Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...
Quote:Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) according to The Raw Story declared a state of emergency and said that he intended to request federal funds in response to the explosion of the fertilizer plant in West, Texas. He said he received a call from President Obama while the President was flying to the memorial in Boston, Massachusetts. Perry said:Quote:We greatly appreciate his call, and his gracious offer of support, of course, and the quick turnaround of the emergency declaration that will be forthcoming, and his offer of prayers. This is the same governor that in a state with the highest number of uninsured (33% of the population and 49th in the country), has refused to sign on to the Medicaid portion of Obamacare. After-all, that is not his demographic, poor and largely minority (Texas uninsured- 26.3% white, 58.8 Hispanic/Latino, 10.5% Black, 3.5% Asian). This is the same governor that cut budgets in such a draconian manner that the forest fires in Texas decimated many of the Central Texas camping grounds and parks used by middle class folk. He was quick to declare THIS area a disaster and stated he would accept federal help: The demographics of West, Texas, is the demographic Perry will ensure remains whole and satisfied. Perry loves to preach government deregulation. Texas is one of the states where its environmental agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), that is supposed to protect Texans, is nothing but a shill for polluting industries. Here in the Houston area there are cancer alleys that are “technically ignored”. They can only feel when things affect them personally or within a group they are close to. They are the pure representation of a population set that does not have the ability to empathize. They are Right Wing Republicans.

Quote:The fertilizer plant that exploded Wednesday night in West, Texas, reported to the Environmental Protection Agency and local public safety officials that it presented no risk of fire or explosion, documents show. West Fertilizer Co. reported having as much as 54,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia on hand in an emergency planning report required of facilities that use toxic or hazardous chemicals. But the report, reviewed Wednesday night by The Dallas Morning News, stated “no” under fire or explosive risks. The worst possible scenario, the report said, would be a 10-minute release of ammonia gas that would kill or injure no one. The second worst possibility projected was a leak from a broken hose used to transfer the product, again causing no injuries. The plan says the facility did not have any other dangerous chemicals on hand. It says that the plan was on file with the local fire department and that the company had implemented proper safety rules. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/state/headlines/20130417-west-fertilizer-plant-said-in-report-that-it-presented-no-risk.ece

That's about it; he and his have essentially neutered any protections for the public, but by gawd, we, the public, better be there to bail them out when it all comes home to roost! This explosion shouldn't have been much of a surprise; in 2006, the West plant was cited for failing to obtain or even to qualify for a permit. Beyond that, they lied through their teeth to the EPA and public safety officials:Quote:The fertilizer plant that exploded Wednesday night in West, Texas, reported to the Environmental Protection Agency and local public safety officials that it presented no risk of fire or explosion, documents show. And Texas don't need no government agencies...but they'll take the government MONEY after people have died, thank you very much...
