Didn't Nixon use the IRS in a similar fashion?

But it's O.K. when conservatives are the target, huh?

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service inappropriately flagged conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status, a top IRS official said Friday.
Organizations were singled out because they included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status, said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups.

In some cases, groups were asked for their list of donors, which violates IRS policy in most cases, she said.

"That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and it was inappropriate. That's not how we go about selecting cases for further review," Lerner said at a conference sponsored by the American Bar Association.
"The IRS would like to apologize for that," she added.

Lerner said the practice was initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati and was not motivated by political bias. After her talk, she told The AP that no high level IRS officials knew about the practice.

Agency officials found out about the practice last year and moved to correct it, the IRS said in a statement. The statement did not specify when officials found out.
About 75 groups were inappropriately targeted. None had their tax-exempt status revoked, Lerner said.

Nope, it's not okay.

If the I.R.S. wants to look into EVERY group that's trying to claim tax-exempt status, that's one thing. But to single out groups based on their name or affiliation? Nope, I'm not good with it.

Because if it had been a GOP administration looking into groups with "occupy" in their name, that would be just as egregious.

There needs to be a full investigation and probably quite a bloodletting at the I.R.S. Apparently the ACLU agrees.

IRS Apologizes for Targeting Tea Party Groups

The Internal Revenue Service is apologizing for what it acknowledges was "inappropriate" targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.

IRS agents singled out dozens of organizations for additional reviews because they included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their exemption applications, Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups, said Friday. In some cases, groups were asked for lists of donors, which violates IRS policy in most cases, she said.

The agency — led at the time by a Bush administration appointee — blamed low-level employees, saying no high-level officials were aware. But that wasn't good enough for Republicans in Congress, who are conducting several investigations and asked for more. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/irs-apologizes-targeting-cons

Keep pushing. There's no excusing targeting specific groups for special audits (they also went after some from the left, and have in the past, by the way, which never seemed to bother you). But to call focusing on groups wanting tax-exempt status who might be involved in politics "government tyranny" is overblown, much as you'd like to make it out to be.

You need some education. Non-profit status means something specific. The two types of tax-exempt organizations in question had requirements:
Quote:

5-1(c)(3): An organization must be organized and operated exclusively for an exempt purpose—charitable, religious, educational, scientific, etc.

501(c)(4): An organization must be organized as a non-profit and operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare--promoting the common good and general welfare of the people in the community.

They are NOT allowed to be tax-exempt if their purpose is political, rather than social welfare:
Quote:

An organization that is organized and operated primarily for the purpose of directly or indirectly accepting contributions or making expenditures to influence the selection, nomination, election or appointment of any individual to Federal, State, or local public office, office in political party, or Presidential electors. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/election_year_phone_forum_slides.pdf

In other words, the IRS questioned whether organizations calling themselves "Tea Party" or "Patriot" might not have political purposes, rather than social-welfare purposes. It's actually not that outlandish a question, to be sure they're not getting tax-exempt status for being politically active. It shouldn't be done to just one side, unquestionably, and now that it's been exposed, there's no question that appropriate action will be taken; some already has. There goes your tyranny; the system is working.

It's their job to ensure that political organizations aren't getting tax-exempt status. We WANT them to do that; and right now, there are any number of purely political organizations out there which ARE avoiding taxes. But to deny an organization tax-exempt status isn't exactly "tyranny", much as you'd like to make it out to be, and the fact that it's been admitted to and action is being taken just proves our system works. I know it's disappointing for you not to be able to create another humongous "scandal", but you'll eventually (after no doubt MILLIONS of tax-payer dollars have been spent "investigating" it) have to content yourself with it just being a "scandal", not something impeachable. Keep looking tho', I'm sure they'll feed you something else when this dies down to blow out of proportion.

The IRS can't be trusted. They flat out lie. After written answers & testifying that there was NO knowledge of targeting, we now have concrete proof that they DID know, a full year or more ago.

The only reason they fessed up to this is that the cat was out of the bag, and they had no choice. And yet, they continue to lie! Unfrakingbelievable.

IRS Official in Charge During Tea Party Targeting Now Runs Health Care Office

The Internal Revenue Service official in charge of the tax-exempt organizations at the time when the unit targeted tea party groups now runs the IRS office responsible for the health care legislation.

Sarah Hall Ingram served as commissioner of the office responsible for tax-exempt organizations between 2009 and 2012. But Ingram has since left that part of the IRS and is now the director of the IRS’ Affordable Care Act office, the IRS confirmed to ABC News today.

But Obama didn't know anything about what the IRS was doing before last Friday. And the stooge of an acting IRS Director who just resigned was scheduled to leave next month anyhow. It certainly does not look good for the IRS to be laden w/ such scandals, when the one who had a hand in the unethical snooping into the private affairs of conservative groups is then put in charge of implementing O-Care.

Obama says we should reject those who claim there's tyranny in the govt.

Obama IS that tyranny.

NBC's Lisa Myers reported this morning that the IRS deliberately chose not to reveal that it had wrongly targeted conservative groups until after the 2012 presidential election:

The IRS commissioner "has known for at least a year that this was going on," said Myers, "and that this had happened. And did he share any of that information with the White House? But even more importantly, Congress is going to ask him, why did you mislead us for an entire year? Members of Congress were saying conservatives are being targeted. What's going on here? The IRS denied it. Then when -- after these officials are briefed by the IG that this is going on, they don't disclose it. In fact, the commissioner sent a letter to Congress in September on this subject and did not reveal this. Imagine if we -- if you can -- what would have happened if this fact came out in September 2012, in the middle of a presidential election? The terrain would have looked very different."

Democrat Senators Carl Levin and Chuck Shumer wrote letters to Sarah Hall Ingram, IRS Deputy Commissioner of the Tax Exempt/Government Entities Division in 2010, basically demanding that the IRS "go after" the Tea Party and other affiliated groups.

And she did so with a vengeance. Over 400 Conservative and religious groups on an enemies list were targeted and had their applications denied or indefinitely delayed. She was rewarded with a promotion and put in charge of the IRS/Obamacare implementaion.

Today's Congressional hearing was pretty shocking, but it was like a drop of water in the ocean. And the Democrats asking the questions were just as pissed as the Republicans. Amazing, but I have NO, I repeat NO faith that what should be done will ever be done. The IG report on the IRS came out in May, 2012, but the whole thing was kept hushed for Obama's re-election. I believe this scandal goes right up through the Senate and into the arms of Valerie Jarrett in the White House. Obama is the quintessential artful dodger, and he'll be out of office before anything incriminates his inner circle. Who's going to jail? No one.

This is nothing less than an out right war. No shots are being fired, but the Left are using the power of the Federal govt to smother any and all serious ( or perceived serious ) threats to Obama, and the extreme, Far Left agenda.

US Constitutional rights be damned.

They will do pretty much anything and everything they feel they need to do, and then smugly, defiantly, lie about it, right out in the open.

I doubt the OLD guard Republicans STILL understand what is actually going on here. To them, it's just more " D.C. politics as usual ", and it's their turn to play the role of feisty and combative minority. To them, the games gets played , where they take a few cracks at leading the country, then it's the Democrat's turn, and then after a few years, the Dems will hand over control back to the GOP. It's not like either side really DOES anything to hurt the other side, it's just how the game is played.

Only this time, the radicals are running the Dem party, and even after 3 elections, the good old boys in the GOP are STILL with out a clue.

I forgot to mention that Sarah Hall Ingram, IRS Deputy Commissioner of the Tax Exempt/Government Entities Division got a $ 100,000 Bonus before her promotion to the Obamacare/IRS group.

Supposedly only the President can approve a Govt. bonus of that size. So if he did, then why? If he didn't, then who did? And Congress???? They allowed this money???

Now see if you can aim that same "objectivity" at the congressional Republicans investigating the so-called "scandals" within the Democratic Obama administration.

You seem to be saying they might have a purely political reason for going after a Democrat in order to support their Republican tea party brethren.

If it was just Republicans concerned about the IRS and AP records scandals, you might have a point. However, politicians from both parties, and editorialists and commentators from both sides of the political spectrum, are demanding investigations and that those responsible be punished.

Funny that the same folks who were screaming for impeachment following low-level malfeasence at Abu Ghraib are trying so hard on the IRS and AP issues to deflect any blame from the man in change.

Which "folks" would those be? If you have any names, please post them.

On the other hand, it's also funny that "the same folks" who call torturing prisoners "low-level malfeasance" are now screaming so loud about some non-stories and non-events in which nobody was harmed or killed.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"... low-level malfeasence at Abu Ghraib ..."

Funny, that 'low level malfeasance' got Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al kettled in the US, afraid to travel to or through any countries who signed on to agreements recognizing the ICC at the Hague. But I'm sure you think it's just a little technicality - right?

The lying and deception to the American people never does stop with these folks.

Never.

IRS's Steven Miller knew of targeting in 2012

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller was told in May 2012 that the IRS was targeting conservative groups for extra review, the agency confirmed to POLITICO.
The tax-exempt and government entities office informed Miller, then the deputy commissioner for services and enforcement, about the “improperly identified” applications on May 3, 2012, the agency said.

Neither you nor the cited article show any evidence of "lying and deception" - the article notes that someone at the IRS knew of the targeting. That seems rather obvious. But nowhere does it say that person lied or deceived anyone about that targeting.

You always get so hung up on whether Bush was ever guilty of "lying and deception"; I know you'll want to hold everybody to that same high standard. Show where Miller lied.

What IS obvious is that you're refusing to read.

They testified , before Congress, that they didn't target groups. They DID target groups, and flatly lied about it.

Kwickie, I know you'd ignore any and all evidence which puts Obama in a bad light.

But this is literally blowing up in his face.

I laugh at your infantile attempts to dismiss, deny and pretend this will all go away.

It's worse than we know. A lot worse.

BTW, you've still not shown where Miller lied to Congress in his testimony.

Be sure to put up that link if you ever find it, 'kay?

Thanks bunches.

Metaphorical, rhetorical, BS on his part. If he knows what those big words mean.

Makes me wonder what kind of dumbed-down PUBLIC schools he attended, and what kind of grades he got in English. We already know about his grades in Reading and logic.
