...and now, another government shutdown. Thanx for so much MORE than nothing!
Quote:

The Centers for Disease Control said it would see “significant impact” to its operations as a result of the shutdown, and government employees feared the long-term effects on their income with no end in sight.

The shutdown was expected to have sweeping effects across the nation as hundreds of thousands of federal employees faced indefinite furloughs, tourist destinations shut down and services including food assistance and IRS audits are disrupted. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which collects employment numbers, said on its website that it would not “collect data, issue reports, or respond to public inquiries” for the length of the shutdown.

Barricades were set to go up around the National Mall, NBC Washington reported.

“We have 3,000 permitted events on the Mall every year,” Carol Johnson with the National Park Service told the station. “While the government is shut down, all of those events have to be canceled,” she said, including an “honor flight” Tuesday of veterans from Mississippi.

A number of District restaurants and at least one Pilates studio is offering free or discounted services to furloughed federal employees for as long as the shutdown lasts, NBC Washington reported.

“It’s a mess, Congress needs to get their act together. Seriously, they’re like kids on the playground, fighting, fighting for nothing. It’s ridiculous,” said Leathey Chandler, an employee at the Department of Agriculture. “It was ridiculous then and it’s ridiculous now. Get it together, people.”

Another USDA employee, Lawrence Albert, said he was going into work to set up an email away message and change his voicemail before heading home.

“I think it’s miserable, it has nothing to do with democracy or lobbying for causes,” Albert said. “This is not the way government should work at all, it’s a disgrace.”

Employees feared furloughs at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state on Tuesday, where 16,000 civilians work, according to Seattle NBC News affiliate King 5. The base released a statement on Monday saying that civilian employees should report to work on Tuesday, but did not say who would be considered essential enough to stay on.

The CDC would completely close the “vast majority” of its operations, it announced in a release on Tuesday morning. The shutdown would lead to a slower response to public health issues, and its activity monitoring diseases, including flu season, will be severely slashed.

Tourist destinations in New England braced for the full impact of the shutdown, darkening the Fanueil Hall Visitor Center in Boston and closing down Acadia National Park in Maine, according to the Boston Globe.

“It’s going to be a kind of ripple effect,” Sean Hennessey, spokesman for the National Park Service, told the newspaper. “There’s a significant economic impact that our national parks have in their communities.”

Ohio resident Maureen Brown told local affiliate NBC 4 that she was worried about the effect that shutdown would have on government workers in her area. Brown, herself a former government employee, told the affiliate. “If they don’t work then they don’t go shopping, they don’t buy a house and that affects everybody and it makes the economy worse than it is.”

Many others said that even a short-term furlough could cut deep into their finances, including 23-year-old park ranger Darquez Smith.

“I’ve got a lot on my plate right now – tuition, my daughter, bills,” Smith, a ranger at Ohio’s Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, told the Associated Press. “I’m just confused and waiting just like everyone else.”

Department of Veterans Affairs employee Marc Cevasco told the AP he was going to work on Tuesday, but planned to be furlough indefinitely after that.

“Even if it’s just shut down for a week, that’s a quarter of your pay this month. That means a lot to a lot of people,” Cevasco, 30, told the news service. Just a few excerpts from http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/01/20771011-sorry-were-closed-

Obama, not the GOP, has already delayed ObamaCare. The system is not ready either, so that also has delayed the sign up process. Regardless of how the Left wing media report this , it's 100% all on Obama. The bill is passed to fund the entirety of the US Govt. Move on, Barry. Fix your insane "landmark " legislation later. Come to the table and act like an adult, for ONCE in your life.

There are 3 political parties in D.C.

The hyper extreme far Uber-Left, the McCain/Clinton GOP, and the TEA Party Americans.

Anyone who claims the Dems have moved to the RIGHT is beyond nuts. This is akin to accusing Jews of being NAZIS. Complete inverse of reality.

And the whole noting that it's up to D.C. to pass a BILL to create jobs, is beyond ludicrous. That isn't the proper function of govt. Our economy doesn't stem FROM Washington, it is every day Americans who work hard and innovate in a FREE society.

Good grief... Not pass a JOBS bill ? Are you fraking serious ? No wonder this country is so effed up.

Also, Ezra Klein is anti-American. Period.

*head tilt*

I seriously don't know why Republicans don't want to own this.

*Shut down a government you guys thought was spending too much

*The only people who will see much impact from this are people on food stamps, welfare, unemployment, medicare, medicaid, and disability - according to the right supposedly churches and communities should step up and take personal responsibility caring for the less fortunate

*Will seem like business as usual to everyone else since government has been in a contentious standstill since January 2009

Conclusion: Next time take out the electronic surveillance, TSA, and lobbyists too.

15 govt shut downs in the past 30 years, and this is the first time ever that a President has refused to meet with the opposing party to solve the crisis.

"Virgil Caine is my name and I drove on the Danville train
'Til Harry's Democrats came, and tore up the House Bills again
In the winter of 0'13, we were hungry, livin' on Ovaltine
I took the train to Richmond and fell, it was a time I remember, oh, so well

The night they shut the Govt. down
And all the bells were ringing
The night they shut the Govt. down
And all the people were singin', they went
"Na, na na na na, na, na na, na na, na na, na na na"

Back with my wife in Tennessee, and one day she said to me
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes old Barack Obammy!"
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good
Just take what you need, only leave the Spam
But they should never have taken away the Panda Cam

The night they shut the Govt. down
And all the bells were ringing
The night they shut the Govt. down
And all the people were singin', they went

Eh, the concern people are tossing around is that without an established budget, it's going to be impossible to raise the debt ceiling, which means the US defaults on the debt again and loses some credit rating.

But nothing happened last time either? And I don't really WANT the debt ceiling raised... And if it does turn economically catastrophic, which is unlikely, I for one would consider dancing in the ashes of civilization a novel experience.

So... Not me.

attending lavish conferences and seminars at swanky resorts.

making departmental Star Trek videos.

using Govt. credit cards for Asian call girls from 'We Rent Em Yung'.

making Solyndra-type "investments".

shopping sprees for swag bags.

Congressional junkets to Dominican Republic for teenage prostitutes.

Beyonce concerts at White House (well maybe not THAT).

Thanx, Oldengland; the rest of the world isn't fooled, I see.
Quote:

The Republican-led House of Representatives insisted on delaying President Barack Obama's healthcare reform - dubbed Obamacare - as a condition for passing a bill.

More than 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave with no guarantee of back pay once the deadlock is over.

It is the first shutdown in 17 years and the dollar fell early on Tuesday.

Goldman Sachs estimates a three-week shutdown could shave as much as 0.9% from US GDP this quarter.

The BBC's Mark Mardell in Washington says the divide in US politics has grown so bitter that government itself cannot function. Democrats were never likely to make concessions on healthcare reform. But Republicans have made demands that they knew would not be met rather than be accused of weakness and betrayal by their own hardliners, he adds.

Major portions of the healthcare law, which passed in 2010 and has been validated by the US Supreme Court, took effect on Tuesday regardless of whether there is a shutdown.

The US government has not undergone a shutdown since 1995-96, when services were suspended for a record 21 days.

Republicans demanded then-President Bill Clinton agree to their version of a balanced budget.

As lawmakers grappled with the latest shutdown, the 17 October deadline for extending the government's borrowing limit looms even larger.

House Republicans have also demanded a series of policy concessions - including on the president's health law and on financial and environmental regulations - in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.

Guy Crundwell from Connecticut told the BBC that politicians should be solving the country's problems rather than engaging in a "charade".

Yup. The idiocy is that it's very straightforward, it has nothing to do with the country, the budget or anything else; Republicans are blatantly saying "unless you do what we want with Obamacare, we won't pass a budget". Blaming Obama is a pitiful joke, but you idiots will keep making it.

"the dollar fell early on Tuesday"..."could shave as much as 0.9% from US GDP this quarter"...ah, fiscal responsibility. Ain't it great? Assholes.

Thats the sort of contempt for ordinary workers, people who have families, pay their bills, pay tax, that I observe often from the far right.

'These people do something different to me, therefore they are worthless'

You should get a mug with that motto on it.

Unbelievable.

The Right is truly ugly in the US.

From the Guardian

A timeworn trope of rightwing discourse about Iran is that it is futile talking to ideologues. Historian Bernard Lewis thinks that the dichotomy between Iranian moderates and extremists is false. A more accurate description, he maintains, is between pragmatists and ideologues, between those who find it necessary to make compromises in power and those who maintain the pure doctrine of the revolution. How would America's Grand Old Party fare under the same analysis? After all, Republican leaders have complained that Barack Obama was more interested in talking to Iran than to them about the budget. The comparison between Iran and the GOP might be closer than they think.

The GOP ideologues are those who refuse to see their attempts to repeal or delay the Affordable Care Act as an unwinnable fight. Why do it, then? "Because we're right, simply because we're right," says Steve King, the representative from Iowa. As hundreds of thousands of civilian employees began to be laid off yesterday, the pragmatists are those Republicans who believe they are about to sign the biggest suicide note in their party's history.

To bring federal government to its knees for the first time in 17 years is one matter. If the disruption is short, it can be tolerated. Judging by yesterday's rise on Wall Street, investors are betting that Washington will soon find a compromise. But to threaten a fragile economic recovery is quite another matter. Even the partial suspension of government should be seen as a taster of the political paralysis that may be to come. The opinion of the credit-rating agency Standard & Poor's is worth quoting here: "This sort of political brinkmanship is the dominant reason the [US government's] rating is no longer 'AAA',".

It is part of the Tea Party's credo to treat the launch of health insurance subsidies as a groundbreaking development that will change the nature of politics, creating a new class of entitlement addicts. But for anyone else in the party who places strategy above the glory of the fight, the purity of the cause, this week must be profoundly disturbing. They are in the firing line more than anyone else.

Barack Obama has not repeated the mistake he made in 2011, in thinking he can reach a grand bargain and producing instead a series of automatic spending cuts. This time, he has called the GOP's bluff and let federal government grind to a halt. Yesterday was also the first time web-based marketplaces for uninsured Americans went live. Mr Obama should make much of the comparison between change and obstructionism. Fear of the chaos that would ensue if the debt ceiling is not raised before 17 October and the government defaults is the biggest weapon in Mr Obama's armoury. He should use it, unblinkingly.

Great article, Magons, thanx; hit it right on the nose.

"One of these days, the average working stiff (and those who want to work), and government workers will say a big FUCK YOU to the GOP." Unfortunately, Sig, it's MONEY that counts, and those you listed aren't the ones who wield it...and as long as FauxNews, Koch and right-wing think tanks have enough of it to keep brainwashing their voters, it ain't gonna happen, sadly. Tho' if they keep this up long enough, and screw up the coming debt-ceiling debate, 2014 might be a first step toward recovery from this small group of assholes.
