Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Not "everything", obviously, but a valid point:
Quote:

When a country places more importance on sports than on academic achievement, its decline is inevitable. The American Decline is real and this is where it comes from.

This is why intelligence and knowledge is disparaged in the country that reached the Moon. These days, intellectuals are mocked as “faggy” and unmanly as if brute strength somehow contributed to the technical prowess, economic agility and innovation that made America a superpower.

This is why our politics are a disaster. When you raise of generation to believe that throwing a ball is more important than fulfilling their civic duty to make informed decisions, you allow charlatans to sell their lies to the public unchallenged.

This is where the Steubenville and countless other sports town rapes comes from, the vast majority of which are covered up and ignored. We literally worship at the altar of sports. The rape of young women is a small price to pay for glory immortal.

Until we get our collective head out of our ass and treat teachers and cops and sanitation workers and firefighters and the men and women we send into combat as the priceless resources that protect our lives, care for our children and make our country worth living in, we’re doomed to a future of self-centered stupidity and civic ignorance.

Obviously it's not all that's wrong, but it certainly plays its part, as far as I'm concerned!

Haha!

They say a picture says a thousand words Niki! And they're right.....!

This post still might have had the flaw of having the entire article written around it, but the fact that the image teased in the title was front and center for us all to see with a simple click of the link.

Sorry I didn't read the post, but the image was spot on.

Come on man... I'm trying to be diplomatic here.

I could have said that "for all I know the entire map is accurate..... except for Illinois".

I'd fill that state with Blue AND Red (because the Cubs are awesome and Sox fans are bitches and Black and White died in 1939 when Wizard of Oz made B&W it's bitch).

Say what you will about the verbal "feel-goodery" mentioned in the post....

My only change at all to the actual map would be the "Illinois" was re-labled as "Continued source of Political Corruption"

Not just an American problem, Niki. We have this sickness here too and it drives me nuts.

As a nation, sports are considered so significant in our culture. Yet time and time again we see the ugliness of competition because of how highly paid and significant it has become, drug use, bad behaviour, shocking treatment of women, cover ups....

So just because you acknowledge a problem in one area of society, doesn't mean that you can't acknowledge others.

I'd say that the high road toll indicates that there is something very wrong with the private transport systems in many western countries, including my own.

But might leave it to another thread, because its an interesting topic (or at least I think so).

Nations and empires rise and fall. It's the nature of the world. I don't think you can point the finger at any one ideology, either. That's just nonsense, some things are out of the hands of even the best leader.

The west will falter, maybe fail, maybe not. The issue that will be our undoing, interestly enough, is the vast inequity of wealth in the world. The West expects a standard of living that is not only not sustainable resources wise, but is uncompetetive in a competitive global market. We are seeing, sometimes due to technological advances, more and more sectors being outsourced to lesser developed nations with much lower wages. And Western nations will never be able to compete with that. So what you have is advancement in world power of nations like China and India with an abundance of cheap labour, and little concern for regulating health and safety for either the workers or the products, which are being snapped up by western consumers. The markets are bleeding, so what sustains a nation like mine? Currently, natural resources, services (increasingly oursourced) and public sector employment. This bubble is waiting to burst, baby.

Yep. POP goes the equilibrium.
Thing is, how many burstings can we (as a world) take?

And more importantly for ME, how many more posts from AU can we take? He likes to have a tag from me for ONE post I thought was nice, as if it proves he has some worth in the scope of his many bullshit ideas. I guess I should be honoured that he thinks me so important as to cite my one or two approvals of his hundreds & hundreds of generally stupid shit low-minded & self-serving tirade garbage posts worthy of continual note.

His long due ban from this site is a big reason I visit it so infrequently these days. It just saddens me to no end that such thinking exists in a Firefly fan site....

Not highest-paid guy (or person), but highest-paid "public employee" - state, government, etc. And in the vast majority of states, it's a football coach, meaning most likely a state university football coach.

It is indeed an interesting topic. And on that, let's add some fuel to the fire:

What other things do you all see as contributory to the downfall of the USA?

The pursuit of empire.

We've gotten ourselves too big, too far-flung, and have no way to sustain it. We have military bases all over the world, military presence all over the world, and as with Rome and most other empires before us, we're hollowing out the homeland trying to prop up the empire. We're hollowing out the middle class, and the whole cannot stand without a firm foundation underneath it.

If America fails, it will be because it's what America deserved. There is no outside force that can threaten us; our downfall is coming from within.

Too complex a topic for me, but yes, definitely an interesting discussion to have.

Just popped in to say to Magons: It's not just the adoration of sports. HERE, that goes hand in hand a lot of the time with a DISMISSAL of intellect and learning. GOP regularly goes after those Evil Teachers, state after state, and mocks "intellectual elite"; I've never forgotten the guy who ran for office, and made sure he was photographed with his PICKUP TRUCK, 'cuz you know, good old guys have pickup trucks... And remember Obama being totally TRASHED for saying he'd like every child to have the chance to get a good education? The right, of course, made that "college", even tho' he'd quite clearly stated trade schools, etc., as well. That kind of mentality is what the author is pointing out, and it's gotten worse and worse in recent years.

Disdain for education is certainly a contributing factor, but only one of many, and yes, we're doing ourselves in quite nicely, as all empires do, doesn't take outside attack. Al Qaeda "got it" quite nicely; get us to spread our military might everywhere and bankrupt ourselves, that's helping too.

In the conservative mind, anecdotal evidence is every bit as valid as empirical evidence. If I point out that climate change models predict more extreme weather events, both hot AND cold, Rappy and Dummykun will come back and point out that "It's been a chilly year, so far" or yell that there's *ICE* in Minnesota, therefore climate change is a man-made hoax.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I'll be starting at one of my state's universities in the fall, and their science program is pretty well equipped. That said, their football team is far better equipped. Tuition and fees are constantly going up, yet there's a struggle to find funds for a parking structure or a new library. To be fair, this particular institution is actually devoted to helping state residents with financial need afford all the various fees, so I'm not getting shafted to pay for football uniforms, a coach's ludicrous salary, or a new stadium. That can't be said for everyone, though.
Don't get me totally wrong, there are good chemistry facilities there, but the biggest deal is definitely the sports. Even the student website and all the T-shirts and whatnot reference the mascot. It's never just a university with some well-respected programs, it's the "home of the RAMS!"
(By the by, I plan to get my Masters at a "rival" state school, and literally had a passing professor who teaches A&P ask me, "Oh, but then which football team will you root for??" like it was super fucking important. Yeah, my focus is definitely going to be football rather than studying. Because a biochemistry/neuroscience program is going to be so easy. And also I have no interest in sports. I'm usually respectful to instructors, even if I'm not in their class, but I told this woman my plan for dealing with that conundrum would be the "not giving a shit" approach.)

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

Don't think you've ever been the recipient of the prize for the first guffaw of the morning, Rose, but you got it now; that was GREAT! (And, as always, it's lovely to "see" you!) ;o)

Essentially "everything you said". And may I add 'Huzzah, Colorado!' for their efforts to keep students from being the ones shafted by the inequity!
