It turns out that the so-called "pause" in global warming was not a pause at all... it merely too place in areas that we don;t look: the poles.

Missing Heat’ Find Prompts New Climate Estimates

Univ. of York

An interdisciplinary team of researchers say they have found “missing heat” in the climate system, casting doubt on suggestions that global warming has slowed or stopped over the past decade. Observational data on which climate records are based cover only 84 percent of the planet – with Polar regions and parts of Africa largely excluded. Now, Kevin Cowtan, a computational scientist at the Univ. of York, and Robert Way, a cryosphere specialist and PhD student at the Univ. of Ottawa, have reconstructed the “missing” global temperatures using a combination of observations from satellites and surface data from weather stations and ships on the peripheries of the un-sampled regions.

The new research published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society shows that the Arctic is warming at about eight times the pace of the rest of the planet. Previous studies by the UK Met Office based on the HadCRUT4 dataset, which only covers about five-sixths of the globe, suggest that global warming has slowed substantially since 1997. The new research suggests, however, that the addition of the “missing” data indicates that the rate of warming since 1997 has been two and a half times greater than shown in the Met Office studies. Evidence for the rapid warming of the Arctic includes observations from high latitude weather stations, radiosonde and satellite observations of temperatures in the lower atmosphere and reanalysis of historical data.

Cowtan, whose specialty is crystallography, carried out the research in his spare time. This is his first climate paper. He says, "There's a perception that global warming has stopped but, in fact, our data suggests otherwise. But the reality is that 16 years is too short a period to draw a reliable conclusion. We find only weak evidence of any change in the rate of global warming."

Robert Way adds, "Changes in Arctic sea ice and glaciers over the past decade clearly support the results of our study. By producing a truly global temperature record, we aim to better understand the drivers of recent climate change."

This is in response to rappy's posted article about the so-called stadium wave proposal of climate to explain the pause in global temperature rise. EVEN THOSE authors had to factor out the underlying increasing heat in order to make the oscillations pop out. EVEN THOSE authors conceded to the reality of global warming.

However, it turns out they may have been working with a flawed data set. The so-called pause in temperature increase may be due simply and wholly to sampling error... that temperatures in lightly-sampled regions are doing things outside of our usual "known world".

The reality is that no mater where you shuffle heat, whether you warm the troposphere or heat the land masses, or melt ice, or warm the surface or deep ocean waters...until that heat is re-radiated into space and literally lost to earth, it is SOMEWHERE.

My idea all along is that the extreme, unprecedented ice cap melting ... which is happening far faster than the IPCC predicted... is linked to the stablized temperatures elsewhere. I've tried putting this into terms that even the most scientifically-naive surely must have experienced at some time in their lives: that slush ice melts faster than cube ice, and than once ice is gone the martini starts to heat up. No leap of imagination is required, no fancy science involved; just real-life experience is needed to understand what is happening to our globe.

And people who "can't" understand it... it's not that they "can't", it's just that they don't WANT TO. Because this idea gets in the way of all of those other ideas that they really want to hang on to... those ideas that they hang on to with religious fervor, despite all evidence to the contrary.

AGW is itself 'flawed data'.

I was hoping this would be a thread about Nikki Heat, from Castle.

Ahhh, there it is, the predictable vacuous, imbecilic snark. Knew we wouldn't have long to wait.

Truth to tell, I thought the same thing. I heard there was a new Nikki Heat novel coming out soon, and that would be a smashing title.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

But instead of a vacuous tidbit about an imaginary book, it turns out it's about a real, planet-destroying crisis that's already in progress. Bummer.

All the facts in the world would not "convince" Rappy, or any of the "others", about climate change.
