His family trip to Africa later this month is estimated that it will cost the taxpayers a minimum of $50 million dollars, and possibly as much as $100 million dollars. But as a hideout and distraction from all his scandals and crumbling Presidency, it's da bomb!

ps. Tiger Woods posted a dismal +13 over par in The U.S. Open today, his worst showing ever in a PGA major. Up until the day Obama played golf with him, Tiger had already won 4 tournaments this year, and was favored to expand his major tournament win total. Looks like something really really bad musta rubbed off.

Are you sure you don't mean 2 *BILLION* dollars, like those dolts on the right were harping about with his trip to India?

I have to wonder, though... Where was all your outrage over the first family's SEVEN trips to Africa during Dubya's term of office?

From Jongsie and Rappy? Not. One. Peep.

So what's different now?

Peep.

W didn't take 7 trips to Africa. Not according to the Office of the Historian of the US SecState.

In his first term, he took a trip to Egypt, then another trip, visiting 5 countries. That's 2.

In his 2nd term, W visited Egypt again, once, and then followed that up a month later with another 5 country tour.

I count 4 trips to Africa. Not 7.

No idea which of those he took his entire family. Got any cites on that,or how much each trip cost, Kwickie ?

Huh. The person who can never be bothered to provide cites ( "I'll not jump through your hoops, Kwickie.") is now asking for cites.

OF COURSE I have cites. Do you think I'd make such a statement without backing evidence? That's your game, not mine.

Quote:

As conservatives rage about the cost of Obama’s Africa trip, it is important to remember that George and Laura Bush made a combined 7 trips to Africa all on the taxpayers’ dime.

We’ve played this game before, but anytime the nation’s first black president spends more than a dollar, the right wing freaks out about Barack Obama “wasting taxpayer dollars.” Back in 2011, the right claimed that First Lady Obama’s Africa trip would cost taxpayers millions, but even if you use numbers that the White House disagrees with ($424,000), they weren’t even close.

This time the right has whipped up the fake outrage over a leaked document showing that President Obama’s upcoming Africa trip could cost $60-$100 million. What these same people don’t tell is that George and Laura Bush loved to go to Africa on the taxpayers’ dime…a lot.

During Bush’s second term alone, Laura Bush made five “goodwill” trips to Africa. President Bush made the trip twice during his presidency. Here is former First Lady Bush at an event the night before their trip in 2008, “Tomorrow, President Bush and I leave for what will be my fifth trip to Africa since 2001, and his second trip to Africa since 2001. I’ve seen the determination of the people across Africa — and the compassion of the people of the United States of America.”

Wow, that’s a lot of trips to Africa. In 2007, Laura Bush also took her daughters with her, and they went on a safari. You know, the same kind of outing that President Obama just canceled.

Not much was going right for George W. Bush. Even before the economy crashed, his legacy was 9/11, the unpopular Iraq invasion, and Hurricane Katrina. Back in 2003, Bush laid the groundwork for making aid to Africa his legacy. One of the areas where Bush drew praise was that he spent billions of taxpayer dollars on aid to Africa. It’s funny how conservatives don’t utter a peep about George W. Bush dishing out more than ten times the amount of taxpayer money on aid than Obama will spend on his trip.

Why could the country afford to spend billions of dollars during Bush’s no growth economy, but they can’t afford to spend at least $60 million for the sitting president to travel today?

Giving aid to Africa to combat malaria and AIDS is a very noble cause. It literally saves lives, but 5 goodwill visits to Africa aren’t cheap. Laura Bush wasn’t flying all alone on a commercial flight. Her trips cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

For some odd reason, the GAO (General Accounting Office) records on the cost of the Bush family’s Africa travels seem to have vanished. The media has contacted the GAO, but no specific numbers have been provided yet. President Clinton’s Africa trip in 1998 cost taxpayers $42.8 million. George W. Bush’s two trips five and ten years later were likely more expensive.

The Washington Post story didn’t say that Obama’s trip will cost $100 million, but that the trip could cost $60-100 million, and that the cost was based on similar African trips made in recent years, “Obama’s trip could cost the federal government $60 million to $100 million based on the costs of similar African trips in recent years, according to one person familiar with the journey, who was not authorized to speak for attribution.”

President Obama hasn’t made any trips to Africa, except a 22 hour stopover in Ghana in 2009, so it is pretty clear that Secret Service is basing their cost estimate on the cost of the Bush trips. Since George W. Bush made two presidential trips to Africa, it is likely that he spent more money in today’s dollars as President Obama will on his trip.

The reality is that presidential trips are expensive. It would be fair to be opposed to all of them, but the hypocrisy of only being outraged when certain presidents travel is unacceptable. George W. Bush appears to have had himself quite a little African spending spree, but apparently cost only matters when Barack Obama is the president who is doing the traveling.

Do you have cites to support either of those claims?

Do you think Bush took fewer trips, or fewer vacation days, or do you imagine he was "roughing it" when he travelled, and didn't take "5star luxurious trip"?

You do realize that whenever and wherever the President of the United States travels, it tends to be a pretty "5star luxurious trip", right?

As to this:

Do you have any cites on how much *this* trip cost? According to the WaPost article, the estimates are based off "previous trips"; since President Obama hasn't traveled to Africa during his presidency, one must presume the estimated cost of $60-100 million is based on the cost of the Bush family's trips there.

Let me guess: there was never a "down economy" during their presidencies, right? I mean, it's not like the Dow closed above 15000 or anything while they were in office, which would have been utterly devastating economically, right?

So if it *ISN'T* his skin color that has you so pissed at every single thing this president does, even when it's to exactly the same degree or even less than previous administrations, then tell us all... what is it, exactly? Is it all because he's a Democrat? Is that the ONLY reason you take issue with his travel schedule or with him "wasting" less of the "tax payer's $"

When you hold up two different presidents, one a white Republican and one a black Democrat, and you show that the black Democrat took FEWER overseas trips (both in total and on the at-this-point-in-their-presidency scale)... when you can do that and STILL try to demonize the black Democrat as being so much worse... well, one can only be left with a couple of conclusions from which to choose.

1) You automatically think if a Democrat does it, it has to be wrong. Just pure partisanship; a Democrat could never do something and have it be anywhere near as good as if a Republican did it, regardless of outcomes, all because of political party affiliation.

2) You think that every achievement is lessened, every slight magnified, every fault blown out of proportion, all because he's a black man, as if the color of his skin taints his every action.

So clear it up for us; which is it? Are you a vile racist, or just a purely partisan hack?

When the issue of taking the entire 1st family on a 100 million $ trip to Africa is being discussed, and you come back w/ saying that the Bush family went to Africa 7x's, any reasonable person would understand that you're claiming W + the entire 1st Family. Because on THIS trip, Barry is taking the entire family, it makes no logical sense to compare apples to oranges, by combining ALL trips the members of the 1st Family made under Bush, as a response to ( yet ANOTHER ) Obama family vacation.

But then, expecting Kwickie to think in reasonable, ' normal ' terms, just is asking too much.

My bad.

How many trips did the whole Bush family take during his time in the White House?

Trips to Crawford don't count. You can't 'vacation' in your own home.

Come on Kwick.... I know who you're defending the man against, but by not conceeding that Obama is a terrible pick for president this late in the game, you're just lumping yourself in with the very same crowd of uber-partisan d-bags I was fighting against in here when I hated on GWB (who, in my opinion is now just the 2nd worst president this country has ever seen).

Forget about foreign trips... Remember the President and First lady's date to Broadway, back in the thick of the recession?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/5418693/Barack-O
bama-criticised-for-cost-of-Broadway-date.html

I have actually heard reports that the trip cost over $50,000 in tax-payer dollars, which was an outrage at the time to me because I made little more than that in an entire year, but I'm willing to go with this UK article's low-ball figure. As it is, 4 years later, the $24,000 it cost for the jets and helicopter entorage to New York is still about $15,000 more a year than I make now.

The New York Post estimated the cost of the trip as $24,000 (£14,000) per aircraft, but said the Obamas paid for dinner and their tickets themselves.

(OOPS.... EDITED TO ADD: This article actually makes it sound more expensive. This is $24k PER aircraft, to be a total of $72k, just for "cab fare". WAY more than I heard, and where I work now it would take me about 8 years to make the money spent just getting there and having a "Designated Flyer" home).

A White House spokesman said that taking three smaller planes was more fuel efficient.

Well, white house spokesman.... Thank you and the Obama's for making the world greener. In the mean time, as the article stated, this was opted for instead of just taking Air Force One there alone.

Rather than taking the normal presidential Boeing 747 from Washington and back, the couple opted to fly in a Gulfstream jet, requiring two other small planes to follow, carrying staff and the media retinue.

I'll concede that it might very well have been much more fuel efficient to take 3 crafts there rather than Air Force One. The only problem is, you had to hire anywhere from three to six pilots to man the 3 aircraft, let alone 3-time-overlap-in-upper-high-1st-class support staff. Not to mention the built-in costs of overhead, workman's comp and various other insurance that goes along with it.

The argument that "it was greener" is like selling gasoline to rich people that is "uber green" and good for the environment, even though it's going to cost you $500 a gallon. Hey.... why not? Didn't Jessica Simpson tell us that she took baths in nothing but Evian water?

Evian is Naive, spelled backwards......

BTW... for any president on either side, does anybody know how much the insurance policy is? Doesn't Kim Kardashian have a $5 million dollar insurance policy on her ass now? I'm sure the President of the United States, in today's dollars, is at least worth half of that.
