NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I love those interspecies friendships, but I'm afraid in this case it's not a "friendship". The Barn Owl is, at best, tolerating the cat, but most of the time raising its wings in threat display and attempting to bite the cat. Cat is playing, but owl's body language is clearly "fuck off!" Dunno how a pet owl (it has jesses, so it's obviously a pet) is putting up with it (since obviously he can fly); seems for some reason he's not pissed off enough to leave for good, but he doesn't consider the cat "friend", it's pretty obvious. Wish he did. But then, cats can be tough to have as friends, they like things on their terms...

...Okay, followed up on it. Apparently started in 2010 (Gebra, the cat, has since passed away):
Quote:

Fum and Gebra live in Spain. According to their website:

“Fum & Gebra met when they were one month olds only, on May 2010.

Fum is a black cat. His is a Catalan name that means “smoke”.

Gebra is an owl (Tyto Alba). She was born in Andalucía, and has been trained the falconry way, which is an ancient practice in Europe and Asia. Her name is originating from the Catalan “Gebre”, that means “frost”. It has been possible to get her little domesticated because she was hand-reared, but Gebra doesn’t allow any human contact but the hand that feeds her. By this reason, when she notices some interest from the humans on her, she flies away and doesn’t come back until she feels the danger has disappeared. Gebra goes out flying daily during the falconry season that is from September to June approximately. Falconers use to hold up the birds of prey during the moulting process. When the feather replacement has fully finished there is no danger for the feathers to keep a good health during all the season.

The interplay between Fum and Gebra doesn’t happen daily. Sometimes Fum prefers to spend his time hunting, rather than accompany Gebra on her daily about half an hour flight. Then Gebra goes back to her “muda” (mews) and remains there, in the semi-darkness, during the rest of the day.” http://www.lifewithcats.tv/2012/05/12/cat-and-owl-are-friends-fum-and-
gerbra-2012-the-return/

That makes sense. Impressive that Fum was jess trained; never heard of an owl being trained to falconry before. Done a lot of work with raptors in animal rehab and my time with Marineworld; raptors CAN be pets, sort of, but nocturnal raptor as "pet", that's impressive. I had a non-rehabable raven for 14 years from our local wildlife rehab; while almost all wild bird species are "rasty" by nature, many species, even raptors, CAN be affectionate. Obviously domesticated species like parakeets, parrots, etc., can be VERY affectionate (but also rasty, just ask my friend Choey, who had several!).

So the barn owl trusts the cat sufficiently to tolerate his company. Cats will make friends with anything, depending on the circumstances (especially if started as kittens), they're cool that way. So I amend what I wrote; as much as nocturnal raptor is capable of it, Fum was the Barn Owl's "friend"; for Fum, it was a playmate/friend/toy...that's close enough. They got pretty famous apparently, have their own Facebook page and several videos out. I'm suitably impressed, thank you.
