This is actually pretty appalling, it's already bad enough that folks on assistance get reamed on pricing due to lack of transportation and dependance on exploitively priced local markets, but this one takes the cake.

Oakland debit card fees draw criticism

ticism-4368734.php

Quote:

For example, if the cardholders enroll the card for federal benefits, they are charged $2. Oakland's card also charges $1 every time money from federal benefits is put on the card via direct deposit.

...

The prices listed on the current terms and conditions of the card also include:

-- 75 cents for each purchase.

-- A $2.99 monthly fee.

-- A $1.50 fee for using in-network, domestic ATMs. Out-of-network ATMs can charge more.

-- A $1.75 fee for every call to customer service.

-- A $1 minimum fee for loading the card at a Western Union.

Ye gods, when yer so poor you pray for junk mail cause you can't afford toilet paper, a dollar MATTERS, it matters a damn lot, and this is just insane.

Ass needs kickin, here.

Damn. I hope everyone is leaving that bank! Other banks have tried shit like this and then backed off at the bad PR, but as banks become monopolies there isn't much choice. :/

I thought the federal government passed a law regarding fees on debit cards.

Or was that another bill that died in committee without ever getting a vote?
