Recently, Arbor Networks, an online security firm, discovered a tool called “Destroy Obamacare!” ( http://www.arbornetworks.com/asert/2013/11/healthcare-gov-dos-tool/) It is being distributed (by whom is not yet known) so it can be used to overload the Obamacare website. According to Arbor, the program is written to perform constant, layered requests to get on two healthcare.gov web pages: the home page and the “contact us” page. The tool is a Distributed Denial of Service program.

Arbor says on their website coverage of this subject that they have no information on the active use of this software — yet — but that they have:
Quote:

… seen site specific denial of service tools in the past related to topics of social or political interest. This application continues a trend ASERT is seeing with denial of service attacks being used as a means of retaliation against a policy, legal rulings or government actions. http://www.arbornetworks.com/asert/2013/11/healthcare-gov-dos-tool/]

As it stands, this “Destroy Obamacare!” tool wouldn’t be able to do much to the Obamacare website, for a number of reasons. The IP address issue, while not insurmountable, presents a problem for the people who would be using “Destroy Obamacare!” Their computers can be identified and blocked and the users prosecuted. It is highly illegal and easily traced. But as you can see by the text which accompanies the tool, those who use it may not be smart enough to realize either of these things:

You don't suppose it's anyone on the right who's doing this, do you? Nah, 'course not. They're all good guys. You betcha.

Niki, that's an interesting bit of news, but it doesn't surprise me. From what I understand, the states with republican governors have also refused to implement exchange market sites for a smoother transition for their constituents.

It's totally ironic how this all has transpired. These fuckers are trashing a primarily conservative agenda in the ACA, that started in Mass with Romney, and is now working like gangbusters in CT, CA, Washington state, MN and Kentucky. The Tea Party and republicans have no freaking clue as to what to do.

There should be an addendum to the Constitution that would automatically remove any representative for dereliction of duty. If a soldier can be court martialed for going AWOL, then so can too an elected official for not progressing the country by using stalling tactics and obstructing the business of running the government.

If the Tea Party doesn't want government, then I say secede from the union and get the fuck outta the way.

I'd not be surprised if this " program " was in fact a product of ticked off Libs, so bent out of shape that their messiah was failing, so epically .

You know the raptard is struggling when he pulls out his tired little "messiah" remark. It always comes out when he knows he has nothing of actual substance to say.

But he tossed out a PN level conspiracy theory.

There was a great bit on the Daily Show the other night, showing how desperate Fox News is to label this as "Obama's Katrina" (how many things have they tried to tack that onto, now?) - and one choice moment was one of the GOP/Fox nitwits saying how Bush can't be blamed for the Katrina response, because he didn't have cooperation from the Governor - cut against a clip of Jindal saying how there's no way he would cooperate with the ACA.

I was going to make a joke about thesae guys maybe someday remembering that this shit is recorded - but I realize they don't care. They know their base doesn't look anything up for themselves, and will just latch onto what they're fed (CHOMP, Pacman style) every time.

That's what happens when your entire platform boils down to "Don't let the brown guy succeed at anything!"

Izzat what it is? A sign that he's tired? I thought it was just auto-pilot. ;o) That's okay, I'm sure Jesus Cruz applauds him.

"a product of ticked off Libs" … yeah: "Obamacare is an affront to the Constitutional rights of the people. We have the right to CIVIL disobedience." Sounds just libs. You betcha. How ludicrous do you think he can get--I mean if he really puts his mind to it?

Shiny, "There should be an addendum to the Constitution that would automatically remove any representative for dereliction of duty." I LOVE the idea, but think about the reality; just think how many "investigations" the Republicans would be running of virtually every representative, trying to find "dereliction of duty"… Given they've tried to impeach Obama every time he's stubbed his toe, it would be simply endless. Of course, THEY'd love that…all those wonderful excuses for not actually doing their job…

Mark, that catch by Daily Show is a great one: "When it's OUR guy, it's not his fault if he didn't get enough help; when it's YOUR messiah, absolutely everything is his own personal fault." Nothing new there…

I hope some idiot Tea Partiers actually try this hacking trick; I hope they get caught, tried, prosecuted and the media makes HAY with it. Talk about absolutely disgusting and self-serving...

Works both ways though.
Just like the attempt to manipulate the vote electronically got cockblocked by Anonymous (leading to Karl Roves epic meltdown when it failed to work), this little bit has been known for weeks by some of the darker, grungier parts of the net, who've decided to throw their own weight in here and there, not out of any sense of altruism or fair play, but simply because tech-illiterate troglodytes are SUCH an easy target...

Hehehehe, I know for a fact some copies of this "tool" carry a far, far DIFFERENT "payload" and woe unto thee who downloads and runs em.

A person can understand the site has glitches and believe that people would want to attack it at the same time. Perhaps thoughts of such deep nature are beyond you.

And even IF the site were being attacked, so what ? Sites are being attacked all the time. Hackers even boast they're doing the site a service, by showing the weaknesses in the security. If anything, folks should be PRAISING 'Destroy Obamacare ', and not blaming anyone for it.

Not spin, just factin'. It has EVERYTHING to do w/ testing, simpleton. Proper security would make this sort of stuff moot. Hundreds of millions of $'s spent, and they still can't make a site work. Effing morons running our country now.

Your right the problems with the site do go beyond those. That does not however make it all right for individuals to try and prevent people from accessing the site as it is. Right now most people can registar and sign up for insurance through the site. There are still to many that have having problem, but for most it works.

Denial of service attacks are used so often because you don't have to break a sites security to use them. In fact there is little security against them, that is why they are so effective. DOS attacks basicly force a website to respond to millions of fake information requests, as if millions of people are trying to access the site at the same time. The only way not have a site slow down is to have massive amounts of bandwith and server space. Far more than most sites would ever need or even want.

First of all, I never said it made it RIGHT. All I'm pointing out is that hackers ( whom ever they are ) have a warped sense of duty, as they see it, to ferret out holes in a website and see if they can exploit any lapses in security. Because if THEY can, then others, with more devious plans, can and WILL.

I dispute that MOST of the site works. They may be registering, but most aren't able to actively enroll into plans yet. They're just filling out forms, on line, in the hopes of actually enrolling sometime. Later. God only knows when.

The hackers are doing a great service to the country. They're preventing innocent people from having their identities stolen from a mickey mouse unsecure website, and they're helping delay the most destructive and unpopular piece of partisan legislation ever foisted on the American people.

Hopefully by the time Healthcare.gov is relaunched the hackers will be ready to infect it with a non-malevolent virus that simply shuts down all user devices as they log on.

Huh? You're dead wrong point one and then blindly reaching with the second. It could be anyone.

The contract WAS a no bid contract.

Feds reviewed only one bid for Obamacare website design

Federal officials considered only one firm to design the Obamacare health insurance exchange website that has performed abysmally since its Oct. 1 debut.

Rather than open the contracting process to a competitive public solicitation with multiple bidders, officials in the Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid accepted a sole bidder, CGI Federal, the U.S. subsidiary of a Canadian company with an uneven record of IT pricing and contract performance.

CMS officials are tight-lipped about why CGI was chosen or how it happened. They also refuse to say if other firms competed with CGI, or if there was ever a public solicitation for building Healthcare.gov, the backbone of Obamacare’s problem-plagued web portal.

Yes, we know the "definition" of lie is different for Rap than for others. But he's the one who first PRAISED this attempt to hack, then claimed he hadn't said it was "right". That's a direct contradiction.

He also claimed it was probably "ticked off Libs", when the wording of the quote makes it crystal clear it's people who want to DESTROY the ACA website, and as Nick pointed out, it's only those on the RIGHT who want that. Their very claims make it obvious who it is and why they're doing it, despite his absurd attempt to spin it.

It's a silly attempt, not worth playing his game further.

Let's see, why would libs be ticked off ? Oh, because Obama lied, maybe ? ( As in ACTUALLY lied, not someone's opinion of a 'direct contradiction '. )

It was never meant to work anyways, so why not speed up the process ? Oh, and as stated, it could have been ANY one, with or with out political axes to grind. To claim ONLY the Right would want to see a big govt roll out fail, is grossly naive.
