The screen name is Anonymous, but it's signed Alan Tudyk. Sure reads well.

Can you confirm?

How do "anonymous" folks make posts? I thought you had to login and sign over your grandma to be able to posts.

HAKEN

Likes to mess with stuffs.

Sorry, can't confirm since it was posted as a response in the blog.

Perhaps, Alan, if you're reading this, were to email me and confirm?

For those wondering what the heck we're talking about, here's the post in question. It sounds legit enough.

And "Hoban?" Isn't that Korean?

Quote:

I saw the movie at the premiere last Wednesday. Like other Alex Proyas movies the action and spectacle are backed up by a good and engaging story. Converse to the statements made in the above unsigned blog, Will Smith is required to act in this movie and he does his best work since Ali. I like this performance better actually because it doesn't crutch on an impersonation of someone we've seen so many times and think we know. The action is amazing and Proyas keeps it fresh. The fight choreographer and stunt co-ordinater worked on the last two Matrix movies and does not dissappoint.

I don't think anyone should pre-judge this movie and make plans to, "boo," or boycott it. It's a good flick. I urge you to give it a chance. I think you will be pleased you did.

This isn't a direct film translation of Asimov's amazing book by the same title. The book is a series of robot short stories. The movie is only one story with a conflict in keeeping with those in Asimov's. A robot or robots seemingly subverting their 3 Laws programming and the detective story that follows trying to uncover how and why it is happening. Some of the characters names are familliar, like Dr. Susan Clalvin, still an anti-social robo psychologist, but definately not the frumpy overwieght woman Asimov invisioned. Personally I prefer the casting of Bridget Moynihan to that of say, Kathy Bates. She just looks better in futuristic leather pants. As far as Alan Tudyk's performance goes, as Sonny the robot so much of the movie's action revolves around, I can't say. Not because I don't have an opinion, but my opinion is decidedly biased. I am Alan Tudyk. I play Sonny the robot in addition to Wash the pilot. I don't usually write on this site because I'm usually in agreement with the positive support of our crew on Serenity. My comments would amount to, "I agree, I agree, me too, me too." I did feel the need to write today however because the comments were so negative about a product no one commenting has seen. As someone who spent 6 months shooting it and now having seen it, I hope to stem the premature bashing and encourage you to withhold your opinion until you have had a chance to view it. The trailers focus on the action with only a hint at the story. Trailers have to be big action, shoot em up, adrenaline pumpers, and I am happy to report, that the story is too layered and complex to get across in the short form of a trailer.

One last thing. I, Robot has been great for Serenity. Between the premiere and the press junket that finished Friday, I have given interviews to 75 to 100 journalists. More than most asked what I was doing now (we all know what that is), or just plain asked how Serenity was going. I was happy to report we are still flying and all was shiny. I couldn't say too much about the story or else Joss would change all my lines to Chinese.

So, please express your opinions of 'I, Robot' the movie freely, just wait till you have an informed one to do so. It opens July 16th, this Friday in case you didn't know.

Cheers,
Alan Tudyk

Nah, Hoban isn't anything Korean at all. It's an old English name and also a town in Texas though...

Excellent! I, for one, have been looking forward to I, Robot. I plan to take myself to see it opening night for my birthday.

I hope Hoban Washburne turns out to really be his name.

Jesus, so Alan responding to my blog has become Hot Firefly News now? What the hell?

Hey, I was as blown away as anyone to read that, but look, he worked hard on "I, Robot" for quite a number of months, and is proud of his work. I am proud to be his fan.

But leave the guy alone, he was only speaking from the heart. We'll all have this conversation again come Friday.

Yo,
Qs

I don' t think anyone was questioning anything within "Alan's" post. Except, we're just not 100% diamond sure it was Alan. It's just standard SOP for anonymous posts to hold back full bowing and dirt-kisssing until confirmation. That is all. :-)

I personally don't mind the Jerry Lee name myself. That could be because I'm a big Jerry Lee "The Killer" Lewis fan though.

"It is her turn."

LEEH

You know, I can totally understand why an actor would want people to withhold judgment on a project they haven't seen, rather than making assumptions about its quality in advance. On the other hand, I suspect that negative advance responses to "I, Robot" are due in part to the previews, which pump up the "Will-Smith-Kicks-Ass-Against-Hordes-of-Cool-FX-Bad-Guys" element, and to the experiences of many SF fans, whose beloved SF classics have been tortured by Hollywood in order to become blockbusters.

I haven't seen "I, Robot," of course, and I haven't posted on the subject before now. I will probably go, in part for Alan, and in part because I am curious to see what they've done with Asimov's concepts. But I have to admit to being skeptical in advance. Asimov's stories are so NOT about cranked-up action, superstar actor heroes, and frantic FX, that it seems hard to imagine the movie could properly honor the Asimov universe and still be what it appears to be from the previews. And I'm personally tired to death of Hollywood taking classic literature, borrowing the title, and then deforming the original. My feeling is: if you want to tell your own story, tell it, but give it a new name. If you want to indicate that it was influenced by Asimov, or Hawthorne, or Shakespeare, or whomever, then give the source a credit. But to call such very loose adaptations by the name of the original text, whether it be "I, Robot" (presumably) or "The Scarlet Letter" or "Last of the Mohicans," is really only to try to make money off a familiar and respected name.

Anyway, if Alan it was, then I will try to honor his request that we keep an open mind. But I hope he understands that the negative comments he is hearing are the product of years of being burned by a Hollywood system that puts money before quality. Thank God Joss won't be doing that; and with luck, "I, Robot" will have escaped that as well. But I won't be holding my breath!

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle. . . ."
