Pure political theater, but everything he said is valid, nonetheless:
Quote:

With negotiations at a standstill, President Obama and Vice President Biden ventured outside the White House for lunch today, visiting a nearby deli to draw public attention to the government shutdown and urge Republicans to reopen the government.

Obama, in shirtsleeves, and Biden, sporting his signature aviators, strolled out of the White House to cheers from surprised tourists and walked a few blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue to Taylor Gourmet, a sandwich shop that is offering a 10 percent discount to workers furloughed because of the shutdown.

“Part of the reason we’re here is, we’re starving and the food here is great. The other part of it, though, is that right now this establishment is providing a 10 percent discount to all federal workers who are on furlough — plus a cookie — and that I think is an indication of how ordinary Americans look out for each other and aren’t obsessed with politics and aren’t trying to extract concessions out of each other,” the president told reporters and the crowd of diners at Taylor’s, before placing his lunch order.

“Right now, the House of Representatives has the opportunity to do the exact same thing,” he said. “This shutdown could be over today…. If Speaker Boehner would simply allow that vote to take place, we can end this shutdown and a whole bunch of families, not just here in Washington, but all across the country, will have the certainty that a paycheck will be coming.”

The president pushed back against an anonymous administration official who was quoted in The Wall Street Journal as saying the White House is “winning” the shutdown fight. “There is no winning when families don’t have certainty about whether they are going to get paid or not,” Obama said. “As long as they’re off the job, nobody’s winning.”

The president picked up the tab today, which came to $21.56, before venturing outside to greet the large crowd excitedly gathered on the street. “Hang tough, Mr. President,” an onlooker reportedly told Obama. “You’re doing the right thing,” said another. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/10/obama-makes-sandwich-run-

'Pushed back' is a clever, spin doctor way of saying he's covering his ass after word got out to the public what they're REALLY saying behind closed doors.

Pure 100% political theatre by Obama to compensate for the empty chair.

What's so hard to understand, Congress holds the country's wallet, they don't pay the bills and our credibility as a nation suffers (plus we go into a recession) lose/lose.

The ACA is law. Period. The Tea Party has failed more than 42 times, in the time-honored tradition of the Democratic vote, to repeal the law.

The House Repubs can end this by doing their job, OMG, they can actually do something right and good and positive for the GOOD of the People. Has the sky fallen yet. They have painted themselves into a corner but, not only that, they have totally disregarded the fact that the president won the election on the very issue they refuse to let go of - namely, Obamacare.

Face it, he IS the POTUS, he won fair and square, he adopted a law that's working in Massachusetts, supported by a Canadian (Ted Cruz' home town).
Those guys should grow up and do something right for a change and not to fill their pockets,

SGG - entirely different issue.

And no. The GOP should never give up. Ever.

All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.

What's most interesting of all, and very illuminating, is that when I was putting up threads about the possibility of the Republicans shutting down the government, does everyone remember Rap was right there, adamant that "the Republicans will not shut down the government".

Now that they HAVE, we get "The GOP should never give up. Ever."

How clearly does this illustrate someone who is incapable of thinking for himself, but is right there to holler "Rah, rah!" to whatever line he's told to support...

We really need to remind ourselves who we're trying to have a rational debate with whenever Rap starts spewing his shit. He contributes nothing to intelligent communication, merely parrots what he's told AT THE TIME.

I hope they think so. They're part of the inside the beltway, get-along-go-along Republocrats, like John " Just adore me! " McCain.

Doing the right thing = being a zealot ? Fine. I'm down w/ that.

Law of the land, huh ??

Why the 1 year delay on the employer's mandate then? That's not part of the law. No one even ASKED Congress if that could be amended. There was no discussion, no debate. Caesar Obamus just decreed it, and made it so.

Same goes for the over 1000 special give aways / waivers, to friends and family ( politically speaking ) for businesses Barry likes or needs to stay in good favor ?

Spare me this 'law of the land ' crap. It's a complete sham, against the will of the people, and everyone knows it.

Deemed Constitutional by the conservative Supreme Court.

For those keeping score:

Constitutional = Good
UnConstitutional = Bad

In the voice of Mr. Rogers:

It's a document written many a year ago by the original Patriots of this country. Tea Party people pay close attention: among some of better known rules is that representatives do something called voting to pass things called laws.

And all these reps gather in a central area whereby these laws are administered in something that grown ups call Government. Yes, even Tea Party goers have reps in this thing called government (contrary to popular belief). Even they can't deny the fact that they participate in this thing called Government. One small problem; Government is supposed to work for the majority of the people of this country, not the other way around.

Hostage taking was once the province of terrorists, that, sadly, is no longer the case.

Hostage taking ? Terrorists ?

Democrats speak out more harshly against their fellow countrymen than they do radical Islamic jihadists.

Also incredibly amusing that he immediately labels Obama going out for a sandwich as "political theater" (which I started right out acknowledging it was), after the politicians on the right have been running all OVER Washington for photo ops at closed monuments--and starting INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEES to find out "why" things are closed, when the contingency reports have been right there for a couple of years!

The only difference is that what Obama said was true, while they're running around saying "Obama shut down..." "It's 'cuz Harry Reid isn't doing his job..." and attacking Park Rangers who are VOLUNTEERING to keep places open!

Again, it's just to laugh...

You mean 'not real', like how Obama was against raising the debt limit, before he was for it ?

Sums up Barry's time in D.C. quite eloquently. Well done.

What you try to dismiss as merely a ' symbolic vote', here is what Obama ACTUALLY said...

Quote:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

Yes. I agree. America DOES deserve better.

America has been getting "ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies" for a little bit longer than that, if you want to deal with reality...like since the beginning. As well as GIVING financial assistance to other countries, and to those OVERTHROWING other governments.
