I'm shocked, I tell you; absolutely "shocked" (yeah, right...)

A declassified CIA document acknowledges that the agency was involved in the 1953 coup that overthrew Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh.

The independent National Security Archive research institute, which published the document Monday, says the declassification is believed to mark the CIA's first formal acknowledgment of its involvement.

According to Foreign Policy, which reviewed the document, this is the key passage:

"The military coup that overthrew Mosadeq and his National Front cabinet was carried out under CIA direction as an act of U.S. foreign policy, conceived and approved at the highest levels of government."

The document was declassified in 2011. The institute published it Monday after obtaining it through a Freedom of Information Act request.

While this might be the CIA's first formal nod, the U.S. role has long been known. In 2000, then-U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke of the intervention.

"The coup was clearly a setback for Iran's political development, and it is easy to see now why many Iranians continue to resent this intervention by America in their internal affairs," she said.

Also in 2000, the New York Times published what it said was a leaked 1954 CIA-written account of the overthrow.

Indeed, and we've been choking on the blowback for what, SIXTY FREAKIN YEARS?!
Which means even if we got the hell OUT of the middle east now, and ceased our friggin disastrous and counterproductive meddling, we would STILL have to suffer three *more* generations of blowback.

Our future generations deserve a better future than the sum of our failures, and the best thing we could do in efforts to move towards giving that to them is to leave well the hell enough alone.

Really makes you wonder what the world would be like now, if Mossedeigh, a reasonable, secular kinda dude, hadn't been viciously murdered by us to prop up the goddamn Shah, which then lead to Khomeni, and to Saddam, and Osama, and all the rest... our so-called-protectors CREATING enemies to fight in order to justify their own parasitic, malicious and destructive existence.

Seems to me the smartest and most effective move towards eventually having a sane, enlightened and peaceful society would be to take all our so-called-protectors out into the boonies and shoot them.
Barring that, cause not many would be willing to take it that far, we could alternatively strip their funding and apply it to humanitarian and more useful purposes than deliberately and intentionally creating nonstop war and chaos just so the chosen few can enjoy power.
