STAMPEDER

Hi guys,

I'm an undergrad student writing up a brief report on a TV show fan community for an online communities class. As a Browncoat myself, I chose this site. I was wondering if I could learn a little more about the community here! Some stuff I'd love to know more about is:

Why did you seek out/join FFF?

How was your experience starting out on FFF?

Were you welcomed to the site or were you “bitten” as a new user?

Were there clear guidelines for how to get started or did you have to figure it out?

What do you think of the community now? Would you describe it as healthy (still active, less trolling, etc) or not (dwindling active base, lots of trolling, etc)?

Would you say this site is more geared towards communicating with other users or for sharing content?

Thanks for taking the time to look these over! Feel free to comment below or send me a private message if you prefer. No names/usernames will be listed in the report.

WISHIMAY

You know, I've filled out dozens of these over the years...

I realize it would take time, but if you scrolled through the old threads you could probably find a few just like this. I would start in 2008 to about 2012 is when we got the most like this, though we typically get a couple every year.

I'll be honest, I'm still here mostly because it's fairly anonymous. Social media gets people in too much trouble when you put your actual name stamp on something. (I tried chat rooms and mostly ended up with people just wanting to talk about BDSM, ick...) Have a bad day, post something stupid and your life is ruined. I have learned from being in here over a decade and talking intimately to people in at least 20 countries, that at least a quarter of the thoughts people have are psychotic or painfully stupid, but I have enjoyed the conversations a lot. (Second reason I'm still here.) I have learned so much. I had to lurk for a year before I signed up though.( I even learned to type HERE, in chat BTW) I'm not a joiner.

When I first came here, I was shocked that there was even a fan site for a show that was already dead. I think part of the reason I stayed was that I was curious where THIS story would end. (besides the fact back then it was fun all the time here, it felt like a party every day... we get about a tenth of the people we did, but considering we survive on comic books, and it's been 15 years...AMAZED we are still here) Joss is still putting out comics, so I'm still here. I would KILL for a novel or twelve though.

The show, it's characters and the feel of the stories were and continue to be more different than anything else. It felt like... poetry. Their words, their actions had meaning. I would LOVE to leave this planet and find another. I think at heart I am a space gypsy.

Good luck in college, and finding employment. It's a crazy ass world out there...

How was your experience starting out on FFF? Fine.

Were you welcomed to the site or were you “bitten” as a new user? Welcomed.

Were there clear guidelines for how to get started or did you have to figure it out? Was pretty obvious and simple.

What do you think of the community now? Would you describe it as healthy (still active, less trolling, etc) or not (dwindling active base, lots of trolling, etc)?Definitely less active overall.

Would you say this site is more geared towards communicating with other users or for sharing content? Not much of either anymore.

Oh, I guess I would say where "we" end up depends about 99% on Joss.
If he does something other than comics we may well make it to 20 years or more, but I doubt there will be much left in five more years otherwise...

I have faith that if anyone could bring us back and make it feel just like old comfy pair of shoes, it'd be him...

But, I get that what Fox did was such a wound he may never wanna look back.

I would personally like to see Firefly become the first gen ultra realistic animated series, and many have said the same. Think of what they did with Gollum and that was how long ago?? 2001? Even if they just did one or two a year like Sherlock, I think we'd ALL be thrilled...
