Democratic lawmakers couldn’t believe their ears as they listened to Sen. Vicki Marble, R-Fort Collins, deliver a long soliloquy explaining that more blacks and Hispanics live in poverty, in part, because of fried chicken.

The comments came during a meeting of the Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force Wednesday at the Capitol as lawmakers on the committee were presented with a number of statistics highlighting racial disparities in the poverty rate.

“When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race: sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up, diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup and you just can’t help it,” Marble said. “Although I’ve got to say, I’ve never had better BBQ and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down south and you — I love it.”

Marble went on to mention how Mexicans eat vegetables in Mexico but stop eating healthily when they immigrate to the United States.

“These things aren’t good for you,” she continued. “There’s so many attributing factors as to why these graphs look the way they do.”

According to Sen. Evie Hudak, D-Arvada, “there was an audible gasp in the room.”

Moments later, Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, responded to Marble on the record — and she didn’t pull any punches.

“The title for this committee is the Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force; and one of the things I will not tolerate is racist and insensitive comments about African Americans, the color of their skin. You mentioned what we eat — I was highly offended by your remarks,” Fields said, addressing Marble directly.

“I will not engage in a dialogue where I’m in the company where you are using the stereotype references about African Americans and chicken and food and all kinds of things. I will just not tolerate that,” Fields continued.

“This is not what this committee is all about. So I will ask that you suspend your perceptions and judgments about African Americans, about poverty — what we’re trying to do is come up with solutions and it’s not about chicken.

“It’s not about eating chicken.”

At that point, the chairman hastily put the task force into recess. http://kdvr.com/2013/08/21/sparks-fly-after-sen-marbles-fried-chicken-

One small problem. She may be 100% right. ( And there's not a damn thing "racist " in telling the truth )

One of Michelle Obama's main issues is for Americans to live healthy. Part of that crusade, is to get people to eat healthy too.

The first lady speaks of 'food deserts ', and the lack of quality, healthy food that's available to certain groups of people. To highlight the issue, the 1st Lady even put in a vegetable garden, on the South Lawn, and teaches kids the importance of eating healthy, fresh food.

There's unquestionably an obesity problem in this country. And yes, the deep south has among the fattest people in the entire country.

So, I guess if you're a Republican, and try to speak of these issues, you're automatically branded a "racist ", regardless of the facts.

Pretty effing pathetic, if you ask me.

I've certainly noticed the correlation between poverty/low income and eating more junk/higher fat/sugar foods. Not quite sure why it happens.

The south is legendary for its fried and butter laden foods. Potatoes, chicken, okra, onion rings, shrimp, steak ( which I never understood ), oysters, catfish...

About the only thing some southern cooks haven't figured out how to fry yet is spaghetti.

While there are valid points to what you stated, to say she might be "100% right" is too silly to "discuss", much less "debate". She was using it as reasoning as to WHY "more blacks and Hispanics live in poverty ". Yes, many poor people eat badly, many in the South and other places eat badly, but they eat badly partially because they're poor, not poor because they eat badly.

By the way, the easy way to remember it is "desserts is stressed spelled backwards".

I don't find ice cream or cake 'distressing'.

Dessert is a typically sweet course that concludes a meal. The course usually consists of sweet foods, but may include other items.

Desert is a landscape or region of land that is very dry because of low rainfall amounts (precipitation), often has little coverage by plants, and in which streams dry up unless they are supplied by water from outside areas.

And no, Sen. Marble wasn't talking about WHY blacks and Latinos ' live poorly ', but commenting on their diets and subsequent health issues.

Quote:

“When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race: sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up, diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup and you just can’t help it,” Marble said. “Although I’ve got to say, I’ve never had better BBQ and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down south and you — I love it.”

Eating poorly leads to poorer health, higher medical costs, which impacts the bottom line of one's economic status. Same w/ smoking. It cost $, both in buying the product, as well as the back end, which results in lower quality of life, more sick days from lower immunity, and eventually shortened life, with a likelihood of astronomical medical bills.

Those speaking out against her comments obviously were ignoring the big picture, and want simply to demagogue and score political points by turning something completely innocuous into a 'racial' issue. Which it absolutely was not.

This from the guy who screams "context!" every time he disagrees with something.

Here's your context. The group meeting was the Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force. The comment came
Quote:

"as lawmakers on the committee were presented with a number of statistics highlighting racial disparities in the poverty rate."

“When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race.....”

Marble went on to mention how Mexicans eat vegetables in Mexico but stop eating healthily when they immigrate to the United States.

“These things aren’t good for you,” she continued. “There’s so many attributing factors as to why these graphs look the way they do.”

Spin away, it changes nothing. If she'd been talking about what you claim, there wouldn't have been an "audible gasp" in the room. They understood.

As to the spelling of "desserts", I noted it for your information only, because you misspelled it. Has nothing to do with "de-stressing", it's a way of remembering the spelling, because often when people are stressed, they reach for sweets. Don't know why you found that so hard to understand, but then you were twisting yourself so hard to claim she wasn't focusing on Black and Hispanic eating habits "attributing" to poverty (I think she meant "contributing") that maybe your brain was just along for the ride.

Gosh, I didn't even notice, but Rap just made my point for me: "Eating poorly leads to poorer health, higher medical costs, which impacts the bottom line of one's economic status." So he's agreeing with her, that Blacks are poor partly because of how they eat.

There were audible gasps in the room because the demagogues have been socially programmed to view anything and everything as 'racist' when a Republican says something about blacks or lations.

No matter how accurate and relevant it may be.

And I didn't misspell 'Deserts', dear. I meant exactly what I said. I was referencing Michelle Obama. Might want to read up a bit more on some things. She wasn't talking of desserts, but of large areas of urban society where quality produce is in short supply, and instead of grocery stores, ' convenience ' stores exist.

And yes, I'm agreeing with her. How is this hard for you to understand ? Her point is valid. Poor eating habits and poor health DO in fact play a role in adversely affecting minorities.

Your point is valid - in that poverty leads to cheap bad food leads to more sick days and less income leads to more poverty. It's a vicious cycle.

I'm not sure that the lady in question had a valid point beyond rambling about chicken. Maybe she was hungry?

In any case diet is not the only factor in poverty and definitely not the predominating factor.

Also: Food deserts which may in fact be filled with unhealthy desserts.

Yup, Byte, the point is valid; what's wrong with it is that the woman is making the point only about Black and Hispanic people, and saying that explains some of the graphs, when it is ALL poor people who have this problem. Ergo, the shock of the audience. If she had said "poor people" or even "poor people in the South...", that would have been different.

Yes, I misread "desert"; saw "food" and "desert" together and misunderstood. But if one Googles "attributing factors", Google will automatically bring up options for "contributing factors"...I believe Rap is wrong on that one. I've never heard anyone use "attributing" that way; I think it would be along the lines of "the results of these graphs can in part be attributed to...", not vice versa. It's not worth getting into or wasting the time on, so I'll agree to disagree.

Nothing about 'contributing', anywhere on the first page.

Thanks for owning up to the desert / dessert non issue. And I'm the one who gets grilled for lazy reading ? Ha!

( I even gave mention of the term 'food deserts', how it was used, and why it was relevant. Guess that didn't catch your eye, huh ? )

I'm happy for you that you're enjoying yourself. The difference is, I ADMIT when I got something wrong.

And on the "attributing" thing, good gawd, minutae is important to you. I believe I wrote that Google would SUGGEST "contributing"...luckily it only took a second to get a screen shot (I didn't even finish typing "factors" before this came up):

Good grief...sigh...

Well, and food related racial stereotypes.

At least watermelon wasn't mentioned.

Whatever point she did have was muddled by a bunch of irrelevant stuff. Hence, rambling.

I have heard that X problem is attributed to Y factors, and Y factors contribute to X problem.

Attribute: to regard as resulting from a specified cause; consider as caused by something indicated.

Contribute: (idiom, seen in "contribute to") to be an important factor in; help to cause.

Both can be right, depends on the structure of the sentence and the emphasis. Contributing factors is probably more correct in this case.

Why would watermelon be mentioned ? It's not fattening.

And Niki, it took you a couple of times of me correcting you before you admitted being wrong.

Kinda after the fact, really.

And as for minutea , you're the one who brought up the whole 'attributing' issue. Not I.
