Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

We've all discussed this before, but I was wondering what is your favorite music and what speaks to you in it.

Rainy Night in Georgia

This was my first real exposure to something that wasn't about blue skies and puffy clouds and puppies. And I really felt it. It felt like night. It felt like rain. It felt like unhappiness and acceptance. It felt like ... I guess I don't have all the words.

Contata Profana

Dealing with a world on its own terms, not on yours. This is the story of an old man who lives with his wife and sons on the edge of the great woods. His sons go out hunting one day. Deeper and deeper into the woods they go. And they find themselves transformed into stags. The father goes in search of them. When he finds them he pleads with them to come home: "The lantern is lit, the goblets are filled. As goblets are waiting: So does your mother stand, As wine brims overflowing, so too, your mother's eyes." But they decline. "Why, why can we never go home? We shall never return because our antler cannot pass through doorways. ... And our tender hooves would splinter on hearthstone ..." And so the sons, now stags, go off into the woods.

The particular performance matters with this one.

What speaks to me - if I had the words I would tell you. Maybe it's the idea of home, which I never felt I had, but which I still feel deeply. Maybe you can tell me, if it speaks to you too.

As for more modern songs

What's not to like about this performance of Dream On? The chords, the progressions, the playing, the lyrics ...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Rainy Night in Georgia. Sigh. They don't write songs like that anymore.

The Molly Maguires... just because it's pretty, and I liked the movie.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

"Cape Canaveral" - Conor Oberst.

Quote:

Oh, oh, oh, brother totem pole
I saw your legends lined up
And I never felt more natural
Apart, I just came apart

Please, please, please, sister Socrates
You always answer with a question
Show some kindness to a petty thief
Forgive, you did forgive

And watched the migrants smoke in the old orange grove
And the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a father to me in 1960’s, speak
Give me comatose joy like we’re on TV
While the mountain’s side was shining wild colors of my destiny

I watched your face age backwards
Changing shape in my memory
You taught me victory’s sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

Hey, hey, hey, mother interstate
Can you deliver me from evil
Make me honest, make me a wedding cake
Atone, I will atone

Wait, wait, wait, mighty outer space
All that flying saucer terror
Made me lazy drinking lemonade
A waste, it just went to waste

Like the Freon cold out the hotel door
Or the white rocket fade over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a daughter to me, your buried shoe box grief
I felt your poltergeist love like Savannah heat
While the waterfall was pouring crazy symbols of my destiny

I watched your face die backwards
Little baby in my memory
You told me victory's sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

And you don’t judge me, that’s not your style
But I won’t see you for a little while
And there’s no worries, oh Lord, whose got time
Are these changes gonna fill your mind

Like the citrus glow off the old orange grove
Or the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
It’s been a nightmare for me, some 1980’s grief
Gives me parachute dreams like old war movies
While the universe was drawn perfect circles form infinity

I watched the stars get smaller
Tiny diamonds in my memory
I know that victory's sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

The lyrics, to me, are snapshots. They're moments in time, caught in all those years spent on the highways, byways, and back roads of America. It snaps me right back to the Space Race, growing up in California, traveling, moving, always moving, never long in one place, never a friend that might last more than a year or two, never a moment of certainty. The hotels, the TV, the Apollo program... those were my escape.

Crossing Death Valley in a VW microbus, no air conditioning, six people in the thing, having to stop long and often because it's running too hot, dad trying to jerry-rig the engine cover lid to stay up so more air might flow through to cool it.

And, at the end, aging. Watching my personal universe shrink, knowing that my eyes are going, my hearing failing, with still so much unseen and unheard. A nostalgia for things gone, and for things still here, for people known and people and places lost, and for those I'll never meet.

But beauty, above all. Not sadness at losing it, but happiness at having had it.

Bright Eyes - "First Day of My Life"

Same singer and songwriter as above (Conor Oberst). He writes snapshots, tiny little Instamatic moments in time.

I can't hear this without thinking of everything my wife and I have been through together, and how I know with 100% certainty that I would be dead if we hadn't met. I was on a very destructive path, saved by the redemptive power of love.

Speaking of which...

Cowboy Junkies, "Small Swift Birds"

Quote:

I have seen people suffocate the dream
Forgetting to turn that one last time while she watches through the door
Focusing on the garbage that she use to ignore
Thinking she looks so beautiful but not yelling it out loud
He should have thought to kiss her before he headed out
Just forgetting how fucking lucky you are to have found her in such a crowd

I have heard about the lives of small swift birds
They dazzle with their colour and their deftness through the air
Just a simple glimpse will keep you simply standing there
Legendary journeys made on fragile hollow wings
The night skies rich with whistling each and every spring
And then there's the day we look for them and can't find them anywhere

I've been told that it's just the way life goes

And their transcendent "Anniversary Song"

"I'll share 'em all for a cup of coffee, and I'll wear your ring..."

Replacements, "Here Comes a Regular"

Quote:

Well a person can work up a mean mean thirst
after a hard day of nothin' much at all
Summer's passed, it's too late to cut the grass
There ain't much to rake anyway in the fall

And sometimes I just ain't in the mood
to take my place in back with the loudmouths
You're like a picture on the fridge that's never stocked with food
I used to live at home, now I stay at the house

And everybody wants to be special here
They call your name out loud and clear
Here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one here today?

Well a drinkin' buddy that's bound to another town
Once the police made you go away
And even if you're in the arms of someone's baby now
I'll take a great big whiskey to ya anyway

Everybody wants to be someone's here
Someone's gonna show up, never fear
'cause here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one who feels ashamed?

Kneeling alongside old Sad Eyes
He says opportunity knocks once then the door slams shut
All I know is I'm sick of everything that my money can buy
The fool who wastes his life, God rest his guts

First the lights, then the collar goes up, and the wind begins to blow
Turn your back on a pay-you-back, last call
First the glass, then the leaves that pass, then comes the snow
Ain't much to rake anyway in the fall

In my earlier life, I was well on the way to being Old Sad Eyes - I was a regular at a local pub, drinking there every night they were open, usually 'til either blackout or closing time, whichever came first, and the race was on. Coming out of a bad relationship, I crawled into a bottle for the better part of a couple years, intending to write about it from the depths, which of course never happened once I dug myself down there... Actually, I did quite a bit of writing, but I burned it all down; it was cathartic. I burned pretty much every piece of that life, walked away, and never much looked back.

But this song romanticizes it a bit, and there are times I wish I still had those nights and that pub. They weren't great times, but there were some great nights in there. We did lots of open mic nights, played lots of great songs, sang drunken harmonies, and I even met a girl... And there was something about walking home in the dead of winter, snow on the ground and the muffling effects that snowfall has on the city, how everything was just silent, and sparkling, and magical, and even in my well of depression, I couldn't help but think of the stars.

And when I say I burned it all down, I mean it. I sold seventeen guitars, a few amps, a crate full of pedals, two bass guitars, all the mics and stands, and haven't touched an instrument since.

In response to "Rainy Night In Georgia", I'll offer John Hiatt's "Feels Like Rain", his ode to New Orleans.

Oh, and this:

A howling wind blows the litter as the rain flows,
As street lamps pour orange-coloured shapes through your window,
a broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes,
and certain emotions force an uncertain smile...

This.

It is incredibly dark, especially given Ian Curtis's subsequent suicide, and yet the atmospherics in it still sound so optimistic, so soaring, so transcendent. There's layers here, real depth.

Oh, and if you have a good sound system, TURN. IT. UP. This will give your surround a good workout.

Luna covering "Sweet Child o' Mine"

I never tried heroin, but for some reason Dean Wareham (Luna, Galaxie 500, Dean&Britta) always manages to sound like he just hit the perfect dose. This is one of a very few songs that sound better to me than the original versions.

Here's another (oddly enough, this one is about heroin, so there's a flow to my thought processes here...)

Well, I wasn't going to comment but

SignyM - You sound so undeservedly unassuming - and with all your assumed shortcomings, still a loving soul.

And - jeeze Kwicko - how many lives did you pack into your years? And then end up so sane? It kind of boggles my mind.

This is a 'time of life' song.

I was taking summer classes and one of the labs I was taking was a 24-hour gig. Being quasi-homeless (not really welcome at home but with no place of my own), I volunteered for all of the night shifts since it was a place to be and even catch a few winks. Someone had left a tape recorder and a few tapes to listen to, and this was one of the songs:

Well played Magons - two of my favourite songs!

I tend to like music that is bitter (sometimes angry), defiant, wistful, benevolent. Slide Away by Oasis is my all-time favourite song. Some even more esoteric favourites of mine:

Huh, KPO, we're on the same page.

Personally, Radiohead's 'Creep' speaks to me, but that's just kind of embarressing to admit.
