I saw a report by Andrea Mitchell, of MSNBC, that she was tipped off about White House officials purging their phones ahead of possible investigation by the FBI and/or House Intelligence Committee.

So far they haven't been subpoenaed, but that they were notified on March 1 not to do anything by either of the above-mentioned investigative bodies.

Also:

Our fearless House Intelligence Committee Chair, Nunes, cancelled the next hearing next Tuesday. Now, wasn't he the one that went skipping off to Trump to warn....er, I mean...advise the president of some sort of "wiretap" info
regarding his campaign.

Collusion!? Naaaaahhhhh!!!

That is all hearsay at this point. A vocal liberal from an extremely left leaning news site gets an anonymous tip about somebody deleting a contact on their smart phone.

I'm not saying it's not happening. Waiting for something more substantive before I have any opinions about it.

The Chairman investigating Trump is a deeply confused little man. He needs professional help immediately before he hurts himself:

Intelligence Chair Nunes apologizes for disclosing surveillance information to the White House.

House Intelligence Committee Democrats said Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) apologized to them Thursday during a closed-door meeting for his handling of revelations about surveillance that potentially could have been collected about President Trump and his associates during the transition period.

Nunes’s apology was “generic,” Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), a member of the Intelligence Committee, said on CNN, adding that it was “not clear” precisely which actions his apology covered.

Nunes came under heavy fire from Democrats on Wednesday after going first to the press, then to the White House, and then to the press again before consulting with committee colleagues about what he said was fresh intelligence about the president and his campaign aides.

On Thursday, Nunes said it was a “judgment call” to personally brief Trump before speaking with his Intelligence Committee colleagues, who are actively investigating allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections and suspected links between Trump aides and the Kremlin.

When he made his apology, Nunes stressed “that he really wanted us to be bipartisan,” said Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), a member of the Intelligence Committee. “He was contrite. Internally on the committee, he’s a very reasonable guy. But outside, on a number of occasions, he’s acted in the interests of the Trump campaign.” . . .

Nunes told reporters that the identities of the individuals in the report were “very clear to me,” and that they were members of the Trump team.

That has sparked charges that if anybody is revealing more than they should, it is Nunes — for potentially telling the public that hidden names in surveillance reports referred to the president and his advisers, something that is likely classified information.

Nunes said the information was classified, but he argued that disclosing the existence of the report and the nature of it did not reveal any classified information.

Nunes’s own staff were not aware of the chairman’s decision to go public and brief the president and were dismayed by his actions, said several individuals familiar with the matter.

There's a lot more going on behind the scenes than you might imagine, and I doubt we'll ever get the full story, but ....

Before, during, and after Trump's campaign, the DNC and its operatives let loose a barrage of "...BUT RUSSIA!" disinformation.

Russia hacked the DNC servers.

Russia hacked our elections.

Some Trump campaign managers had dark mysterious links to Russia.

There is a dossier involving Trump and "golden showers".

Manafort once represented Yanukovich (a pro-Russian Ukrainian leader)

TRUMP has hidden business interests in Russia.

Mike Flynn spoke with the Russian ambassador! (How dare he?!)

Other of Trump's staff had contact with "Russians". (How dare they?!)

Sessions spoke with the Russian ambassador! (How dare he?!)

Alfa Bank (Russian) "pinged" the Trump Tower server some 2000+ times (with no response from the Trump server) and this was found out by "disinterested" hackers with an inordinate patience for detail.

The FBI was granted FISA warrant to surveill Trump aides on October 2016.

Now, where are these allegations coming from?

They are coming from ANONYMOUS OFFICIALS WHO MIGHT HAVE ACCESS TO INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION WHO ARE LEAKING ALLEGATIONS TO THE PRESS.

The information that they are leaking is just enough to insinuate, but not enough to analyze. The allegations are mostly either absurd, unprovable, or meaningless, and if you want - and I'm sure you don't - I can explain the flaw in each of them.

However, this information is ALSO either classified or confidential. Leaking it is a crime.

====

Trump tweeted that Obama had ordered a wiretap of Trump Tower during the election.

Now, listen to the EXTREMELY CAREFUL denials based on the following (word games)

1) Obama (as President) can't "order" surveillance
2) "Wiretapping" is a specific form of surveillance
3) Trump Tower may not have been the official target of surveillance
4) Before or after the election is a whole 'nother story

When I parse the denials of the various intelligence representatives (who BTW are paid to lie .... it's their job) and their testimony, not only do I get a headache, I get the impression that they have not collectively got their story straight.

Mike Morell - Hillary's choice for CIA Director - has said flat out that as far as a Trump-Russia connection, there's no "there" there. He was part of the CIA to 2013.

FBI Director Comey says that there WAS an investigation of a Trump-Russia connection. The NYT backs this up, as of October of last year. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/01/us/politics/fbi-russia-election-don
ald-trump.html

But then he said there was surveillance but it didn't have to do with Russia.

Nunes claims that there is incidental surveillance.

====

So how do you "investigate" someone, or someone's staff, without surveillance? How can anyone claim to know whether there was, or wasn't, a link between Trump or his staffers and "Russia" without surveillance?

The answer is- you can't. There was surveillance of SOME sort going on. The intelligence agencies understand the restrictions that they're under, and they know how to make surveillance "legal" or how to at least make it LOOK legal.

There is a huge database maintained by the NSA and shared with other intelligence and law enforcement agencies. (This activity and database was revealed by Snowden.) Now, an intelligence agency just can't pop out with the fruits of searching an illegal database, they have to construct a plausible investigation which will re-create the same information. That, I believe, is the source of the information about Alfa Bank "pinging" Trump Tower.

It is "wiretapping"? No
Is it directed against Trump? Not specifically
Was it occurring during the campaign? Probably before, during, and after.

Now, if there is any provable link between Trump and "Russia", I'm sure it would have come out by now. In fact, ANY provable collusion would have been revealed already. The fact that the anti-Trump faction is limiting itself to insinuations and bogus allegations tells me that there really is no "there" there, and all that these "leakers" are doing is either illegal itself ... i.e. "unmasking" a citizen's name ... or revealing illegal surveillance.

Well that's just it Signy. They've kind of painted themselves in a corner at this point.

A) Trump and/or his team were put under surveillance before the election.
B) Trump and/or his team have nefarious ties with Russia.
C) Both of the Above.
D) None of the Above.

You could have either A or B exclusively, but there is no way of having evidence of B without admitting A.

Thank you!

"Surveillance" seems to be the issue that our intelligence agencies are spending an inordinate amount of time dancing around. That, and the ILLEGAL leak of classified information and the unmasking of citizens' names for partisan/ deep state reasons.

It's very hard to even talk "about" Trump or Russia without walking into quicksand on these other issues.

Top NSA Official Says Telephone Surveillance Should Have Been Disclosed

The U.S. government should have publicized the existence of a program that vacuumed up in bulk Americans' telephone call data before its existence was leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency's deputy director said on Tuesday.

How the government may have spied on Trump's team

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’ surprise allegations Wednesday touched on one of the most confusing aspects of the U.S. government's spying powers — the danger that routine surveillance of foreign targets will scoop up and expose Americans' private information too.

Nunes alleged that such “incidental collection” had swept up information on members of Donald Trump’s transition team, possibly including Trump himself. And then, the California Republican charged, widely disseminated U.S. intelligence reports had “unmasked” the identities of some of those individuals, despite procedures that normally shield Americans' privacy.

An example of the utter lack of logical brain-power on the part of some liberals ....

Quote:

So it was gratifying to hear the nation’s head of federal law enforcement say definitively that there is zero evidence to support Trump’s contention [of wiretapping]

Trump wasn't "wiretapped". Got it.

Quote:

That, however, was just the hors d’oeuvre. The main course was Comey’s confirmation of media reports about an FBI investigation. Yes, he said, the FBI is looking into whether Trump’s people colluded with Russia as that country was meddling in last year’s election with the express aim of electing Trump.
Yes, here it is: An investigation that's been going on since October! One that doesn't use the products of surveillance! No phone records! No bank records! No recorded conversations! No copies of emails! No nothing!

So, what are they going to use?
Old newspaper articles? [/snicker]

Did this guy even READ his own opinion piece with comprehension? Apparently not!

Well, we know that Comey went to the WH late Friday.

Was it a mea culpa?

Was it an explanation of the "difficult" position the FBI is in?

Was it a pledge of fealty?

Was it a threat?

Some strange combination of cringing and snapping?

Look Mr President, you're the greatest. We're on your side. We had your campaign in our sights for a long, time, but unlike our investigation of Hillary, we didn't say anything about it at the time, honest! We're trying to track down the NSA's/ CIA's internal leakers, and if you just let me keep my job/ continue to use the illegal NSA surveillance program we'll exonerate you as soon as we can credibly wrap up this investigation, honest! But we DO have this information about you/ your contacts, which I'm sure we don't want to come out. So stop pressing us on this surveillance thing!

I can't imagine. Unlike the various CIA/NSA talking heads who are EXTREMELY predictable, Comey's responses have been entirely equivocal, and he's managed to piss off ... well, pretty much everybody. It doesn't necessarily mean that he's an honest man in a den of thieves, it could be that he's just clumsy.

SUCH AS?

So far, I haven't heard anything lately that I haven't heard before.

There was a lot of crap about "golden showers" and Kompramat. Did that suddenly come true?

There was a lot of talk about Trump's "collusion" with Russia to "hack" the election. Did THAT suddenly come true?

There was a lot of blather about Trump's secret, lucrative deals in Russia. Have there been any sudden revelations about billion-dollar hotels?

Other than recycling blather and gossip, has anything new happened?

Quote:

and NOBODY but the idiotic GoPs are denying that Russia interfered in the election.
HOW? Did they hack the vote? Were they the ones who took the DNC files to Wikileaks? (Assange says "no", and if anyone should know, it would be him!) Given that the CIA has been revealed to be able to put anyone's "fingerprint" on an exploit, it's not even certain that "Russia" accessed the DNC server.

Quote:

If you arent alredy a part uv Putin'z disinfo network, you shoud contact them and send a link to this forum.
I can't believe that someone who CLAIMS to be so intelligent and imaginative should be so duped by propaganda. So far, there has been just a lot of gossip, and no evidence.

Oh, I think there's something going on, all right. But it's not what YOU think is going on.

Again, WHAT connections?

Hillary has had quite a few significant financial ones, about nuclear fuel.

George Bush looked into Putin's eyes and saw a soul he could trust, remember?

According to YOUR group of people, Rand Paul is working for Putin!

Paranoid much?

What you have so far not been presented with is EVIDENCE. Just a lot of people gossiping. Woolsey said this. Nunes said that. Comey said something else. SOME of this information, don't forget, is illegal to have even been leaked.

Part of this crescendo is, IMHO, distraction from Wikileaks' vault 7 and its revelations of CIA hacking capabilities that would rival the NSA. Who authorized the work? Where did they get the money?

Part of this crescendo is that the intelligence services are being exposed and are tearing themselves - or each other- apart.

So keep your shorts on and your brain running. You're likely to hear a lot of lies from all sides. 'n I don't mean "shading the truth", I mean out-and-out lies.

Okay, thought a bit about what's going on, and put my finger on what's troubling me: The timing and tempo of all of these "anonymous" sources who leak speculation, innuendo, and gossip ad infinitum.

Here's a recent example

Quote:

[anonymous] US officials: Info suggests Trump associates may have coordinated with Russians

The FBI has information that indicates associates of President Donald Trump communicated with suspected Russian operatives to possibly coordinate the release of information damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign, [ANONYMOUS] US officials told CNN.

This is partly what FBI Director James Comey was referring to when he made a bombshell announcement Monday before Congress that the FBI is investigating the Trump campaign's "ties to Russia", according to one [ANONYMOUS] source.

The FBI is now reviewing that information, which includes human intelligence, travel, business and phone records and accounts of in-person meetings, according to those [ANONYMOUS] U.S. officials. The information is raising the suspicions of FBI counterintelligence investigators that the coordination may have taken place, though officials cautioned that the information was not conclusive

Okay. ANONYMOUS officials leak information that something might have been going on?

Setting aside that leaks of this nature are probably ILLEGAL, what does this tell us? Well, first of all I guess I set aside the CONTENT of the leak (may be dishonest) and focus on the timing and fact of the anonymous leak itself.

Assuming that the FBI (and the other intelligence agencies) have solid evidence that people in the Trump campaign colluded with "Russia" to swing the election, what do they gain by leaking this information??? If this is a real investigation, all that these leaks would do is tip off the suspect(s) to the progress of the investigation - hardly a benefit! And the investigators would ... with all of that great evidence in hand ... would not "need" a leak to forward their progress.

What else might these anonymous leaks be for?

Well, they might for for POLITICAL reasons. The leaks might be designed to create a popular "swell", such as what happened for the Iraq invasion. This "swell" might be in favor of - in essence- to declare the "illegitimacy" of the Trump Presidency and to favor a deep-state coup.

If a deep state coup is the goal, the question should be Why now?? If there is solid evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, why can' this wait for the wheels of justice to grind? ("The wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine") Eventually, the traitors will be brought to justice.

But there seems to be a franticness about these anonymous leaks, speculation, and gossip. The timing is accelerating. So, what is the urgent urgency?

Well, if finding perpetrators and bringing them to justice is NOT the most immediate goal, what is?

====

I can think of a few things, but I have to look for events in other places - not DC - for some ideas.

But it's too late for that now.

Maybe it's because leaking this information is ILLEGAL??? After all, who wants their name tagged to an illegal act?

That was EXACTLY the purpose of OBAMA'S action to "share" "unblinded" "NSA" "information" among the 16 different intelligence agencies just before he left office- not to keep the information from disappearing, but to create such a wide list of leaker suspects that it's very difficult to figure out who is doing the leaking.

Quote:

Also, you and others seem to think the intel network would already know if there was collusion. How? What do you base that on?
Based on the knowledge that the NSA and CIA - as evidenced by Snowden and Wikileaks and admitted by former NSA head - have the capacity to, and the history of, snooping on anyone at any time. There is allegedly a Great Database in the Sky, with millions of NSA-illegally-collected records on tens of thousands (if not millions) of American citizens which the NSA makes available to other agencies. The challenge for these other agencies is to CONSTRUCT A PARALLEL INVESTIGATION WHICH DEVELOPS THE SAME INFORMATION, but untainted by inadmissible NSA-evidence.

Quote:

If you're going to bring charges against, oh I don't know, the most powerful man in America (maybe), you're going to want to have all of your ducks in a row. Lots of people to get on record yet. This is a big deal.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THESE LEAKS?

Do they improve the actual investigation? No. In fact, they muddy the waters considerably.

Are they legal? Probably not.

Are they to INFORM you? No. They are devoid of probative information.

So ... then what?

The "political appointees" in the intelligence community knew exactly what they were surveilling for, former CIA officer Col. Tony Shaffer told Fox News, adding that the case is "much worse than Watergate by an order of magnitude."

While Trump was not physically wiretapped, with a wire into his phone, Shaffer said the "basic fundamental idea and claim is true."

"Clearly they were after gossip because it was political," Shaffer said, maintaining that the alleged wiretap had nothing to do with Russia.

Binney, who served the NSA for 30 years before blowing the whistle on domestic spying in 2001, told Tucker he firmly believes that Trump was spied on.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/nov/01/snowden-nsa-
files-surveillance-revelations-decoded

November 1, 2013
The first Snowden document to be published by the Guardian was a secret court order showing that the NSA was collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers.
In one top document, published here for the first time, SSO spelled out the importance of these commercial relationships (with major US telecom and internet companies), which come under the heading “Corporate Partner Access”.
In bald terms, it sets out its mission: “Leverage unique key corporate partnerships to gain access to high-capacity (backbone) fiber-optic cables, switches and/or routes throughout the world.”
But exactly how successful the bulk collection of US data has been in preventing terrorist attacks since 9/11 is a matter of dispute.
In the immediate wake of the early NSA revelations, the agency’s director, General Keith Alexander, claimed the NSA surveillance had contributed to the prevention of 54 plots. But that number has been picked apart by the US media and Congress ... Eventually, deputy NSA director John Inglis conceded that, at most, one plot — which he has not specified — might have been disrupted by the bulk phone records program alone.
As well as its upstream collection programs, the NSA also has Prism, which, according to the Snowden documents, is the biggest single contributor to its intelligence reports. It is a “downstream” program – which means the agency collects the data from Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo and other US internet giants.
(Many people rely on the internet for ACA insurance, government transactions, banking and shopping, entering personal and financial information.) But your data may not be as secure as you might hope.
Internet companies have given assurances to their users about the security of communications. But the Snowden documents reveal that US and British intelligence agencies have successfully broken or circumvented much of online encryption.
Much of this, the documents reveal, was not done through traditional code-cracking, but instead by making deals with the industry to introduce weaknesses or backdoors into commercial encryption – and even working to covertly undermine the international standards on which encryption relies.

In one on-line chat - that I'll attempt to link - Snowden reported that contractors/ technicians casually accessed NSA data for personal reasons: for example to stalk an ex-girlfriend and snoop on her current boyfriend.

That old saw that you don't need to worry if you haven't done anything wrong is untrue. Not only is the NSA bulk-collecting data on millions of Americans without cause, but merely knowing someone who has access to the data, or knowing someone who knows someone - can get you specifically targeted for all sorts of trivial, personal reasons, like romantic relationships, or making someone look stupid on a forum.

Really pathetic and weak response, but okay, it's hard to be in the lead because you gotta keep looking over your shoulder.

Allow me to expound/explain:

The GOP and the Hard Right took over the 3 branches of government. Repubs everywhere rejoiced. Now they are in charge, but hold on, now they gotta run things. First on the agenda ObamaCare or the ACA. Trump's Muslim Ban....

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Oval office - Trump arrived.
Bannon and company went into overdrive and shoved his arm so far up Trump's ass to manipulate the "sitting" president. Only one small problem, Prebus's hand was already there and so we had ourselves an old-fashioned battle royale for Trump's ass in marriage.

The White House gang that couldn't shoot straight, well...they couldn't shoot straight. And so, we had our first presidential debacle and then a second debacle with Muslim Ban 2.0 being slapped stupid by another federal judge. Then we have the FBI sticking their hand up Trump's ass as well investigating yet another scandal that he stupidly fumbled into and quite possibly is the worst scandal since - say it with me, it's okay everyone knows - Watergate. Nixon turned over in his grave from laughing so hard.

Followed by a little bitch move that obviously was set up by the Trump White House. Nunes puts his foot squarely in his mouth and scampers off to "reveal" a giant secret to the press (duh!) and the president, for whom he worked on the transition. Conflict of Interest much!
(the stupid prick should just step down now and save himself the embarrassment).

Nunes, in a fit of raging stupidity (boy this guy is a committee chairman?)
decides to cancel the next committee hearing to get to the bottom of the hacking and leaking. You would think that the president would want to find out, once and for all, how all this happened and who's responsible. Now, does that seem right to you?

Now, of course, if this were Obama in the Oval office you guys would be screaming bloody murder. Special prosecutor be damned, he would have been hung from the nearest tree - and you guys know it. No trial, no nothing - just "he's guilty of treason. Fuck him!"

There's so much more, but this depresses me to no end. This ignorant motherfucker in the White House is playing at being president, doesn't have
a clue. The GOP is shitting in their pants because every bit of intel points to the obvious, and they don't want to turn over that rock to see what shakes
loose. This country is being laughed at (and with a Russian accent) and the poor schmucks who voted for this idiot are doubling down on his sorry ass.

I may have missed a couple of glaring mistakes by the so-called Trump administration, but fuck it, I'm done.
