It’s incredibly pathetic and sad when a politician with so much promise decides to pander to the most hateful elements in our society. In the aftermath of the 2012 election, Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal declared that the GOP needs to “stop being the stupid party.” However, that moment of sanity, and Jindal’s political career, went down in flames on Sunday after he blamed minorities for racism in America, claiming that racism wouldn’t exist if they would just forget about who they are and start acting more like white people:
Quote:

We still place far too much emphasis on our ‘separateness,’ our heritage, ethnic background, skin color, etc. We live in the age of hyphenated Americans: Asian-Americans, Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Cuban-Americans, Indian-Americans, and Native Americans, to name just a few. Here’s an idea: How about just ‘Americans?’ That has a nice ring to it, if you ask me. Placing undue emphasis on our ‘separateness’ is a step backward. Bring back the melting pot. There is nothing wrong with people being proud of their different heritages. We have a long tradition of folks from all different backgrounds incorporating their traditions into the American experience, but we must resist the politically correct trend of changing the melting pot into a salad bowl. http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=204B316A-BBF4-46A4-81AE-CF
D90C1D448C

To translate, it appears Jindal is actually blaming minorities for causing white people to be racist towards them, and is calling on minorities to end racism by conforming to American life as white people see it. In short, minorities should be more like white people if they want racism to stop.

Hypocritically enough, not even a day went by before Jindal violated his own call to action and proudly accepted being referred to as the first Indian-American Governor by David Gregory on “Face The Nation.”

He's right, of course.

That is, HE is right, & not for what you claim he said, because he didn't say " white ", he said "American" . Your 'translation' is a thing of pure fantasy.

Teddy Roosevelt said the same thing, about being " Americans ", some 100 yrs ago.

FYI -

Teddy Roosevelt: "No Room in This Country for Hyphenated Americans"

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all.”

“This is just as true of the man who puts “native” before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance.”
“But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.”

“The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English- Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian- Americans, or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality than with the other citizens of the American Republic.”

Theodore Roosevelt
Address to the Knights of Columbus
New York City- October 12th, 1915

And Obama isn't proud to be the first African - American President ?

I dislike all labels as they are ultimately divisive and used to manipulate. Hyphenated or not. "I'm on you're team and they're the enemy" type nonsense.

But I also feel it is up to other people whether they want to be labeled and what labels and causes they take up. However, some caution: it says more about them than they might intended.

Being over looked here is the obvious message , stated almost 100 years ago, that Teddy Roosevelt said then, and what Bobby Jindal is saying today.

Better for us, ALL of us, to be uniquely Americans FIRST, and still remembering from where we or our ancestors came. For America is an ideal, a mind set, and not to be defined by the color of one's skin, or religion, or culture.

I'm saying that unquestioned loyalty to any principle, even a country, compromises logic. And that seems to be what Good old Teddy is actually promoting there.

I do not identify as "American," except sometimes JOKINGLY when I refer to myself as Scottish-American as a spoof of labels. I do not cherish our government or mindsets as an "ideal." I have no loyalties.

I do this to cultivate my objectivity. You make a nice impassioned argument, but I am unaffected by this passion. Pathos does not sway me.

A person can consider themselves "American" before and above all else - and still have a very damned good reason to be upset when someone else treats them differently due to their color.

Bobby J made the same mistake a Native/ Hispanic person I work with made when he tried to cozy up to some white racists: just b/c you identify with them and try to include yourself by mimicking them doesn't mean they will include you.

What the hell does that even have to do w/ anything, 1kiki ?

Are you saying that whites are all racists ?

Because that sounds like what you're saying, and if so, that's the most racist thing anyone here's posted that I've seen.

If not, then please clarify your comment. It'd be silly for anyone to sidle up and make friends w/ some inbred Aryan lovin' skin head hayseeds who wave the rebel flag and have tattoos of swastikas. But that's nothing remotely to what Jindal was saying, not even a little. So I'm a bit confused as to why you'd even think to interject your anecdotal story into this thread.

Well, pretty obviously you didn't read the study on job opportunities based on the sound of peoples' NAMES - despite identical qualifications:

http://www.google.com/url?q=http://scholar.harvard.edu/mullainathan/fi
les/emilygreg.pdf&sa=U&ei=thocUt2JAaakiQLRgIHYBg&ved=0CBoQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNGbyIKU1uXJsZ0OTPav_QxOMYhQZg

Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamal? A Field Experiment on Labor Market Discrimination

Racism exists. I hope you're not disputing that. In the above study, racism gave white-sounding names a 50% to FIVE TIMES advantage in call-backs for hiring. Remember, this had nothing to do with qualifications - resumes were identical. In fact, the more demanding the job, and the higher the level of qualification required, the worse was the discrimination - reaching its peak of a factor of five between 'Anglo' and 'Other' sounding names.

So, how would just deciding you want to be like 'whites' change their hiring practices IF EQUAL QUALIFICATION TO DO THE JOB DOESN'T OPEN THE DOOR?

Bobby J makes the further logical falsehood of assuming that he can generalize from his own personal experience to all others - statistics be damned, apparently. I'm not going to go into the statistics of positive and negative bias across various skin tones/ cultures/ countries of origin. Suffice it to say that his experience isn't reflective of many others - he is the rare occurrence way out there on the statistical tables when it comes to minorities considered as a whole.

So his advice - if you include yourself in their society then they'll include you - I find it silly, and smug.

I read the quote and it sounded like a bunch of double talk (surprise, surprise a politician talking in double-speak). But I see your point.
I always felt that the Melting Pot existed no matter what anyone said, we all come from different backgrounds, we all are immigrants. No one here is a true American except for the natives (I'm talking technically).

But yeah, in the end he's pretty much placing the blame on minorities for racism. Funny thing though, it's these self-proclaimed Americans who put the race in racism. Racists remarks about the president, saying he's a Kenyan and an Arab. Yet it is those very self-same differences that make our country great, because all are striving for the one thing we all have in common as a people and a nation - FREEDOM.

So, T Party people.......put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Well, it isn't either. But this is like trying to tell a spoiled teenager they need to get up and do some work around the house, when all they've known is goofing off and living off the efforts of others.

Time for some folks to get up, stop whining, and start making something of their own lives.

It sounds harsh to the ears, but it's the truth.

Incidentally, both Rev Jackson and Louis Farrakhan tell their audiences pretty much the exact same thing. Not so much to include themselves into 'white society', but to be more self reliant, and not have to depend on the charitable hand outs of the federal govt. Sounds like reasonable advice, when it comes from self appointed black leaders, but it becomes " silly and smug " when anyone else says it.

That's just getting stuck on stupid. Which is exactly what this thread started out as, stuck on stupid.

He never SAID what some are whining about. This is nothing but pure partisan hysterics.

Obviously you didn't read the study for the SECOND TIME (I posted it in another thread.)

Reading just isn’t your 'thing', is it? Or is it thinking you have a problem with?

The study shows QUITE CLEARLY that even having a non-white sounding NAME makes you lose the job opportunity - despite the fact that your qualifications are just as good. Let me repeat that in caps, since you can't seem to focus on it:

IT'S BEING DENIED THE JOB ON ACCOUNT OF RACE EVEN THOUGH YOUR QUALIFICATIONS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS A WHITE PERSON'S.

How is that like being a spoiled teenager? You tell me.

It's extremely difficult for everyone to be "just American" when everything around you MAKES you a hyphenated-American. Try filling out just about any form. Try getting a job, or an apartment, or any of what the article Kiki put up mentions. Try reading the news. Try watching TV or movies. It's there, based on skin color, clothing, vocal style, etc., etc. Refusing to see it doesn't make it not exist. I'm sure there are many people who would like to be considered AMERICAN only, but who are classified Something-American by everything around them.

It's a game to say otherwise. Every single person who chooses to be "only" American but looks different because of their skin is hyphenated, whether they like it or not. The only ones who can pretend otherwise have white enough skin to "pass", as people have tried to do forever in this country. That would not change if nobody kept any of their heritage ever.

I told this story before, about a supervisor I had once who was my friend, a really beautiful, intelligent, neat woman. Susan moved here from New York, had very sophisticated speech with hardly even a New York accent. She went apartment hunting, ended up getting really friendly with one apartment manager over the phone, the woman couldn't wait to meet her, they had tons in common and the woman was really excited about her moving into the building. She went to see the apartment, the woman was standing at the door as she walked up, suddenly looking very uncomfortable. Told her the apartment was already rented, even tho' the sign was still right there in the window (she hadn't had time to pull it, standing in the doorway when Susan drove up), turned around and went right back inside and closed the door. Sue had someone call when she got home; the apartment was still for rent.

It's not about being "just American", and it's a lie and a game to say it is. Rap will always toe the party line, he has no desire to make sense or deal with reality or facts, by now you all know that.
