Texas Gov. Rick Perry: Americans have no right to freedom from religion

Quote:

During an announcement of the signing of the so-called “Merry Christmas Bill,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry and state Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) said Thursday that freedom from religion was not included in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“I’m proud we are standing up for religious freedom in our state,” Perry said. “Freedom of religion doesn’t mean freedom from religion.”

There's more, and I have seen the same story in several sources.

So there it is, get ready for it: your right to privacy isn't gonna protect you from religious dictatorship.

He's right.

People can say "Merry Christmas", or "Happy Hanukkah", or "As-salam alaykum", or "The Flying Spaghetti Monster be with you", and all you can do is not accept their good wishes.

The courts will probably overturn the display of Christmas items on school property, but private folks should be able to inflict their religious good wishes on you, what with the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech.

If you consider allowing folks to wish you well in the manner of their many and various beliefs to be a religious dictatorship, you haven't been paying attention to the real religious dictatorships.

It comes down to how one takes the term ' freedom FROM religion', I suppose.

Does it mean to scrub all religious references and icons from the public view ?

OR, does it mean the ability for anyone and everyone to worship and display their faith ( or non faith ) as they see fit, and the govt shouldn't put any limits on such ?

I can't believe what I just read. Did you actually make a good solid statement and question? Did I read that right?

IT"S A MIRACLE.................

No, seriously, good question.

For me, whether Christian or Catholic, it's always been about choice. The right to choose to worship, or not, should be up to each individual. I've come across a few Christians who can be very pushy. No one should be shamed or brow-beaten into worship.

But, as far as the government goes, they should stay out of it. Separation of church and state. Having said that, why did the US Treasury decide to inscribe "In God We Trust" on currency?

Buried in the spin of the RawStory article...

"The new law states that students and school officials have the right to use religious greetings like “Merry Christmas” and display various religious holiday symbols on school grounds."

Per the Houston Chronicle, "It removes legal risks of saying "Merry Christmas" in schools while also protecting traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or nativity scene, as long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected."

So it seems to relate to display of faith. As noted, the display of religious symbols will probably be challanged in court and struck down.

Awesome. I'm going to be putting up Saturnalia displays at the local schools in the spirit and tradition of the holidays!

I'm going to hang dead bodies from the tallest tree in the area.

No, its true, I have nothing to add.

Just wanted to point out that Catholics ARE Christians, just a denominiation of Christianity. It bugs me that some Americans seem to exclude them from Christian status.
