I find it odd. CNN.com, Slate, Yahoo News:Opinion, all the sites I check every day for news have nothing to report. They're still raking over the Boston Marathon Bombing, trying to find some tiny nugget of something that hasn't been reported yet. No more recent massacres, no politics, no Afghanistan, not even the nerd prom. Closest thing to news is the Michael Jackson trial.

Is Congress on recess? If not, they must be doing SOMETHING, or at least, TALKING about something. The White House must be active at something-- Obama gets out of bed every day, goes to the Oval Office. Hasn't gone to a funeral in a couple of weeks.

And there's 50 states, 280 million people; what, maybe 200 major cities, in the US? Must be something going on in some of them? or maybe somewhere in the REST of the world? It is a big RUTTIN' place, must be something going on.

It's way too early for the August, late summer, everbody's-on-vacation news doldrums.

Time for the media to get off of the Boston story; there's nothing NEWS there. The city and the cops are just grinding it out, crawling along with the slow processes of recovery, repair and justice. No story, until somebody actually goes back to court or some investigation ACTUALLY releases a report drawing some conclusion.

I liked the part of Obama claiming he'd not even heard of stories about Benghazi witnesses being threatened into silence. Even though it's been in the msm. Barry said he'll look into that and get back with the reporter with his findings. I thought that was precious.

There's news on all their websites; haven't watched TV yet today, probably won't watch much news. Missed everything for two days, high in the mountains/desert, and yeah, most of what's on the websites is "small" news, compared to big stuff like Boston. There's not actually much on their websites on Boston, most have moved on.

One thing I really liked, and did hear a bit about last night on the news: "President Obama Sides With His Guantanamo Bay Protesters" ( http://swampland.time.com/2013/05/01/president-obama-sides-with-his-gu
antanamo-bay-protesters/#ixzz2S3UCIwav
) Glad to see the Gitmo hunger strike is FINALLY getting press here (it has been for quite some time in international news...) and that Obama spoke up about it again. Time he got back on the horse and closed that hell hole!!

Other than that, tho', I see lots of "regular" news:

Leaks, Rats and Radioactivity: Fukushima’s Nuclear Cleanup Is Faltering

Bangladesh Factory Collapse Will Force Companies to Rethink Outsourced Manufacturing

Where Will the Drone Jobs Go? States Balance Economic Opportunity with Privacy Concerns

Superstorm still bringing down homes

Empty nets in La. 3 years after Gulf spill

Pentagon plans Syria options

Kerry makes headway with Middle East peace, but violence flares

Dysfunction in D.C. leads to soaring cynicism among Millennials

As South Korea and US end military drills, how will North Korea react?

Ron Paul slams Boston police. Has he gone too far?

In other words, basically same stories as were in the news a couple of days ago; digging deeper, different perspectives, different questions, no big new story grabbing the news. Like you, I see more stuff coming out about Boston, just like all the other stories:

Attacks in Russia's Dagestan grab international attention after Boston

Lawyers who defend terror suspects have thankless task. Why do they do it?

7 Five Questions in Congress About the Boston Bombings

2 Four Enduring Mysteries About the Boston Bombings

How a Stupid Mistake Led Police Straight to the Boston Terrorists

Carjack victim: Older brother did talking

Stuff like that. Boston isn't "headline" on any of the sites I check, just still hanging around in the shadows. The Benghazi thing is only "news" to the righties, who are STILL trying to make SOMETHING out of it. Nobody else is paying attention, as is obvious from Obama's reaction to their asnine attempts to make it news.

And what happens less than 1 hour after I start these 2 threads: the Boston cops announce that 3 other persons have been " detained", apparrently to be charged with lying to the investigators, conspiracy ( sounds like conspiracy to cover up, not conspiracy to set off more bombs.) and other charges. No details, yet, of course, or explanation of what they lied ABOUT.

Sounds Like, to me, nuisance charges by BPD.

And I could be, very well WRONG: these detainees, not even " prisoners" or "arrestees", MIGHT have more bombs and have planned to set them off during rush hour tonight, or at the next Red Sox game.

But I don't think so-- if it was that, the BPD would have had ALL the FEDS there, and would have been bragging about the gigantic terror plot they prevented.

Sounds like they tried to destroy evidence to protect their friend. Not an imminent threat, but more than just a nuisance.

I think you are wrong. From what I'm hearing, they recognized the guy when the photos came out; said nothing; texted him and there was some "lol"ing involved, he said "take anything you want from my dorm room", which they did, destroying some things that were evidence 'cuz they didn't want him to "get in trouble", were interviewed by the FBI/cops and lied, even after he'd been identified on media.

Littls assholes...going away for a long time, I hope, 'cuz all I can think of is "how much could have been spared if they'd spoken up right away?" Like maybe that cop's life...? They've been charged...obstruction from what I saw on the bottom of the screen...I hope they go away for a long, long time...

Just awful.

I'm JUST hearing this on the news (just got back from running dogs, turned on TV, heard it and came here), so I could be wrong, mind you. But if what I've heard is true, it sickens me. Said two Sophomores, like him, guys he'd been friends with, and a third...Cuban I believe? Makes me sick.

Odd that you and I see this one so differently, Niki, we're usually on the same page. I see this much as Storymark does, couple of dopey college kids, but I see even less serious intent than he did.

These 3 guys certainly weren't co-conspirators, or accessories before the fact-- no evidence that they had bombs or guns or intended any violence themselves.

Two of 'em were already in custody for immigration matters, the report I saw said. Two of 'em were from Faroffistan somewhere. ( OK, Kyrgistan, I guess it's called.) According to what I saw, at least one was an American citizen.

But it is still breaking news yet, a real shortage of facts and fact checking. I havent' seen ANY real details on the story, just one paragraph on CNN.com. Hafta wait at least till tomorrow to let the real info shake down.

Still the media sucks.

A lot of false stories being floated out there, wild accusations, claims of this or that, which may or may not be true... Right / Left, doesn't matter. The profession of journalism is all but dead these days.

Yep.

Also kind'a blows holes in the "Isolated kid with no friends" storyline. Pretty much anyone could figure it'd be a big risk to help Tsarnaev, and to still go ahead and do so would seem to show they were more than mere acquaintances.

Yeah, NewOld, that's pretty much it. When you're looking at psychology, it's never that simple, and in this case we APPEAR to have one hard-core terrorist and a manipulated follower. I believe I heard the younger was partying after the bombing, or at least around campus or something? College kid, with college-kid friends (two from the same part of the world-ish).

As far as I'm concerned, those idiots who had SEEN people with legs blown off and a dead kid had to be pretty brainless and cold to want to HELP someone who planted those bombs, rather than want to drop a dime and save other potential lives. Maybe just really that stupid, but they lost any sympathy from ME by what they did. I want fair trials and proof, obviously, but from what I've heard, if it's accurate, I'm afraid it's hard to drag up much sympathy for what they're going to face. I cannot conceive of having seen what happened, recognizing who it was, and then wanting to "lol" him, much less not wanting to scream to whoever would listen who it WAS!

And there's this:
Quote:

Three of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's friends were arrested Wednesday and charged with covering up for him. Two told authorities they heard Tsarnaev brag about his bombmaking ability.

After realizing that their college friend was being sought by police in connection with the April 15 attack, the three sought to discard evidence to help their friend “avoid trouble,” according to court documents filed Wednesday.

And the new criminal complaint against them also may shed new light on Mr. Tsarnaev’s interest in bombmaking. Previous news accounts have widely portrayed his older brother as the mastermind of the attacks, but the complaint says that two of the friends heard the younger Tsarnaev say, a month before the The document also quotes one of the friends saying that Tsarnaev appeared to have cut his hair short when the two saw each other on the campus the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth on April 17, two days after the bombing. The timing of that apparent effort at a changed appearance is significant; the next day the FBI made photos of the bombing suspects public.

Mr. Kadyrbayev and Mr. Tazhayakov, who are Kazakhstan nationals studying in the US, have been held in jail for more than a week on allegations that they violated their student visas. Now they are charged with conspiring to destroy, conceal, and cover up tangible objects belonging to the suspected bomber. That could carry a sentence of up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine.

Mr. Phillipos, a US citizen residing in Cambridge, Mass., is charged with “willfully making materially false statements to federal law enforcement officials during a terrorism investigation.” That carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The complaint, written by FBI Special Agent Scott Cieplik, alleges that on the night of April 18, after the investigators released photos of the bombing suspects and asked the public for help finding them, the three men suspected their friend was one of the bombers. They went to Tsarnaev's dorm room, where his roommate let them in. While there they found a backpack containing fireworks, which had been opened and emptied of powder.

According to the FBI account, Kadyrbayev said he knew when he saw the empty fireworks that his friend was involved in the bombings and decided to remove the backpack from the room "in order to help his friend Tsarnaev avoid trouble." He also saw a jar of Vaseline in the room, and identified it to his friends as a bombmaking material, the complaint says.

They removed the backpack, the Vaseline, and Tsarnaev's laptop, the document says, and all three friends agreed the materials should be disposed of. Phillipos said that after talking about that course of action, he took a two hour nap, “and when he woke up, the backpack was gone,” according to the document.

Kadyrbayev allegedly placed the backpack in a black garbage bag and dropped it in a dumpster.

The backpack was later recovered at after a painstaking search of a nearby landfill. So far there’s no official word about the laptop. The contents of the backpack included a homework sheet for a University of Massachusetts class in which Tsarnaev was enrolled.

Defense attorneys for the three denied the key allegations Wednesday, arguing that the young men didn’t intend to obstruct justice. They said their clients had nothing to do with the bombing and were just as shocked by the crime as everyone else.

Phillipos's attorney, Derege Demissie, said outside court: "The only allegation is he made a misrepresentation."

At a court appearance in the afternoon, the Kazakh students did not request bail and will be held for another hearing May 14. Phillipos was held for a hearing on Monday. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2013/0501/New-arrests-hint-at-uns
