For several months my cats hav been rejecting the cat food. I get them Fansy Feast mostly and sum flavorz uv the cheaper normal size canz, also frum Purina.

Alot uv stuff haz sat on a plate all day, finally left on the porch for the possumz & racoonz.

Tonite I opened 2 canz uv Purina Friskies with Garden Greenz and put them on a plate on the porch to see how the possum who iz usually the 1st guy to show up liked it.

He didnt. He ignored it and munched on the Purina Dog Chow dry food thats 20$ for a 55 pound sack! Relatively awful stuff that iz usually the last thing they eat. And keep in mind that possumz will eat just about anything. They will eat their own poop if therez nothing else!

My oldest cat died yesterday (aNJE, 19) and now I'm wondering if there may be another melamine type situation going on, exept not melamine, rather sumthing animalz can smell.

I'm going to feed them real meat only from now on. The risk uv poizon iz too great, plus money wasted on 'food' that gets tossed out.

I just happened to see an article today about "vomitoxin" in corn. It's a fungus that generates a compound which makes animals (incl people) vomit.

Quote:

Exclusive: Vomitoxin makes nasty appearance for U.S. farm sector

A fungus that causes “vomitoxin” has been found in some U.S. corn harvested last year, forcing poultry and pork farmers to test their grain, and giving headaches to grain growers already wrestling with massive supplies and low prices. The plant toxin sickens livestock and can also make humans and pets fall ill.

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture first isolated the toxin in 1973 after an unusually wet winter in the Midwest ...

The spread of vomitoxin is concentrated in Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, and parts of Iowa and Michigan, and its full impact is not yet known, according to state officials and data gathered by food testing firm Neogen Corp. (NEOG.O)

In Indiana, 40 of 92 counties had at least one load of corn harvested last fall that has tested positive for vomitoxin, according to the Office of Indiana State Chemist's county survey. In 2015 and 2014, no more than four counties saw grain affected by the fungus. [a tenfold increase]

And in a "considerable" share of corn crops tested in Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana since last fall's harvest, the vomitoxin levels have tested high enough to be considered too toxic for humans, pets, hogs, chickens and dairy cattle, according to public and private data compiled by Neogen. The company did not state what percent of each state's corn crop was tested....

If the cat food had corn, cornmeal, or corn gluten in it, maybe it was contaminated?

Its possible. They arent required to list the ingredients in pet food.

Most uv my cats dont barf very often. PiWaKIT haz alwayz been a barfer. I dont no if its sumthing rong with the food that she iz particularly sensitiv to or she just haz a bad habit. It will be a few weeks befor I no for sure.

I read years ago that Purina foods were killing pets.
I've not bought any of it since.

My 3 cats may outlive me ... hmmm.

There is another problem with cat food ... some of them didn't add enough B1 to the mix. Apparently B1 is destroyed during cooking, so the manufacturers have to add B1 AFTER the food is cooked (I can't imagine how they do that for canned cat food!) and some weren't adding enough.

Another thing that they need to add to cat food is taurine- an amino acid that cats need more of.

On my cat food can:
Taurine (min 0.05%). Thiamin, zinc, iron, & a whole bunch of other stuff.
Thiamin mononitrate is in the middle of the list, betweein zinc & iron.
Of course, they really like it, 'cause it's moist & smells yummy!!
I lied above, tho. This is made by Purina Friskies!!
I need a secretary to read stuff to me :(

The kibble I give them is from the Blue Wilderness Co.
They all look & act perfectly healthy to me. They are 9 years old.
(Note: must find a better canned cat food.)

I had a few cats die from the '07 melamine dizaster. PiWaKIT's sunz, ReJE & ToME. But it wuznt Purina - they didnt get their protein stock from the Chineze supplier that found they coud cheat the protein % test with the industrial kemikl.

My cats hav adapted to the 'real' food diet, exept I still get them Purina Meow Mix crunchyz.

Don't domestic cats need something crunchy, to keep their teeth working? If they only get "soft" food, it doesn't clean their teeth as well?

Hard to say for sure. Therez alot uv BS out there created to get us to buy junk, and pet food iz not well regulated. So many long established beliefs about peepl food hav turned out to be false that I'm skeptical about anything, old or new about pet food.
