortion clinic that are impossible to meet. On the one hand, clinic doctors must be attending physicians at local hospitals. On the other hand, local hospitals refuse to grant such status to clinic doctors.

This is akin to telling people they have the right to vote, but then putting the voting booth in a locked room.

Do Mississippian women have the freedom to choose? Certainly. But only one choice is available to them.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yes, this one (particularly sickening to me) has been going on for quite some time. It's all of a piece with the "pro-life" (I use the word advisedly, since they're also pro-death-penalty...) tactics to make abortion unobtainable, despite being legal.

They've been very imaginative in coming up with stuff like this. From all the efforts to shame women out of abortion, like forcing them to watch ultrasounds, to disuading them with "forced ultrasounds", to making it so they have to drive a long ways to get to an abortion clinic, then go home and come BACK to abide by the "24-hour waiting period", to requiring abortion clinics to have the same facilities as a full hospital, to the one you highlighted.

It's getting to the point where abortions are impossible except for those wealthy enough to obtain them, those who have the time/money to drive back and forth or go to another state, etc. It's utterly disgusting, and the fact that it's being allowed to continue even moreso. If they keep it up, abortion will become legal but impossible in this country.

And our righties talk about "freedom". Only those "freedoms" of which THEY approve, obviously.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

One more log on the fire for a state we've already got issues with.
Not that it'll see much progress, but I will punt that one to Gus since he's already down there and knows better than I which ivory towers to shake about it - we're STILL dealing with that hellspawned mess in Meridian...

Throwin kids in prison for dress code violations, seriously ?

And this bullshit besides, poor kids get it comin and going, taking into account the original topic all too often born unwelcome and unwanted, and then chucked into the school-to-prison pipeline, too many of them along the way thanks to lack of education, access to contraception and being mentally screwed up enough already to just not care - feeding the cycle.

If ever some people DESERVED to have Al Sharpton sicced on em, it's the bastards behind all this.
And I am sorely tempted to help that right on along, I am.
