Fox News Contributor Claims That Science Supports Men Earning More Than Women

Erick Erickson is at it again. On Wednesday, Fox News had its predictable rhetorical response to the survey that mothers now are the breadwinners in 40% of households surveyed by Pew Research ( http://apnews.excite.com/article/20130529/DA6IQJB00.html). Lou Dobbs of course framed it as “troubling” and a sign of “society dissolve around us.” In response, the echo chamber jumped in with agreement, but Erick Erickson took it one step further. To quote Mr. Erickson:
Quote:

I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science. But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology, when you look at the natural world, the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role.

This, of course, is nonsense, but typical for the science ignorant. Despite the “macho male” rhetoric, in reality most primate species are female dominant ( http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/11/1125_031125_primateevo
lution.html
), including our closest genetic relatives the bonobo ape. The other close relative, the chimpanzee, is male dominant, which may be what Mr. Erickson is referring to. The chimpanzee is also known to engage in spousal abuse, including rape, physical assault, and other forms of domestic abuse ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1541115/Chimps-hold-clues-to-ro
ots-of-domestic-violence.html
), so if what Mr. Erickson held true, then it would be fine for humans to engage in such behavior as well. Of course, this is the same man who felt that awards should be given to those who beat children ( http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/02/05/assault-a-child-fox-contributo
r-feels-you-deserve-a-medal-video
/), so such a scenario is not beyond the realm of possibility. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/05/31/fox-news-contributor-claims-th

Apparently that was too much even for FauxNews' Gretta Van Susteren:
Quote:

During a Wednesday evening Lou Dobbs Tonight panel, Erick Erickson, Lou Dobbs, Doug Schoen, and Juan Williams engaged in a collective lamentation that the study’s findings demonstrate a “troubling” pattern for American society.

Van Susteren posted a video of the panel, including the moment in which Erickson now-infamously said it is “anti-science” to not believe men are supposed to play a “dominant” role in the household, and then wrote her comment: “Have these men lost their minds? (and these are my colleagues??!! oh brother… maybe I need to have a little chat with them if it isn’t too late….)”

;o) Pretty much. I figure we have to wait for a few more generations to die off before we get fewer of these visigoths...
